FIFA 10There’s something in the air, and it’s not justthe H1N1 virus. Nope, it’s the unmistakeablewhiff of excitement that signals the start of theseason and the imminence of a new FIFAgame. Below are some hard facts on FIFA 10.After that, we hand you over to some industryexperts for some less than concrete predictionsfor the season ahead…

If football is a matter of form and confidence, then FIFA 10 will be an amazing game.

The franchise, and its parent label, EA SPORTS, ison a hell of a winning streak, with critical acclaim, sales and even some nice shiny awards all beingbagged in the build-up to the release of FIFA 10.

As ever, the improvements have come thickand fast, and the details will be covered in theSeptember 11th issue of MCV. But here are a fewheadlines to be getting on with…

FIFA 10 features the first ever true 360ºdribbling system. Dribbling is perhaps football’sclassic art, possibly one of its lost arts. FIFA10allows players to be more skilful than ever andfind gaps that were previously not possible.

Meanwhile, on the training ground, teams canwork on customisable set pieces, designing andrecording free kicks and corners to unleash in games.

Loads of other innovations have beeninfluenced by an unprecedented level of feedbackfrom consumers that helped to shape the FIFA devteam’s wish list and, ultimately, helped to createthe best FIFA ever.

Whether or not the season ahead turns out tobe the best ever rather depends on which teamyou follow. Over the next 20 pages we map outthe fixtures facing all the Premiership clubs, andask some of their supporters in the industry topredict what will happen between now and May.

Enjoy the season, enjoy FIFA 10 and marvel atthe never-ending optimism of football fans.

OK, so I stuck my neck out bysaying first, but after yet anotherseason of being the annual underachievers this has to be the year. The good news is that Rossicky isactually fit again and we’ll have

full seasons out of Eduardo and Arshavin, sothat’s almost like signing three new players. Awhole season of Arshavin playing will be key tosuccess as he hasn’t yet caught the Arsenaldisease of trying to score from within two feet ofthe goal line. Instead he prefers the shoot onsight approach, which still catches many goalkeepers by surprise - just ask Pepe Reina.

Finishing above our local rivals isimportant and a decent run inEurope would be nice. It wouldbe great to see Wolves stay upthis time. Last year we did notconvert enough home games

into wins, that needs to change this year. Wealso need a few more young English players tocomplete our collection! It would be nice if wehad some Saturday 3pm kick offs – am I the onlyperson who misses this?

Expectations are not too high. Wewill need to get off to a goodstart to have any chance ofstaying up and aside from anopening day trip to Old Trafford, there are points to be had in the

early fixtures. Some of the new signings are a bitof an unknown quantity with up-and-comingChampionship players and a couple of Ecuadoriansalongside older heads like Bowyer and Ferguson. They will all need to gel very quickly. If we getrelegated but do the double over the Villa it willbe regarded by many as a good season!

With nothing but a first fullseason of anti-football to lookforward to, the prospects for thisseason look fairly grim. The lossof Santa Cruz and home-grownMatt Derbyshire leaves us short

up front (please don't play Samba there againSam!), and with club legend Tugay departedwe look devoid of creativity. Add a series of no-name signings apart from the prehistoric Vierion trial, it looks set to be a long, long-ballseason indeed, with a minimum of excitement. Two wins against Burnley though and all willbe forgiven!

remains the smallest in the Premiership. ExpectGary Cahill to continue to be involved in theEngland set-up, Super Kevin Davies to tormentdefences up and down the land, and JussiJaaskelainen to continue to prove why he is thebest keeper in the Premier League. We are theone and only Wanderers!

For the last few weeks all thetalk has been about our star manJohn Terry. But thankfully it’sended with us keeping the bestdefender in the Premiership.Without him it would have been

tough winning the league, but now I’m prettyconfident and I reckon we’ll get to theChampions League final as well. Man Utd havelost a few key players and it will be interestingto see if Owen settles in. Liverpool are the onlyother title contenders, but this year Chelsea areshaping up for plenty of silverware!

Despite the poor start to lastseason we again proved that weare the closest challengers to the‘Top Four’. Hopefully, with a lastminute spending spree beforethe start of the season to bolster

the squad, and providing we can keep our keyplayers fit (Yakubu, Arteta, Jagielka, and Cahill toname a few), we will be able to close the gapbetween 4th and 5th. I just hope Moyes and thelads can do the business again this year andfinally bring some silverware back to Goodison.

Seventh last season was adream. I just hope that thedream continues and we don’twake to another nightmareseason of relegation scares.Hodgson is a clever, clever man

(as well as being a dead nice bloke) and as westand we have signed some decent squadplayers without letting any of the key playersgo, so we are in a good place. A few trips to farflung European destinations, a mid-table finish, some wins over the big four, a run in one of thecups and Hull relegated? Now that would makeme a happy man come May 2010.

I’m not confident. Last seasonwas a bit of a fluke, I think. Weneed new faces but we can’tseem to get any. Players justdon’t want to come. We offeredBobby Zamora £40K per week

when he’s worth about £4K, and even then thedeal fell through – well, it seems to have, anyway. Unless we get someone who can scoreus 15 goals a season, I think the writing’s on thewall. Phil Brown’s still the right man for the job.You can’t knock him, he’s just got very little towork with.

At the time of writing, Alonso`sfuture with the club was still notconfirmed. If we lose him, westep back, if we keep him there isno excuse for not moving forward. Then, maybe 90 points (86 last

season) could win us the league. Does seem like adream rather than reality, as it’s been so long. Onthe other hand, we are damn good and kicked assin nearly all big games last season. If we did winthe league, I really do think that we could be theclub to beat for a good few seasons. Would berude of me not to mention the new boy Glen;Rafa may have got a good one there. And ofcourse King Kenny’s back. My hero as a kid. Usedto call myself Kenny Gurdlish in the playground!

Unlikely world beater, or laughingstock? Whichever, we’re starting toresemble a chavvy Northern lotterywinner: upsettingly gaudy, but withan endearing ability to make thestuffy blue bloods jealous. Sure,

Mark Hughes hasn’t bought Burberry tiling orplatinum rims with his windfall, but his over-excitedgrabbing of endless strikers certainly showcases atroubling, ‘loadsa money’ disposition. He’ll have toland at least one international class centre back justto be in with a shout of keeping his job. The goodnews is we’ve already got too much firepower tomiss out on a UEFA Cup spot – so long as Eastlandsis big enough to house all of those YSL earrings andmoney-chomping Hummers.

challenging us for the title. Fergie is no mug andwill bring in fresh new talent. We are the mostsuccessful Premier League club, having won thetitle ten times, and this season it will be 11 –and we will be the most successful English clubonce and for all. It’s been a time of transition withPompey balancing the books andthe first team squad almostunrecognisable from the onewhich started the 08/09 season. If Pompey get in some new

faces, particularly Stephen Hunt, Amir Zaki andRoss McCormack, then they could be looking at adecent campaign, but the loss of Campbell,Davis, Crouch and Johnson is a big one. It looksas though a tough scrap against relegationbeckons, but the atmosphere at Fratton Parkshould mean a decent home record and willprobably be enough to see us stay up.

I was pleased with last seasonand we’ve all got a lot of faith inTony Pulis. We do need to sign afew more players, though. So farwe’ve got Dean Whitehead fromSunderland and that’s it. We’re

not exactly setting the transfer market alight. We need to strengthen the midfield, particularlyon the left. But I think we’ll be okay. A cup runwould be nice, but survival will do me.

I’m getting more confident asBruce’s signings come in. I’mlooking forward to seeing LorikCana from Marseilles, definitely. But I still think we need to addwidth. Kenwyne Jones is great in

the air, so we need players who can stick it onhis head. There’s no derby match this year (haha), so we just need to concentrate on avoidinga relegation scrap and having a good run in thecup. I’d be happy with that.

With Harry ‘We Had Three PointsFrom Eight Games When I TookOver’ Redknapp now in charge, what could possibly go wrong? Ihave tried to predict what we willdo for three years with no success

whatsoever. So this year I will not be bold; I will becompletely realistic. I think the league will be achallenge this year. But I comfortably predict wewill have it wrapped up by the end of April. TheLeague & FA Cups are a little bit different. But Ibelieve Harry will sign up ‘Er Indoors and Louise. He will then field them with the youngsters toblood them in and we will storm both cups. Easy. Iwould like to thank my son for these predictions. He is a bit biased.

Another season of gentleachievement as the 'Zola Project'beds in. A litany of injuriesmeant we finished last seasonlike a marathon runner in a suitof armour, but with Behrami,

Collison, Parker and Collins back and the additionof some flair with Jimenez we should have somereal momentum this year. We need some moreforwards, though, because Ashton’s bones aremade of china and while Carlton Cole is aworkhorse he’s far from the thoroughbred weneed. Following a season of mid-tablesecurity, a former hero returns asmanager with an impressive CV,and brimming with ideas, hepromises, of sexy attackingfootball. So you’d imagine the

coming season is something to look forward to.Not so. Since January, Wigan have shipped £36Mworth of talent and spent around £5M replacingit. Unless Roberto Martinez turns out to beGandalf in disguise, there’s no way we’ll repeatlast season’s 11th spot. So, once again, survivalis the goal, but I expect we’ll stay up, becauseBurnley, Portsmouth, Wolves, Birmingham, Stokeand Hull look like they’re going to be much, much worse.

I’m really looking forward to theseason and I think it’s going tobe a good one. It’ll be prettyopen at the top and the bottomand there’ll be plenty of shockresults. Last time we were up we

beat Man Utd 1-0, so the same again will benice. With the addition of Kevin Doyle we have astriker who has scored at the highest level andthis will allow Ebanks-Blake to bed in as it mighttake a few games for him to get used to thepace of the Premier League. I do think we’llsurvive, but if we don’t I’ll get over it and I’ll stillbe a proud Wolves fan.
