Presidents Message by Betsy Ashton
1
Virginia Writers Club is
closing in on the 100th
anniversary where we
will be celebrating a
century of typos.
I invite everyone to think
about how to help with
the celebration. Can you
put something on your
website, share links on
Facebook, like and
retweet Tweets? Or,
maybe your chapter
would like to host an
event to celebrate how
long we've been around.
The Board of Governors
will help as much as we
2
can to identify programs
or speakers to enhance
your efforts.
While I'm on what
chapters are doing, I
wonder what some of the
chapters are doing. This
newsletter is thin. Way
too thin.
Hey chapters:
• Did you elect new
officers? If so, who
are they because the
president is invited to
join the board and
we need to update
the website.
• Have you elected two
chapter members to
represent the chapter
at the state level?
These representatives
3
are the voice of the
chapter at the Board
of Governors
meeting, and are also
listed on the website.
• Have you set up
writer’s workshops,
speakers programs or
write-ins for the
public for the first
quarter? For the
entire year?
• Do you need ideas,
speakers, members of
the board to visit?
• Are you still alive?
Remember, this is your
newsletter. Please share
it. Please contribute to it.
Please read it.
Here's to a terrific 2016,
Betsy

HANOVER WRITERS cont.
Our meetings always include lively
discussions and diverse
perspectives about reading, writing
and publishing. President Meaker
often provides a writing prompt
with a five-minute limit and we are
invariably amazed by the creative
responses! Those who come to the
meetings have included published
authors ranging in age from twelve
to seventy-plus as well as those
who are in the process of
publishing and those who simply
enjoy writing. All are welcome!

LAKE WRITERS
The Lake Writers are pleased to
share that one of their own, Susan
Coryell, became an Amazon best
seller when her book, "A Red, Red
Rose" reached #1 in two
categories in November: ghosts
and gothics. Congratulations Sue!
Find it on Amazon here.
On October 17th, Lake Writers
once again participated in the
Bridgewater Plaza Fall Festival in
Moneta, VA. Chuck Lumpkin,
2
Susan Coryell, Jim Morison, Sally
Roseveare and Betsy Ashton sold
their own books as well as the
Smith Mountain Arts Council's
anthology, "Voices from Smith
Mountain Lake." Sales were brisk
for the Lake Writers joint project,
"Nekked Came the Swimmer",
which purports to be the worst
book ever written.
On December 18th, four Lake
Writer Members–Betsy Ashton,
Kim Dalferes, Chuck Lumpkin,
and Linda Kay Simmons–
conducted a panel presentation
entitled "The Writer Beside You:
How SML Writers Are Publishing
Today" as part of the "Let’s Do
Lunch Series" at the Water’s Edge
Country Club, Penhook, VA.
On December 18th, Lake Writer
Kim Dalferes conducted a
workshop "What’s Creative About
Nonfiction?" at the Moneta/Smith
Mountain Lake Library, Moneta,
VA.
Betsy Ashton, Lake and Valley
Writers, is teaching a three-part
writers workshop at Southern
Roots, a gift shop at Smith
Mountain Lake. The workshop
3
focuses on applying techniques
from fiction to writing memoirs.
Ashton will present the workshop
again in the first quarter of 2016 if
demand continues.
The Lake Writers are publishing a
new anthology in 2016 entitled
"Reflections on Smith Mountain
Lake." The anthology
commemorates the 50th
anniversary of Smith Mountain
Lake.

NORTHERN VIRGINIA
WRITERS cont.
At our November 21st meeting,
Ethan Vaughn, a former literary
agent with Kimberley Cameron &
Associates, ran a query letter
workshop. The do’s and don’t of
querying were discussed in depth
and one attendee’s query letter was
dissected and recreated using
Ethan’s hook, bait, and switch
approach to crafting effective query
letters.
Members and their families
wrapped up an event-filled 2015
with our Annual Holiday Potluck
held on December 13th at the
Fairfax Station Railroad Museum.
We enjoyed more delicious food
than we could finish and having
2
time to simply chat with no set
agenda.
