The 21st century is customizable. In ten years, the teacher who hasn’t yet figured out how to use technology to personalize learning will be the teacher out of a job. Differentiation won’t make you ‘distinguished’; it’ll just be a natural part of your work.

my role in 2012.... eLearning

e-learning Educator

where we are at... eLearning

2012 the year of technological & e-learning transition

the beginning of a roll-out of an opt in 1:1 program supplemented by an increase in available netbooks across the school...

a move which has been thrust upon us by Kevin Rudd’s promise that every year 9-12 student have 24-7 access to a laptop...

any one class, that you teach, may have students who ‘BYOD’  their own iPad, android tablet, netbook, laptop or ultrabook, students who have a government netbook or students who have opted to not have a digital device in the classroom...

greater access to existing desktop computer labs because of the increase of students having their own devices...

what this means... eLearning

Pedagogical ShiftThe implementation of a BYOD system means that we need to adopt a student-centred model of teaching and learning

With different devices students will not have uniform access to applications and ways of accessing the curriculum

Teachers will need to empower students to select different ways to engage the curriculum and produce work that fits their situation

Positive: increases student agency and ownership and should improve student engagement and motivation

Negative: things will be a little bit messy as teachers and students get used to the shift in teaching and learning design

Page 48: E learning @ Berwick Secondary College - trends, present and future

some points to consider... eLearning

Some Ideas...- it is the teacher, not technology, that has the biggest impact upon teaching and learning

- technology is merely another tool, that if used well, enhances education outcomes

- start small and slow, allow space for learning and getting students on board with learning something new

- try to be excited about experimenting and sharing your stories, even if they don’t go so well!

- if you are thinking technology will not do ‘this’ or ‘that’, it probably will, so ask around and do some online investigating
