Step 1: Go to www.tin-nsdl.com and select the respective Challan. For payment of Income Tax, select Challan No. 280.

Step 2: After selecting the correct Challan, provide the below discussed correct details including correct code of payment. For example, if an individual wants to pay his tax at the time of filing of his return, he must select 0021 [Income Tax (other than companies)] and Code 300 (for payment of self assessment tax). Also, select your bank from the dropdown from which you wish to make the payment and be a little careful while selecting A.Y. After this, write the characters given on the screen in the box to proceed.

Step 3: On clicking the proceed button, a new page will be displayed containing the details provided by you in the Challan and the name of the taxpayer as per the data base of Income Tax Department will be displayed. The name will be displayed from the PAN/TAN database of the Department. In case of Form 26QB the name of the transferor and transferee will be displayed. If all the details are correct, click Submit.

Step 4: On submitting the Challan to the bank, the gateway of the bank will be displayed on the screen and you are supposed to login through your account and provide the details of tax, interest, cess, penalty, etc., to be paid. After verifying the same, submit the Challan to bank for effecting payment.

Step 5: On successful completion of the transaction, the challan of payment (i.e., receipt of payment) will be generated and will be displayed on the screen with the Challan Identification Number (CIN) and other details. You should preserve the hard copy as well as soft copy of this Challan for your records.
