July 8, 2017 Meeting MinutesMeeting Called to Order by President for Life, Joe Waltz. The obsequious membership was led in

the Pledge of Allegiance by Sam Ward.Fake News: EAA National has appointed a Special Counsel to investigate collusion in the election of

Waltz. Putin reportedly prevented non-ATP pilots from voting.Visitors: --Miles Demster introduced his wife Ann and two daughters.New Members: --Steven Havemann, partner with Logan Dent on an RV-14 project.Membership Report: Bob Humes reports 131 paid members.

This Day in Aviation History: Waltz again changed things up, delivering a loquacious report of his HEAD OF STATE visit to the UK. Joe noted the user fees the English government imposes on GA pilots for routine activities such as Takeoffs and Landings. This is a similar system to what the ALPA and NATCA unions want to impose on U.S. general aviation pilots. His Excellency deigned to visit Ron Mitcham at White Waltham Airfield outside of London. The flying club there impressed Joe, having its own full service bar for pilot members! Ron is planning to fly his RV-7 across the Atlantic Ocean to visit us in Conroe and to attend Airventure. Joe explained the route and difficulties. (Editor’s Note: Ron did make it from the UK to Conroe safely, and with lots of help from Joe, he made it to Airventure.) A very interesting presentation demonstrating just how far experimental aviation has come, and how supportive EAA members are to other aviators.

June Meeting Notes: Approved with motions from Donahoe and Haskell, Waltz complaining.Treasurer’s Report: Guice posts the following: Beginning balance on 6/01/17 $6513, income $180,

expenses $1489, resulting in a balance of $5255. Events Chairman Report: After meeting Fly-out to the Picket House in Woodville.

IMC/VMC Club: Fankhauser announces July meeting agenda. Young Eagles: No reportShop Tip: Come back next month for Kreiner’s tip. We may add other member presentations to this

topic, and are planning after-meeting hangar tours to demonstrate building techniques.Homebuilder Hints Video: Installing cotter pins on castle nuts.

New Business:--Oshkosh Airventure list being finalized. (Editor’s Note: 51 members attending).--Brent Crabe planning a Chapter Dinner at OSH. (Editor’s Note: 43 attended dinner).Old Business: Chapter T-Shirts and Polo Shirts being delivered by Vickie Croston.Project Reports: (Email Miles Demster large file pictures of your project before each meeting.)-- Doug Malloy (Zenith 750) A/P servos, under seat wiring, tunnel construction, looking for hangar.-- Logan Dent (RV-14A) Fitting rudder pedals, mock-up of panel with AFS EFIS, ordered finish kit.-- Dave McDonald (RV-10) Fiberglass cabin lid and doors in place, cowling, firewall forward work.-- Mark Haskell (Zenith 601HD) Working on firewall and the aft fuselage skins.

Program: Chapters video included Jack Pelton (EAA CEO) imploring members to oppose union efforts to give airlines complete control of ATC services and airport improvement funds. A segment on the new Blue Barn at OSH dedicated to Chapter activities. Also, an amazing four engine, single seat, 1/3 scale B-17 built by Jack Bally in 18 years.

Announcements: EAA to donate 10 TIG welders to Chapters. We all need to request that Chapter 302 be the recipient of one of these at EAA.org\chapter resources. (Editor note: Success!)

$10 Drawings: Someone won for wearing a Name Tag, Mark Haskell won for his picture on the website!

Adjourned to fly to Woodville or drive to McKenzie’s for lunch.

JULY 8TH WOODVILLE FLY-OUTIn our continuing series of after meeting fly-outs, the July 8th was another success. As you can see at the left, the July weather cooperated to some extent, even though it was as hot as advertised. Forest fires in the area made the visibilty less than optimal. While the forecast was VFR, the smoke made finding the runway more sporting. In the heat, everyone took advantage of the shuttles to and from the restaurant.

While we have done this destination before, the Pickett House is a favorite fly-out stop. We had 18 EAA 302 members at the ramp. A couple even drove up in a car from Conroe. Comfortably seated in our own private room, we enjoyed fried chicken, dumplings, cornbread, biscuits, mashed taters, greens, vegetables, peach cobbler & drinks. Make sure you don't miss the next one.

THE “NEW” 302 TIG WELDERTop left, you can see 302 member Bob Humes—just back from his drive from Oshkosh to Conroe. Bob transported the raffled TIG welder that was awarded to the Chapter. 10 of these machines were being used in the Georgia Sportair Workshops TIG classes. When the decision was made to move all TIG classes to OSH, Lincoln Welding stepped up and said they would donate all new equipment for the new venue. This is a very generous donation. The machine is in good condition. It includes gauges, foot control, 4 different sizes of electrodes (new) with the torch. We will need an Argon bottle and some minor support tools. Next—settle where to put it, and get some classes scheduled to learn how to use it. Then, dig out your kit plans and let's have some fun!

A Spirit of Saint Louis replica was there, complete with a period dressed re-enactor leaving for Paris within the hour.

The “Biggest Airshow in the World” just wrapped up Sunday, July 30th in Oshkosh. EAA 302 had a record number of members—over 50—attend, generating hundreds of stories to retell. Make sure to attend the August 12th meeting to share yours. Several members drove all the way with campers. Others flew airlines and rented cars out of Milwaukee, Chicago O'Hare or Midway. Some flew their own planes and either camped, dormed, B&B'd or motelled. But all met on the grounds of Wittman Field for the fun. The weather was cool and the grounds in good shape from recent rains. Once there, they had to choose from a blizzard of classes, seminars, workshops and displays. The four main hangars were packed with vendors hawking the latest advances in aviation goodies. And then there were the airshows, Blue Angels, and Astronauts in person! If you haven't attended one, YOU GOTTA GO!

Angelina County Airport Cafe

Nicely kept airport with a cafe right next to the fuel pumps. Not the cheapest fuel in the area, but a super-friendly staff makes up for that. The ladies in the restaurant offer good, reasonably priced food. They make a great burger, but their pies and cobbler (if its not gone) are excellent. And don't forget—they're also open for breakfast.

See you there!

Dennis McCright, 69, was a retired Continental Airlines pilot like many of the Freedom Flight RV formation demonstration team pilots he flew with. He died August 13, 2011 during a routine formation practice with this group while flying the beautiful RV-6 he had built with his friend Dick Stevens. Due to a midair collision with an RV-8, he did not return to us.

Dennis became enamored with aviation at the young age of 14, and never lost his enthusiasm for flight. He had a long and successful career as an airline pilot, safely flying many millions of miles. After retirement, you could find him at the airport most days, helping friends work on their airplanes or building another one of his own. Dennis was always willing to drop what he was doing to help both friends and strangers.

Dennis was President of EAA Chapter 302 at the time of his death. His charisma and enthusiasm revitalized the members of his chapter. Dennis was just the sort of person everyone enjoyed being around. He is survived by his wife Lori, daughter Melissa, son Justin, and his grandchildren. He is also survived by many hundreds of friends who miss him greatly.

WHO'S WHO AT 302Here's a lad that you have hopefully had time to meet. Chris Jansen used to play on Microsoft's Flight Simulator X and decided to take a Discovery Flight in a Cessna 152 out of Hooks Airport. He was 13 at the time, but the “hook” was set!

His parents acquired a Cherokee 180—which he soloed in—and they based it at Conroe. When he obtained his Private Pilot license, his parents could also see he had decided on a career path in aviation. They traded the Cherokee for the beautiful Cessna 182 at left.

Chris joined EAA 302, discovered Young Eagles, and as a high school student, he began participating in the YE Rallies. In his words: “That will always be some of the most memorable flying I have done. There is no better feeling, in my opinion, than seeing a kid take the controls of an airplane, and having them taste flight for the first time. I'll never forget that experience, and I hope to continue flying Young Eagles for as long as I can keep my medical.”

He has departed now for college and is currently at Kansas State University. He has his Commercial Certificate, Instrument Rating, and will add Multi-Engine this fall. CFI and II will naturally follow. Upon graduation, his plan is to move on to Wichita, KS to do instruction for Textron Aviation.

If you enjoy watching a person's success, here is one to follow. Good luck, Chris!

Katelyn Ebdon made it to Oshkosh without any problem for the Advanced Airventure Camp and as of this writing she is enjoying a week in Oshkosh courtesy of the members of EAA 302. I hope to have a written report of her experience at the camp by next months meeting.

I attended the Young Eagle dinner held on Wednesday at Airventure (wearing my newly acquired EAA302 shirt thanks to Vicky). Attendance was excellent and I made a lot of contacts from other Young Eagle coordinators across the country with a lot of suggestions for improving our future events. See the picture below.

On that note a few members have asked about future Young Eagle events. The general consensus is that we wait for the temps to drop a bit before we schedule a date.

You saw her in the March issue of the EAA 302 Newsletter. In the center is Katelyn Ebdon, our choice for the Airventure Camp Scholarship which we award yearly. Below are some comments from our Young Eagle coordi-nator, Chris Dowell:

We now meet in Galaxy FBO's newly finished building on the South Side of Lonestar Regional. Use the south entrance, 1st floor. Meetings start at 10:00AM.

You cannot access the FBO by the old Airport Parkway. You need to use Loop 336 and turn at Hawthorne Drive. This is a new road with a new Airport Entrance sign which mentions Galaxy FBO and the Black Walnut Restaurant. This is just southeast of the Roller Skating Rink.

See you there.
