The role of data analytics in the future of business and the impact it
could have on the Internal Audit profession.
Background:
Currently in the US many Internal Audit groups use data analytics for
every single audit. It has proven to expedite analysis before, during, and
after audits. However IT and Operations are also discovering the power
of big data and want to leverage this insight. The evolution of newer and
more user friendly systems has made it much easier for all internal audit,
IT and operations to leverage this technology.
Richard Arthurs, (Partner, National Leader - Governance and Risk
Management, MNP), will speak on how data analytics evolved in the
General Mills Global Internal Audit function over the last fifteen years.
He will share some data analytic success stories from within various
Canadian industries, and some projections of what the Internal Audit
profession must consider to avoid being at risk of being disrupted by
technology.
Speaker: Richard Arthurs
Richard has over 25 years of global business experience focused on
finance, risk management, internal audit, IT governance and data
analytics. Prior to his current role he was the VP of Risk, Audit and
Compliance at AltaLink, Berkshire Hathaway Energy. Also, he was the
Global Director of Internal Audit and Risk Management for General Mills
Inc. in Minneapolis. Over his 13 years at General Mills he also served as
the CFO of General Mills UK and Ireland in London, England, and he
was a US National Brand Controller. Richard is the Sr. Vice Chair of the
National Board of Directors of the Canadian Institute of Internal Auditors.
He is also a facilitator of the ERM class in the Institute of Corporate
Directors - Directors Education Program (DEP).
Richard has helped write several thought leadership publications on
enterprise risk management, internal audit, IT governance, data
analytics and cyber security. Recently he helped write the document
"Twenty Questions Directors Should ask About Internal Audit" for CPA
Canada and the IIA.

Seminar - Performing an Effective Quality Assessment
April 18, 2017 8:30 a.m. – April 19 at 4:30 p.m.
Westin Edmonton, 10135 - 100 Street NW, Edmonton
As an organization grows and its internal processes change and evolve, its quality monitoring process
must keep pace. To ensure consistent quality in this dynamic environment, an ongoing commitment to
growth and improvement is essential.
The required elements of a Quality Assurance and Improvement Program (QAIP) include periodic internal
assessments and external assessments to demonstrate conformance with The IIA’s International
Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing. In addition, a quality QAIP can provide
evidence to the audit committee and management that the internal audit activity is efficient, effective, and
adding value. It can also build stakeholder confidence and document a commitment to quality, leading
practices, and the internal auditors’ mindset for professionalism.
This course is designed to help you learn how to perform an effective external assessment and/or periodic
internal assessment of an internal audit activity. If your primary interest is periodic internal assessment,
you can determine which external assessment option (full external assessment or self-assessment with
independent external validation) will work best for you and help you prepare for an external assessment. If
your primary interest is external assessment, you can use this course to satisfy part of the requirements for
external assessor qualifications. (“Successful completion of The IIA’s quality assessment training course,”
PA 1312, no. 7.)
Guided by Archie Thomas, an experienced senior auditor with extensive experience in quality assessment
activities, participants will:
• Examine the process flow and tools in the new IIA Quality Assessment (QA) Manual and discuss
how it can be used to conform with the Standards, while identifying opportunities for improvement.
• Practice using the QA Manual tools to plan, perform, and evaluate the results of an external quality
assessment case study.
• Design an efficient and effective periodic internal assessment program for their internal audit
activity.
• Evaluate the external quality assessment options and determine which option will work best for
their internal audit activity.
It is recommended that participants take Building a Sustainable Quality Program or have equivalent
experience as a prerequisite to this course, as well as an understanding of the International Professional
Practices Framework (IPPF).

Chapter Achievement Program
For the 2015/2016 Chapter Year the Edmonton Chapter achieved Sapphire status in the IIA’s Chapter
Achievement Program (CAP).
To qualify for recognition in the IIA’s CAP program, Chapters must earn specific minimum Chapter
Achievement points in the categories of:

Service to the Profession
Chapter Administration
Once the chapter has met or exceeded the minimum CAP Requirements in the three categories
(above), the chapter will have reached the BRONZE performance level. A chapter can advance to
SILVER or GOLD levels by accumulating specified point levels defined by the IIA across the categories
above. PLATINUM is a level recognizing chapters that attain GOLD status for 10 of 11 consecutive
years. A chapter will continue to be recognized as platinum level each year thereafter as long as it
reaches the Gold CAP level every year. There are three special levels above Platinum: Ruby
