Finallyafter a 2-year struggle, a 1.2 kgballoon with Helium gas as thefuel attached to a parachuteand a payload with 10 sensorswas launched successfully intospace on August 23. The bal-loon burst at a very high alti-tude and the parachute withthe payload landed in a field atKuthunur, near Kanchi-puram. The payload was re-trieved for studying the datacollected by it.

the three founding brothers ofthe popular retail chainSaravana Stores, passedaway on Sep. 3.

He was 76, and was a longtime resident of RamanathanStreet, T. Nagar.

He was born in a farmingfamily in Panika Nadar Kudiyi-ruppu, a small village in Thoo-thukudi.

Yogaratnam was the first toleave his village and come toChennai in 1969 to start asmall utensil shop in T. Nagar.He was soon joined by hisbrothers Rajaratnam andSelvaratnam.

The following years werespent in consolidating andgrowing the business. In 1977,the first Saravana Store wasopened at the shopping hub ofT. Nagar.

Today, it has over 60 storesacross the state and its an-nual revenue is estimated at

Sir, I am a resident of Janakiram Street, West Mambalam. WhenRangarajapuram Y-shaped flyover was opened in 2012, there was one-way rule from Railway Border Road side to Bazullah Road via theflyover in the morning and vice-versa in the evening for the convenienceof the office goers. However since last one year the system has beenchanged and only vehicles from Bazullah Road are allowed to ply theflyover. EB junction boxes abandoned on road marginSir, Unused EB junction boxes have been abandoned on the pavement

of Ponnambalam Salai near its junction with 39th Street (West K.KNagar) for the past six months. The foundations for the junction boxeswere made long ago, but the boxes are yet to be erected on them andput in use. They are rusting day by day and are also blocking thepavement. Metro Rail completes Saidapet-DMS tunneling workBy Our Staff Reporter

Metro Rail completed the tunnels betweenSaidapet and DMS on Sept. 1. The work wasleft incomplete when the Russian contractorMosmetrostroy abandoned the work as it wasnearing completion. The remaining work wascompleted with the help of workers borrowedfrom Afcons.

The parallel tunnel on the 3.3-km route wascompleted in July.

A senior official said that fresh contractswould be given to build stations on the Saidapet-DMS stretch. He said that the completion oftunneling on the Saidapet-DMS stretch willbring down cost of the contract. The tunnelswere built without waiting for undergroundstations in Nandanam and Teynampet to becompleted.
