I have had fifty-two Sundays to stand in the pulpit and deliver a message of hope and joy. There have been three hundred and sixty-five days where I have been able to pray with, and for, the city of Augusta. This year has given me space to reflect on areas where our church is thriving, as well as look at places where our church can improve. Over that time, two primary questions have come to dominate my thinking. 1. What are the marks of a healthy community? What are the key signifiers that a church is thriving? (Hint: The answer is NOT attendance or money. Those two statistics make great servants, but terrible masters.) 2. How can we create an objective standard of excellence for all that we do at FBC Augusta? It is our goal to tell people about the greatest news the world has ever heard, and that task is made exponentially easier when we have tools to evaluate our various ministry areas. Over the next six weeks, you will hear a new sermon series from 1 John that we are calling Community Is. Each week, we will look at different attributes that make up a healthy and vibrant church. For the first message, we will center on the reality that any healthy community must be Christ-Centered. I am so excited to begin this new series. I hope that, together, we can begin to think more deeply about the two questions that have been on my heart and mind. See you on Sunday, Will

First Thoughts

Dear Church,

It is hard to believe, but I have been the pastor of this amazing church for a full calendar year! “Time flies when you are having fun” has become a staple statement in my repertoire, because it fits so well with my experience at our church.

Those two statistics make great servants, but terrible masters.)
