Evening Technical Talk of 2 hours for members on“Leak Testing: Basics and Advances” under Back toBasic Series was conducted at Hotel KohinoorExecutive, Apte Road, Pune. Talk was delivered by ShriChintamani Khade.Shri Chintamani Khade brought out the requirementand importance of leak testing. He has explained thebasic concepts of technology, methods for leak testingand the corresponding measurements.

on 3rd Feb 2018

Interaction meeting of NCB / NGC members from Puneand Pune Chapter EC with President ISNT, Shri R JPardikar was held on 3rd Feb 2018 for 3 hours at PuneChapter Office.

President ISNT was excited to know about the futureplans of Pune Chapter. Excellent ideas were put forthby the President ISNT for taking the expertise andexperiences of Pune Chapter members to the studentsfor broader reach of NDE science and Technology. Themeeting was very much fruitful considering manycreative ideas were discussed for the future endeavorsof Pune Chapter.

Delivering talk at Govt Polytechnic Pune on19th March 2018

Demonstration at Govt Polytechnic, Puneon 20th March 2018

Two days awareness programme on Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) was conducted at Metallurgical Departmentof Govt Polytechnic, Pune during 19th - 20th March 2018. About 50 students of 2nd year and 47 students of 3rdyear Metallurgical Department had attended the programme. The programme was co-ordinated and conductedby Shri B B Mate. The faculties were Shri B B Mate, Shri Sarang Matade, Mrs Vaijayanti Datar, Mrs Savita A Itkarkar,Shri Mandar Vinze.

The students and faculties had appreciated the awareness programme and requested ISNT Pune Chapter toconduct the programme on every year for the benefit of students.

Three days awareness programme was conducted onAdvance UT at Annasaheb Dange College ofEngineering and Technology (ADCET), Aashta, Sangli,Maharshtra during 23rd - 25th March 2018. Theprogramme was conducted by Shri Rahul Kulkarni,Shri Vivek Ligade and Shri Nilesh Vidhate.In the classroom training, the faculties had coveredvarious techniques of Ultrasonic NDE method andalso demonstrated various techniques for inspectionof different objects.

UT L-II course inauguration

UT Level-II course as per IS 13805 was conductedduring 19th - 26th April 2018. Exam was conductedon 27th & 28th April 2018. Shri Rahul Kulkarni wasthe Course Director for the course and otherfaculties were Shri Uday Kale, Shri ChintamaniKhade, Shri Randhir Kohale, Shri Rahul Kulkarni,Shri Nilesh G Mandhare, Mrs Sangita Kapote, ShriRajendra S Maitre, Shri Avinash, Shri D M Sonar,Shri S V Gophan. Shri Milind Darje was the examinerfor the course.The UT L-II course as per IS 13805 was conductedby ISNT Pune Chapter after a long gap of manyyears. The trainers were well appreciated by theparticipants.

ISNT Pune Chapter felicitated Shri AnandMahadev Vinze of Vinze Magnafield, Punefor his immense contributions to the field ofNDE. More than 60 members have attendedthe family gathering.

The event was only the second event in last4 years where the family members of ISNTmembers were involved. The event andspecifically the talk on fitness was wellappreciated by all. It was suggested that thisevent shall be arranged on yearly basis.

Gathering in the Techno-Social programme held on28th July at Hotel President, Pune

Techno-Social cum Felicitation programmewas conducted at Hotel President, Pune on28th July 2018. The evening programme wasorganised for the Family members of ISNTPune Chapter Members. ISNT Pune ChapterMembers, their Spouse and wards werefelicitated for their achievement in variousfields. On this occasion, Shri MahendraGokhale, CSCS, CSCC (Aus) a trained fitnesstrainer, trained IPL Mumbai team, has talkedto the family gatherings about “ExerciseMyth, Insight and Fitness Priorities”. PuneChapter also felicitated the members whohad immensely contributed for variousprogrammes of Pune Chapter since January2017.

AGM for the year 2018 was conducted on 27.09.2018. On this occasion, Chairman ISNT Pune Chapter haswelcomed all and given a brief about the Pune Chapter and overview of the activities carried out and

planned. Hon secretary has briefed about the activities carried out by Chapter in last 1 year and the plan forthe next year. Hon Treasurer has presented the audited balance sheet for last Financial Year.

The event was for the duration of 6 hours (10 am – 4 pm). Support was provided by Mr. A. L. Datar, MD ofFerrochem and Ferrochem Team & Mrs. Datar.

This was the first ever programme exclusively undertaken for the women student for making them awareabout the field of NDE.

Women Empowerment Committee inassociation with ISNT Pune Chapter hadconducted a one-day field trip for womenstudents from Cummins College ofEngineering for Women, Karvenagar, Puneto M/s Ferrochem NDT Systems Pvt.Ltd,manufactures of PT & MT Consumables,Equipment and Accessories situated at C-98, Jejuri MIDC Area. Mrs. Sangita Kapote,NGC Member had co-ordinated the event.The event was conducted on 12th October2018. Sixteen students along with two staffsfrom the college had participated in the fieldtrip.

*****************************************************************************************An evening technical talk on “Awareness onVarious Certification Schemes for Qualificationof Non- Destructive Testing Personnel” of 1 hourduration was conducted on 19th Oct 2018 at HotelAmbassador, Pune. The talk was delivered by ShriUday Kale from KUB Quality Services, Pune.

Shri Uday Kale has explained about variouscertification schemes and brought out thedifferences and similarities among differentschemes.

Another technical talk on “Transition from ConventionalNDT to Advanced NDT” of 1.5 hour duration wasdelivered by Shri Krishna Bhuta from Topax NDTSolutions, Mumbai. The talks were followed by livedemonstration of Phased Array UT systems and CRimages. Shri Paras Agarwal from Topax NDT Solutions,Mumbai had given the demonstration. Shri Krishna Bhutaand Mr Paras has explained about the specificadvantages the users can gain by utilizing the advancedtechnologies such as Phased Array Ultrasonics, Eddycurrent Array and Digital Radiography imaging.

Definitions and Terminologies used in Standards in qualification and Certification ofNDE Personnel by Chintamani Khade

NDE 2018 (Conference and Exhibition on Non-Destructive Evaluation)

The annual event of ISNT was conducted during 19th - 21st December 2018 at CIDCOConvention Center, Vasi, Navi Mumbai. The inaugural function of NDE 2018 was held on19th Dec 2018. Shri S A Bhadwaj, Chairman AERB was the Chief Guest and Shri ArvindModgil, President Reliability, COE, Reliance Industries Limited was the Guest of Honourfor the inaugural function. More than 70 exhibitors have participated in the exhibition. Shri DP Antapurkar, Director of Steam Boilers, Maharashtra has inaugurated the Exhibition. Morethan 240 talks were delivered by various speakers. Two memorial talks, eight Plenary talks,fifty invited talks were delivered by eminent personalities in the field of NDE from India andabroad. More than 180 contributory papers were presented by authors from variousinstitutions, industries and R&D establishments from India and abroad. Award committee ofISNT has announced various awards and the awards were given during the inaugural functionof NDE 2018.

iii. Recommended Practice: It provides guidelines (generally recognized internationally) for performing specificoperations or functions.(Like developing & implementing an in-house certification program for their personnel.)

iv. Certification System: The combination of the standard or recommended practice governing the certificationrequirements, the third-party certification program (if applicable) or the employer’s written practice, and additionalemployer documents used in the administration of their certification program.

v. Certification Program: The documented employer’s or certification body’s procedures and processes basedon a standard or recommended practice, which defines the requirements of that specific program.

vi. Authorized qualifying body -Body, independent of the employer, authorized by the certification body toprepare and administer qualification examinations.

vii. Certification body - Body that administers procedures for certification according to the requirements of aspecific standard. e.g. IS 13805, ISO 17024 etc.

viii. Examination centre - Centre approved by the certification body where qualification examinations will becarried out.

ix. Qualification examination - Examination, administered by the certification body or the authorized qualifyingbody, which assesses the general, specific and practical knowledge and the skill of the candidate.

x. Sector - Particular section of industry or technology where specialized NDT practices are used, requiringspecific product related knowledge, skill, equipment or training. It can be a product sector like welds tubescastings etc. or industrial sector like aerospace in service inspection.

i. Codes: One of the top-tier documents, providing a set of rules to specify the minimumrequirements (like material, design, fabrication, inspection examination and testing etc.)for manufactured or constructed components. These may incorporate regulatoryrequirements and will often refer out to standards or specifications for specific detailson additional requirements not specified in the Code itself.

ii. Standards: Documents developed by professional bodies to establish engineering ortechnical requirements for products, practices, methods or operations

NDE 2018 (Conference and Exhibition on Non-Destructive Evaluation)

There were many FIRST have been initiated in this edition of NDE and are as follows

i. A Memorial talk in the memory of Dr Baldev Rajii. Industry interaction session / industry meet was conducted which was attended by policy makers

from various industriesiii. Special session on accreditation of NDT Laboratoriesiv. Special session on Career Opportunities for studentv. Dedicated industry sessions were conducted on various topics such as NDE in Oil & Gas,

Metals and processing, manufacturing industry, transport industry, Power Industry and Thirdparty Inspection services.

vi. Short Presentation in place of e-poster presentation for giving opportunities to students topresent from the stage.Best paper award was given to six presenters, 3 each from full presentation and short

presentation category. More than 1000 participants had attended the conference. NDE 2018 wasconcluded on 21st Dec 2018 with award ceremony and valedictory function. NDE-2018 was a greatsuccess and set a new benchmark in many aspects.

We are happy to present a second issue of ISNT Pune Chapter’s journal called“e-PuNDEet”.The first e-bulletin was unveiled by Dr. R. J. Pardikar, President ISNT duringNational Governing Council (NGC) held in Kolkata on 30th September 2018.Our goal is to create a new forum for exchange of information on all aspects of NDE.Future scope of the “e-PuNDEet” is open to your suggestions. I would like to encour-age you to submit original research notes as well as opinions, technical reports andshort communications in the general area of NDE. The journal is sponsored by “Absolut Coats” and we are going to keep you informed on oncoming eventsorganized by the ISNT Pune Chapter, give you inside stories on the developmentstrategies and directions. I wish to see “e-PuNDEet” develop into a NDE journal withthe balance changing toward research communication rather than remain a bulletin.The success of this “e-PuNDEet”. depends on your response.I would appreciate your feedback.

Pune chapter is one of the very active chapter of ISNT and all is only because of yourunconditional support given through the year 2018.As usual the case, this time also members from Pune chapter were very actively involved in theactivities conducted beyond the geographical  boundaries of Pune Chapter. Members were veryactively involved in finalization of upcoming certification schemes “ICN”, Conference and ExhibitionNDE-2018, Workshop on Advances and Applications of Digital Radiography Technologies (AADRT).Many members from Pune chapter are part of various standing committees formed by NGC.
