“The Future of Aviation in Kansas City” Mark VanLoh, director, Kansas City Aviation Dept.

As director for the Kansas City Aviation Department,

VanLoh oversees management, development, operation and maintenance for Kansas City International Airport and

Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport.

He holds a bachelor’s degree from Minnesota State University with a triple major in business management,

aviation management and industrial relations with a minor in economics.

VanLoh is a private pilot and a member of the Aircraft

Owners and Pilots Association. He served in the United

States Army from 1978 to 1981, and subsequently served

in the United States Army Reserve while he was in college.

He is married and has two daughters and a son.

Rotary Camp Rummage Sale a Success Laurie Mozley

Thanks to everyone who donated, picked up or dropped off items, helped unpack bags and boxes,

organized and priced the items, encouraged buyers and bought treasures themselves! Over $1650 was

made over the 3 day sale. Many people commented on what a wonderful facility we have. Leftover

items were donated to City Union Mission. The money will be used to update some of the Camp’s office

equipment.

President Marc Horner opened the Sept. 15 meeting in the

Muehlebach's Royal Hall and asked if anyone knew what month is was. A few volunteered an answer, but the tone was set. ―Keystroke‖

Carl Bolte accompanied Bob Lager who sang America the Beautiful. President Marc led the pledge and invited Kent Coxe up to offer the

invocation. Ray Van Eman added a gracious welcome to Paul Schleicher who came as Steve Schleicher's guest.

Bob Eltonhead was excused from the speaker introduction after he

broke into KU Med Center for open heart surgery last Thursday, and will be home Friday to rest up. Ken Beardsley enters St. Luke’s on

the Plaza for knee surgery and will recover at home. Our thoughts and prayers include Bob and Ken and all on the mend at home.

We heard Mike Sanders speak on behalf of the International Service

Committee to promote clean drinking water for Mexican schools.

President Marc returned with announcements including next week’s work parties scheduled for Sept. 24

at Cristo Rey High School, and for Rotary Youth Camp. We heard that the following week marks the Dedication of the Korean War Memorial at Washington Square at 3 p.m. on Wed. Sept. 28. On Oct. 13

we meet in Municipal Auditorium to celebration its 75th Anniversary. Fireside meetings are set for Oct. 13-15… and (not even least) the Kearney Club’s Oct. 21 – 22 Haunted Trail Ride. Who knows what evil lurks

on Kearney trails? All of this led up to the announcement of the last two Strategic Imperatives: Number 5, The Rotary Youth Camp; and Number 6 the ―Bridge from Rotary 1.0 to Rotary 2.0‖.

Steve Burger stepped to the podium to introduce Dr. Nick Franano, CEO of Novita Therapuetics. Dr. Franano gave a remarkably eye-opening presentation entitled, ―Life Science as the Fourth Leg of Regional

Economy.‖ For those who missed it, and for those want to hear this presentation again, it will be podcast on Rotary Club 13’s web site. Short version: life science is the future of business in this region, the bright

spot in a downsizing economy. This was one very captivating presentation.

Camp Enterprise Fosters Perseverance in Young Businesspeople This year’s Camp Enterprise, held at the Rotary Youth Camp, was executed with grace by co-chairs

Elliott Goldstein and Paul William with help from Rotary 13 volunteers and Camp Director Laurie Mozley.

For two days, high school students from all over the KC metro participated in activities to give them an

understanding of economics and business in American society, as well as to teach them values which will help them to be savvy business people later in life.

―This is the camp that profit built,‖ said Rotary 13 President Marc Horner in reference to the camp and

all of its amenities as he spoke before the crowd of participants seated within. ―All charity comes from profits.‖

Activities included a poster contest, discussion questions over business ethics, a talent show, and a

computer game to test the students’ business acumen and ability to work as a team. The game let the

students act as executives at a company which makes a semi-futuristic technology called a ―Holo-generator.‖ They were tasked to make the company as profitable as possible with strategies based on

real-world business issues. The game itself is run on highly-complex algorithms which insure that the consequences accurately reflect the students’ decisions as if they were a part of a real management

team.

In addition, participants got to hear from established leaders in the local business community such as

Gail Worth of Worth Harley-Davidson, Sean Stormes, columnist for the Kansas City Business Journal, Jan

Marcason, Rotarian and Councilwoman for the 4th District of Kansas City, Missouri, and Airick West from

the board of the Kansas City, Missouri School District.

Bowling News Dick Retrum

The Club 13 Bowling League draft is just nine days away. This important meeting will be to pick this season’s teams. It will be held at Al and Mary Tikwart’s house Wed. Sept. 28 at 6:30 p.m. Food and

drinks will be available. Bowlers are encouraged to bring their favorite covered dish to add to the buffet. Those who wish to be included in the draft and the spouses thereof are invited. Please RSVP at 913-432-

We bowl at the Ward Parkway Bowling Lanes at 1523 W. 89th St. off State Line Rd. The cost is $15 for three games. We warm up at 4:20 p.m. and start at 4:30. On Oct. 5 we bowl to establish averages and

the season starts on Oct. 12.

Become a part of this club’s rich history of bowling fun and fellowship. What better way is there to meet

and get to know other members of your club? And remember…you don’t have to be a great bowler to play with us.
