Eagle Lake Fly Fishing Secrets By Jay Fair, June 2014 

Here I am 90 years old and my beloved Eagle Lake is once again open.  How blessed can one 

be to have fished and guided it for 35 years.  Everyday old friends call to ask how I’m doing. I 

laugh and say, “doing great I woke up this morning!” 

My son Glenn takes care of our business now and we now live together 24 hours, 365 days a 

year. 

I have fished most of the lakes in Plumas, Lassen and Modoc counties, so people call me 

under no obligation and we fish awhile.  

Most of the talk now is, “say, how is Eagle Lake going to be this year?”  I believe of all the lakes, Eagle will be the best.  

You may miss fishing the tulles and your old favorite spots.  But remember, with the lake having much lower waters and 

the same amount of fish (I assume the figures I get are correct, the fish are going to concentrate, probably from Pelican 

Point south. 

On a normal opening day at daylight or when the wind is blowing, I fish very shallow water, two to ten feet, around 

rocky points where the shrimp, dragon fly larva and leeches are and the bigger fish stay.  Look for jumping Tui Chubs.  

Troll 1.5 miles per hour at least 120 feet behind the boat.  Follow the shore line, never in a straight line ‐ always in a zig‐

zag pattern.  Put one or two split‐shot 18 inches above the fly.  When you snag on a rock, high carbon hooks get dull, re‐

sharpen.  If you have the Jay Fair Special Trolling Lines you don’t need the split‐shot. 

For 35 years I’ve never used anything for trolling but my trolling flies.  The best colors are chartreuse, olive leech, hot 

orange, cinnamon leech and tui chub.  For 25 feet or deeper, All Around Best, when trolling with down riggers real deep, 

use our Black Leech. 

Eagle Lake is a fly fishing paradise, all of our flies are designed for still water with eight wraps of lead.  I wade from shore 

with a floating line and 12 feet of leader, 3x tippet. 

The best colors are buggy olive, rust, bright orange in early and late season. Kick Boat and Cast in bright orange is deadly 

as are the rust and olive. 

Do not let the wind blow you off the lake.  Fish right on shore very slow with a jerky retrieval. When walking the shore, 

look for snail shells, there will be a bed nearby. 

In the heat of the day when the water is glassy, thousands of insects will come off.  Fish a Jay Fair Copper Nymph or 

Buggy Olive Wiggle Tail under a small indicator 3 to 7 feet deep.
