CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Today marks the start of Black History Month. This is when we pay special tribute to the significant contributions that African Americans have made to our country. This is also the time when we remind ourselves that we still have more work to do.

In celebration of Black History Month, I invite you all to join us at City Hall for the proclamation presentation of Central San Diego Black Chamber of Commerce Day on Tuesday, February 7th in City Council Chambers during the 10:00 a.m. session.

Additionally, visit the Skyline Hills Branch Library on Wednesday, February 15th at 6:00 p.m. for the presentation of the special history of Allensworth State Park, the only California town founded, financed, and governed by African Americans.

NNNeeewwwsss YYYooouuu CCCaaannn UUUssseee Smoke Alarms Save Lives: The Burn Institute, a local non-profit organization is dedicated to fire and burn

prevention and burn survivor support services. The majority of fatal home fires occur at night, and the smell of smoke won’t always wake you up. Having a working smoke alarm in your home cuts your chances of dying in a house by 50% because it alerts you to the danger in time to escape. Use some of these smoke alarm tips:

Alarms should be installed in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement.

Test alarms at least every month by pushing the test button. Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or sooner if they do not respond properly. Make sure everyone in the home knows the sound of the smoke alarm and understands what to do when

they hear it. For more information, please call the Burn Institute at (858)541-2277 ext. 13.

Council President Cole, Mayor Faulconer, and City Clerk Maland proudly proclaimed January 31, 2017 to be Bonnie J. Stone Day for her contributions at the City Clerk’s office.

IT’S OPEN: The Grand Opening of the Legler Benbough Teen IDEA Lab was a success! After the opening, many attendees enjoyed the center which features a sound recording studio, two 3D printers, XBOX and Playstation consoles, more than 30 computers, Wacom tablets, a Wi-Fi hot spot lending program, and more. Feel free to stop by at the Valencia Park/Malcolm X Library on 5148 Market Street.

Getting It Done: Council President Cole shares her priorities toward addressing homelessness, affordable housing, public safety, and infrastructure at the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, Board of Directors meeting.
