needs minimal additional resources interms of meeting the technicalrequirements of the course, Ong said.He disclosed the department is closelyworking with the Game DevelopersAssociation of the Philippines (GDAP)for this purpose. “We can even asksome of their members to teach here ifthey’re qualified.”

Why a course on game design anddevelopment?

Aside from the chance of being thefirst school to offer it as a full-blowndegree, Computer Applications Programcoordinator Norman Lee said DLS-CSBwould not want to ignore the fact that thegaming industry is growing tremendouslyand has overtaken the film industry interms of revenues.

This is manifested in the increasingnumber of game development work beingoutsourced to the Philippines by majorgame developers, Lee noted.

The only thing hindering theacceptance of gaming in the Philippines,Lee said, is the traditional mindset thatgaming is counterproductive and merelya waste of time.

But slowly, Ong said, the public isbeginning to accept the reality thatgaming has become an integral part of atechnology-dominated era.

In a related development, Ong also

revealed the change of the title of BS-Information Management program toBS-Information Systems in compliancewith CHED Memorandum Order No. 53.

The SMIT dean said the BS-IMprogram offered by DLS-CSB iscompliant with the CHEd order and thatonly a change in the program namewould be required to implement BS-IS forschool year 2008-2009.

AAfter chalking up first runner-up honors at theWNCAA, the women’s basketball team of De LaSalle-College of Saint Benilde stepped up their gameby topping the recently concluded Women’sBasketball League (WBL).

Completing the school’s domination of thetournament was the proclamation of Jessa MaeSarreal, a Bachelor of Science in BusinessAdministration major in Export Management (BSBA-EM) student, as the most valuable player (MVP).

T“The way to a man’sheart is through hisstomach.” A familiaradage often heard, but can very well beapplied to therecently concluded24th Southeast AsianGames, held lastDecember 1 to 16,2007, in Thailand.

Upon the invitation of PhilippineOlympic Committee (POC) PresidentJose Cojuangco and POC Secretary-General Mark Joseph, chef-delegatesfrom the De La Salle-College of SaintBenilde, particularly the School of Hotel,Restaurant and Institution Management(SHRIM), joined the Philippine delegationin Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, wherethe games were held.

Chef-Instructor Shirley Ann Josephand DLS-CSB 2007 graduates, MylesSanchez, Cardelon Hernandez, andPaolo Kierulf, the so-called “Philippine

Cooking Team” were tasked to prepareFilipino dishes in the humongous Thaikitchen inside the Athletes’ Village.

According to Chef Shirley, thechallenges the team faced were toprepare Filipino food with the availableThai ingredients. In addition to that, thelanguage barrier posed a minor problem.Luckily, a Thai chef spoke excellentEnglish having lived in Australia formany years.

He helped the Filipino chefs translatethe Thai ingredients to their Englishversions for the market list. The Thaichefs and their students, who all camefrom the Suan Dusit Rajahbat University, were in charge of the catering for theGames. They warmly welcomed our chefs

into the kitchen and were always on handto help and give a ready smile.

As such, the cooking activityproved to be a hit with our local and therest of the Asian athletes. The populardishes were sinigang, adobo, porktocino, pork inihaw, and the low-fatsinangag. The Benildean chefs evenbaked the very Pinoy pandesal. In fact, the dishes were such a hit that thePinoy athletes would even findthemselves competing with the otherAsian gamers for servings of the food.

The POC and the Pinoy athleteswere happy and satisfied to have been

Like partners coming together toperform a beautiful dance number, theDLS-CSB’s two dance groups – theBenildanze and Footworks Dance Theatre(FDT) – have now been merged and willbe known henceforth as the Saint BenildeRomançon Dance Company.

The newly formed dance troupe willbe under the direct supervision of theOffice of Culture and Arts (OCA).

FDT was founded in 1992 by a groupof Benildeans, spearheaded by ErwinFlores, who collaborated closely with theVisual and Performing Arts division of theOffice of the Student Affairs.

In the beginning, the group had totrain and do choreography by themselvesbecause of the lack of an official trainer. Itwas initially into jazz but later onexpanded to other dances such asmodern ballet, classical ballet, andcontemporary style.

TThe school’s two dance clubs synchronize their steps tocreate a merged entity whose task is to elevate thedance craft to a higher level.

When Leonor Orosa Goquingco, founder of CSB Filipinescas, died, thedance group momentarily disbanded andBenildanze was formed. Headed by CindyAmador, Benildanze was more into folk, modern, jazz, and hip-hop. The membersof the dance club were given scholarshipsand stipends and worked under thesupervision of the Office of the President.

Benildanze was later transferred tothe Office of Culture and Arts, with VictorUrsabia as trainor. Meanwhile, FDT wasrevived with the arrival of Christine Crame.

In June 2007, Benildanze becamepart of OCA and did not waste timeperforming recitals with the other OCAcompanies—Dulaang Filipino, Coro SanBenildo, and FDT, although the two dancegroups didn’t actually perform together.

On September 2007, the twogroups finally danced jointly, but still

using their original names. Theirnumber, which was meant tocommemorate the Feast of SaintBenilde, was choreographed by Ursabiaand Crame.

It was in November last year that thetwo groups finally performed under onename, when they did the choreography forthe play “Romeo and Juliet” under thedirection of Crame. This month, theirmerger was finalized and the name SaintBenilde Romançon Dance Company wasestablished.

With their union, the company nowwants to focus its efforts in making danceperformances, specifically classical balletand modern dance, accessible andmeaningful to the broader segments ofthe community by presentingperformances that reflect relevant localsocial issues and timely concerns.

TThe advent of the new year has ushered in renewed enthusiasm among Filipinos, especially those that believe that eight is a lucky number. But as our old folks loveto remind us, luck won’t come if we just sit around. So with 2008 just a few daysold, we ask the members of the Benildean community this question:

What are your

forexpectations

2008?

I’m expecting good economic growth for the country. Also, I’m hoping that there will not be as much political

noise as in previous years.— Mark Edward Casingal, student minister, LMO

I’m hoping that I’ll be able to pass all my subjects and for2008 to be a God-fulfilling year for me.— Rey Christopher Adalem, BSBA-CA student

For the Philippines, I’mhoping that graft andcorruption in thegovernment would belessened. As for me, I wishI can work abroad, mostespecially in the US.— Sidney A. Alano, security staff, LRCextension

I just want to be moreaware of what’s happeningaround me so that I canexpand my views.— Erika Ruiz, AB-CDAstudent

I’m expecting to gethigher grades this year. Ialso want corruption inthe government to bewiped out.— Fatima Balita,AB-CDA student

I’m hoping to passmy tougher majorsubjects. – LaraTitan, AB-CDA
