IT WOKE UP AND THE DINOSAUR WAS NO LONGER THERE
i
Qui giace Raffaello Sanzio:da lui, quando visse, la natura temette d’esser vinta,
ora che egli è morto, teme di morire
D’AILLEURS, C’EST TOUJOURS LES AUTRES QUI MEURENT

Though they’d been informed of the eclipse, everybody panicked when the streets went suddenly dark.

The perfect reproduction, the absolute copy as distinct from the original, the possibility to create, duplicate, to endlessly multiply in the realms of art, literature and thinking, texts, authors, quotations and references, in order to build a milieu of innumerable possibilities and eternal returns. These operations are both, fascinating and anxious. And now what?

An empty page, specifi cally designed for the never present Félix González-Torres. A name that vanishes behind his oeuvre’s “permanent change”.Gabriele Di Ma eo, for this issue of E il topo devoted to the concept of me-as-magazine, requested a private picture/portrait of Félix González-Torres. Our request was turned down. We were told that it was an essen al part of the ar st’s statement not to allow any photograph of himself to be reproduced. This prohibi on is conceptually related to the idea that the image of the ar st places him in a determined me frame, while the inten on of Félix González-Torres is just the opposite: that of the perpetua on of melessness. Also, the personal image of the ar st would create an aura that wouldn’t allow the work to stand and live on its own as the only legacy to be le behind. We were also told that González-Torres, even went so far as to limit the number of interviews he gave, and chose to avoid the describing or talking about the meaning of his work, preferring to speak about general conceptual ideas.
