Eagle’s View Let’s connect faith and life together
Dec 2018/Jan 2019 St. John’s Lutheran Church
Salisbury, NC
By Susan Shinn Turner In December, the St. John’s Men’s Chorus will be sharing its light with others. “Light of the World” is the theme of this year’s Men’s Chorus Christmas concert, set for 4 pm Sunday, Dec. 9, in the sanctuary. “It’s no secret thing that things feel a little dark in our community and in our world,” says Director Jason Harwood. “Jesus is the light of the world, and I’ve always loved Advent and Christmas when we do readings from the first chapter of John, as well as from Isaiah, ‘the people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.’ I knew there had to be a program we could build around this.” It’s a Christmas concert, Jason says, but it will include many
selections from the Advent season. “The whole theme of the light in the darkness was really meaningful to me. Even though we feel we are in a moment of despair, it is going to be OK. The light is going to come.” Jason explains that the Advent pieces will center around waiting for the light, and Jesus as the light of the world. “We are creating a sense of anticipation and hopefulness,” he says. “We’ll have some big numbers at the end that will explode and say yes! — we have arrived at Christmas.” As usual, the concert will include solos, duets, vocal ensembles, instrumentalists, and the St. John’s handbell ensemble. The choir is in a time of transition, says Randy Overcash, who

Pastor’s Letter
Dear Friends, First and foremost, we wish for you and your family a blessed a happy Christmas season. Each of us approaches the season in different ways, no doubt. However you approach it, our prayer is that you
will be filled with the song of the angels and the wonder of the shepherds. What a blessed time of year. THE FULTON STREET PROPERTY I’d like to give an update on the Fulton Street property purchased by the congregation in 2007. The property once held a Ketner grocery store, although more recently was home to the K Town Furniture store and the Bijoux Dress Shop. It was purchased to make room for an addition to St. John’s that would house contemporary worship, youth ministry, and space for community use. In 2011, the congregation unanimously decided against locating the new addition on the Fulton Street property, choosing instead to connect the new addition to our older facility. As you know, we dedicated this new addition as the Faith Center in 2015, the result of our G2G capital improvement campaign. What is to become of the Fulton Street property? To get at that answer, it’s important to remember why the property was purchased in the first place: to make room for new and renovated space at St. John’s. Although the Faith Center was not located on the Fulton Street property, Council decided to honor the original intent of the property’s purchase and leverage it as revenue towards the G2G plan.
To do so, Council appointed a committee, chaired by Raymond Coltrain, to explore options for the property’s development. After a two-year study – alongside the city and local development and real estate experts -- the committee recommended that the church pursue a long-term lease option to build upper level senior housing (apartments) and ground floor retail space. The recommendation would allow the congregation to maintain ownership of the land, meet the increasing need for senior adult living in downtown Salisbury, while receiving revenue from a long-term lease – revenue that would go towards phase 2 of our G2G plan (sanctuary renovation). Since we have not yet identified an interested developer, Council continues to deliberate as to when we will move forward. As you can imagine, it can be tricky to work through long-term plans on a significant piece of downtown property. Thankfully, we’ve been blessed with an amazing team of leaders who, since day 1, have made sure the best interests of the congregation and community are considered. We’ll continue to keep you abreast of further developments. Krista and I extend our very best to you this Christmas season. We hope to see you in worship! +Pastor Rhodes PS – You’ll be interested to know that planning for phase 2 of our G2G plan will begin in earnest at the beginning of the year. It should be an exciting year!

Youth Sponsor Angel Tree Project
It’s about that time of year when we begin our Angel Tree Project. Each year, St. John’s faith community sponsors families to experience the love of God and joy of Christmas through our Angel Tree Project, in partnership with the Salvation Army. We want you to partner with us in this endeavor! Here’s how it works and how you can get involved: Select an Angel and Buy a Gift -- We will have trees in the narthexes of our three worship spaces on Dec 2. You can pick out a tag with a child’s name and gift suggestions for that child from the tree. You can buy gifts and bring them back to the church by Dec. 9. Please provide UNWRAPPED gifts of NEW clothing, shoes, and toys. When you bring the gift back, please tape the tag on the outside of the gifts you bought for your angel. If you have questions, please contact Kai Thurow at [email protected] or 704-636-3431 ext. 204

By Susan Shinn Turner Feeling thankful? Then get on the Gratitude Train! In 1949, the people of France sent 49 railroad cars to the United States in appreciation for our country’s help during World War II. The cars were filled with French goods and handmade items. This February is the 70th anniversary of the arrival of the train car in Raleigh. That car is now housed at the N.C. Transportation Museum, which will be the hub for “49 Days of Gratitude,” which is set for Feb. 9-March 30, 2019. “We got the idea to go to the transportation museum and pitch the idea of gratitude events planned around the anniversary, and they loved it,” says organizer Sherry Mason Brown, a member of St. John’s who has teamed up with Kim Lentz in providing leadership. The Gratitude Train committee has been meeting since January. As part of the celebration, businesses will collect items for non-profits in Rowan County with their very own gratitude boxes. Each box costs $100, and the money raised will support the program. “We’re trying to replicate the idea of the Gratitude Train — giving something physical to our local non-profits,” Brown says. Each business gets to choose which non-profit it will support,
and participating non-profits will supply wish lists of items they need. Brown says she hopes many different non-profits will be included in the effort. The 49-day celebration begins with a parade an opening ceremony Feb. 9 at the transportation museum. As of press time, other events include: Feb. 15 — an art crawl featuring WWII veteran portrait by high school students, and an art show at Waterworks Visual Arts Center by homeschool students Feb. 16 — Night at the Museum with G.I. Joe — a partnership between Rowan Museum and the N.C. Museum of Dolls, Toys & Miniatures Feb. 20 — a lecture on African American involvement in World War II at Hood Theological Seminary Feb. 23 — World War II-based events at all three branches of Rowan Public Library Feb. 25 — Gratitude journaling at Rowan Public Library March 9 — Salute to Women in Service Meet Me In Paris gala for Center for Faith & the Arts at Lee Street Theatre March 16 — American Girl: Molly on the Home Front — N.C. Museum of Dolls, Toys & Miniatures March 22 — Merci Weekend — all things French

By Doug Robinson, Archives Committee member
Newspaper articles; photographs; awards; ticket stubs; playbills; church activities; kids’ accomplishments. All items found in a scrapbook. No doubt there’s an old scrapbook packed away in your home somewhere. These days, it seems they’ve migrated online to Pinterest. I had scrapbooks too and I continued collecting items (Jimmy Buffett ticket stubs and guitar picks!) for them through college then into the early days of my professional career and I gladly turned over the collection responsibility to my wife upon our marriage (she’s truly an expert!).
Like my cherished scrapbooks of memories, St. John’s has its own types of scrapbooks, as well. Consider the various activities of the church and the memories created by each. Over the years there have been a multitude of committees, with their own goals and accomplishments. There have been various service groups both local and global, as well as a number of discipleship groups. Simply put, St. John’s members have built a very, very LARGE scrapbook of artifacts since its founding in 1747.
A small but immensely dedicated Archives Committee have collected these member, committee and church memories for posterity. As you can imagine, it would take a tremendously large scrapbook to document the life of the church and it’s members, so the Committee began sorting items into folders in filing cabinets. One unique item within those cabinets may be your very own file folder in the Archives. Over the years, members of the church have collected articles from newspapers, magazines and professional publications about current and former members of the church and turned them
over to Archives for safekeeping. Committee members diligently created a file folder for each, filling at least two filing cabinets to date.
Concurrently, committee members identified large artifacts throughout the church that need to be preserved for future generations.
Recognizing the importance of these artifacts and memorabilia, current-day church leaders designated a smaller climate-controlled room in the new Faith Center to house the Archives Collection. It features an elaborate but highly functional rolling shelving system which allows for future growth. The room is in the church office hallway. Members are encouraged to stop by the Archives Room anytime during weekday business hours or on Sunday mornings. You may have seen our most recent project, identifying of members in the 250th Anniversary Congregation Photo, on display in the Fellowship Hall in recent weeks. Similar efforts are to follow.
Pat Epting, Barbara Rufty and Linda Safrit volunteered to move all the memorabilia from the sanctuary basement to the Faith Center Archives Room. These ladies worked twice a week for seven years to catalog the items, and are now ready for others to carry on this work.
Please consider joining the archives committee for the coming year. The committee presently meets the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month from 2 to 4 pm. We are in need of expertise from those who’ve grown up in the church who can readily identify members in photographs, newspaper articles, etc. Contact Linda Safrit, [email protected], to volunteer or for more information. Our scrapbook needs you to continue telling the story of St. John’s!

March 24 — Cinema CFA — “Sarah’s Key” March 30 — Closing ceremony — Piedmont Prime Time Community Band, and Voices of Veterans performed by drama students The marquee event will be Feb. 27-March 3, an exhibit on the Tuskegee Airmen at the transportation museum called “Rise Above.” This event is sponsored by F&M Bank. Also, on March 15, St. John’s will host the Phoenix Readers in
their presentation of “The Great War.” Other events are also in the works, Brown says. “The Gratitude Train is a wonderful story of the French people, and we want the entire community to participate in these events. Whoever you are, you’re thankful for something, and we want to show this in a positive way.”

And they will know we are Christians By our Love By our Love And they’ll know we are Christians by our Love By Gerrie Blackwelder While this verse is always our hope, many also hope to portray Christian principals in alternate ways. Thankfully, there are many ways to express love; by our countenance, our acts, our demeanor. Another way is to express ourselves through our dress. Though we may have differing ideas of the old fashioned “prim and proper,” we can focus on a simple method of portraying Christianity by wearing understated jewelry. Seasons Gift Shop is the perfect place to find fashionable pieces of jewelry that make perfect Christmas gifts. The pieces here, found at Season’s, are great examples of wearable Christianity that relate our love of God visually, just as stained glass has done throughout the centuries. Have a look and think of giving one to someone you love for

serves as vice president. Some longtime members have retired, and the choir lost Frank Goodnight in the spring, who was a key recruiter, Randy says. “It will take time to build things back up.” “We are redefining ourselves,” he adds. “The guys are continuing to get used to Jason. I thoroughly enjoy the rehearsals. We’ve had some good and productive rehearsals, and it’s going to lead to a very good concert.” Jason concurs. “We have fewer singers, but it is a good, solid sound,” he says. “This is going to be a good concert.” A freewill offering will benefit Meals on Wheels. “We are very grateful the Men’s Chorus has selected Meals on Wheels to benefit from the offering,” says Cindy Fink, executive director, who is also a St. John’s member. “We are promoting the concert, and we just hope for a big crowd that
afternoon.” The Men’s Chorus will reconvene for the spring session with a welcome back party at 6:30 pm on Friday, Jan. 11, at the Hidden Creek Clubhouse. Its first rehearsal for the spring session is 4 pm Jan. 13. And the spring concert is set for 4 pm Sunday, May 5, in the sanctuary. “The guys wanted to do a Cinco de Mayo theme,” Jason admits, “and I told them, ‘That is not gonna work.’ “But you never know.” President Dennis Rogers invites all interested men ages high school and up to join the Men’s Chorus. “We are certainly eager to have other men join us — from St. John’s, and from the community,” he says. “This is not just a St. John’s group. This is a community chorus.”

By Paula Bohland This is Anita. She lives in a family that really struggles to survive. In fact, last week while I was in Guatemala I saw her mom in the city dump foraging for items to resell and food to feed her children. Thankfully, Anita is sponsored by a wonderful family at St. John’s and she is able to attend Escuela Integrada. Because of this sponsorship Anita and the other kids who attend the school have completed another year of education. Along with an education, Anita and the other school children also receive 2 nutritious meals per day, tutoring, and family support to assist them in overcoming severe poverty. Without the school Anita and many of the other children attending Escuela Integrada would experience mal nutrition, and would never have the opportunity to be educated. The school year ended in early November but Anita and the other children will return in January of 2019, ready to learn
and grow. Escuela Integrada and GRACES are St John’s mission partners. Every year, St John’s participates in the annual GRACE’S sponsorship challenge. During this time, our church comes together to sponsor the children who would otherwise have no support. This year St John’s Sponsorships will focus on developing resources to feed the children. Since learning is very difficult when hunger is present, Escuela Integrada provides 2 meals per day and snacks for every child. The meals are nutritionally based and offer more fruits and vegetables for the children. Since Escuela Integrada is located in the urban area of Antigua, fruits and vegetables are much more expensive and we are in need of funds to ensure the children are offered nutritionally sound meals. This year we will kick off St John’s participation in the GRACE’s Sponsorship Challenge on Dec. 2. On that date, we plan to host a “Fiesta Guatemala” after the 11 am service. During the fiesta we will serve snacks, provide information on the state of the school, give updates on individual children sponsored by members of St John’s and offer a Guatemalan Market featuring unique Christmas gifts. Please mark your calendars for Dec. 2. Join us in this opportunity to celebrate the school and ensure that no child attending Escuela Integrada has to go hungry in 2019. For more information or for donations please contact Paula Bohland at 704.640.6144. GRACES is now also a recognized Thrivent charity for your giving convenience.

Once again in December, St. John’s will host the live simulcast between Christmas Lutheran Church in Bethlehem and the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. St. John’s welcomes all in the community to join in this annual worship service at 9:30 am Saturday, Dec. 15, in the Faith Center. Prayers, readings and hymns, in both Arabic and English, will alternate between Washington and Bethlehem, bringing those of different lands, languages and ethnic backgrounds together in celebration of the birth of Jesus. This will be St. John’s fifth year to host the event. A panel discussion will follow the service. Holly Zemke is a member of the Palestine Ministry Team, having helped hang the Palestine photo exhibit in March. Holly, who joined St. John’s in June 2017, works part-time at Waterworks Visual Arts Center as its communication and development coordinator. This will be her first simulcast service. “I’m really looking forward to this,” she says. “Everything seems to be contentious and divisive right now, but there are many people we can unite with in our beliefs. To know that we’re one place around the country hosting this service in which so many Christians will celebrate Jesus’ birth is very hopeful to me.” In her research about the locales, Holly found some interesting connections. Christmas Lutheran Church in Bethlehem is the oldest Lutheran church in Palestine, started in 1854 by German missionaries. The church itself was
built from 1886-1893. Bethlehem has the honor of being the city in which Christians remember and celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Envisioned in 1791 as “a great church for national purposes,” and chartered in 1893, the foundation stone of the National Cathedral in Washington, DC was not laid until 1907. That stone came from a field near Bethlehem, and was set into a larger piece of American granite. “Isn’t that cool?” Holly asks. “It’s a great metaphor for unity.” Holly was also intrigued by the connection between Christmas Lutheran founders and St. John’s founders. She learned that German immigrants founded St. John’s Lutheran Church in Salisbury in 1747. Meeting for years in parishioners’ homes, their first worship structure was occupied in 1768, with two subsequent Salisbury buildings used before the current sanctuary was completed in January 1927. “St. John’s is older than both of these places,” Holly notes. “No matter where we are, we are all children of God, and through this service, we get to celebrate that in a very unique way.” So gather your family and invite your friends to attend what promises to be a most meaningful joining of Christians around the world, just in time for Christmas.

Around the Church
Be a part of a beautiful tradition at St. John’s as we decorate our worship spaces for the Advent and Christmas seasons. Purchasing a poinsettia, hanging a wreath or lighting a candle is a way to remember and honor those you love, appreciate, or admire—perhaps a family member, teacher, church leader, friend or neighbor. For centuries, lighting candles has been a symbol of hope and remembrance. This year we are offering the opportunity to light a candle in honor or memory of a loved one or friend. Donations may also be made to the general decorating fund in honor or memory of someone. Money for Poinsettias, Wreaths and Candles may be mailed to
or taken to the church office. Deadline for ordering will be Friday, Dec. 14. Donations will be acknowledged in the Christmas Eve Service bulletin.

Dear St. Johns Family,
I want to thank everyone for their concern and their prayers for Gattis during his long illness and recent death. Thanks to Wade Rouzer for bringing us communion just 12 days before Gattis died. I appreciated the calls, cards, food and visits from so many fellow members. It is a great Blessing to be members of such a compassionate congregation . I also want to thank everyone that helped with the visitation, the funeral service and the meal afterwards. Each of you was greatly appreciated.
Also a special thanks to all for sharing their gifts of compassion and music during the funeral service. Many people have told me that all the music was exceptionally wonderful. It was very uplifting for our extended family to listen to our wonderful organ and organist. God Bless you all.

By Barbara Jo Corriher
On Friday, Oct. 26, St. John’s Rainbow Makers made a rainy day a very happy, sunny day inside our Child Development Center. The Rainbow Makers, teachers and children had a delightful morning laughing, painting, tossing, playing and more.
At the Go Fish station, Gary Taylor attached the package of Gold Fish crackers while Larry Britt helped each child with the fishing pole. Sally Taylor and Jane Britt painted each little face with a pumpkin or a ghost at the face painting station. Amy Ritchie shared a ring toss game that was educational, active and fun. Judy Childress shared stories and even came dressed to impress with her blue, curly wig atop of her head. Lorna Reasor and Barbara Corriher guided the children through the Glow-n-the-Dark painting station. Everyone had the best time and now we hope you will enjoy these pictures. Anytime you wish to experience the happiness of St John’s CDC visit their Facebook page, @stjohnscdc, where the staff constantly shares the good things that are always happening at our CDC.
Please remember to participate in St. John’s CDC toy drive! Contributing to the toy drive
is a wonderful way to honor or remember someone during the holiday season. The teachers have each chosen toys for their classrooms and you will find those listed on Amazon’s website.
Go to Amazon’s website.
Go to Find a List or Registry.
Search St. John’s CDC under baby registry.
Proceed to shop and purchase, selecting to have the items delivered directly to the CDC.
Consider asking others to help you buy a more expensive ticket item.
Making a monetary contribution is another wonderful way to support our toy drive. You may make the check out to St. John’s Lutheran Church or you may make it out to St. John’s CDC. Please make sure you write in the check’s memo line: CDC toy drive.
Thank you for supporting our first annual
CDC Toy Drive. What fun those children
are going to have playing with their new
toys!
