Tides of Change:

The Evolution of the Rules of Golf

GOLF RULES

Golf; A game of 34 rules

but many variables

Although changes to the Rules of Golf are published every year the process of reviewing,

analyzing and considering these changes is completely continuous. The last published book of

the Rules of Golf came out in for the 2010-2011 seasons and was published separately by the

USGA and R&A. But, after spending the last four years exhaustively reviewing rules that have

caused issues in major championships the aforementioned governing bodies of golf have

collaborated on the first ever jointly designed, published and presented book on the Rules of

Golf. All in there have amendments to nine principal rules in order to provide improved

clarification and also to ensure that penalties are proportionate to the infraction. Significant

changes include:

Ball Moving After Address (Rule 18-2b)

A new exception is added which exonerates the player from penalty if their ball moves after it

has been addressed when it is known or virtually certain that they did not cause the ball to

move. For example, if it is a gust of wind that moves the ball after it has been addressed, there

is no penalty and the ball is played from its new position.

Ball in Hazard; Prohibited Actions (Rule 13-4)

Exception 2 to this Rule is amended to permit a player to smooth sand or soil in a hazard at

any time, including before playing from that hazard, provided it is for the sole purpose of

caring for the course and Rule 13-2 (improving lie, area of intended stance or swing or line of

play) is not breached.

GOLF RULES

To be continued…

Golf; A game of 34 rules

but many variables

Time of Starting (Rule 6-3a)

The rule is amended to provide that the penalty for starting late, but within five minutes of the

starting time, is reduced from disqualification to loss of the first hole in match play or two strokes

at the first hole in stroke play. Previously this penalty reduction could be introduced as a condition

of competition.

Does anyone remember last year’s open when Rory McIlroy was penalized when a gust of wind

blew his ball from its resting spot after he had soled his club? This rule allows for a more

equitable resolution for the player especially in competition.

The rules of the game are always evolving as the game presents new and challenging situations

much like a great leader in business. What makes golf so interesting and challenging is its myriad

of complexities. If you are knowledgeable about the rules of golf you will not only save a few

strokes off of your round but you will be able to play the game with honor. Here is to playing by

the rules in 2012!

SHESHAN GOLF SCHOOL Where passion fuels

better training

2012 marks the start of something very special for the junior members of Sheshan. Coming this

Spring, Sheshan Head Professional Cyrus Janssen will partner with Titleist to offer a new series

of junior training programs at Sheshan Golf Club.

Cyrus is a Titleist sponsored golf coach and travels regularly back home to his native country of

America to participate in Titliest’s Performance Institute (TPI) Training programs. TPI is the

largest organization in the world dedicated to improving golf games based on athletic and

physical training.

Based in California, TPI has spent the past 10 years developing the #1 Junior Training Program

in the world. TPI’s Junior Training Program is based on the philosophy of Long Term Athletic

Development (LTAD) teaching children to become athletes first and golfers second. This

training is very unique and has produced some of the best junior golfers in the world.

There is no secret why kids in America and Europe have more power and achieve faster

success in golf. They are trained in an athletic way allowing them to produce incredible speeds

that make the game of golf easier. This concept is unheard of in China, however starting in

2012 Sheshan Golf Club will offer the first and only TPI Junior Program in Mainland China!

Starting this March, Sheshan’s TPI Junior Program will be the ultimate way for your junior

golfer to learn golf in the most developed, proven successful way. We look forward to

welcoming your junior golfer into our new program and growing and expanding the games of

our junior golfers even more in 2012!
