“Life Science as the Fourth Leg of the Regional Economy” Dr. Nick Franano M.D. president, Novita Therapeutics

F. Nicholas Franano is a graduate of the University of Kansas and

received his master’s in Biomedical Research and a doctorate in medicine from Washington University. He completed a residency in

diagnostic radiology and a fellowship in interventional radiology at Johns Hopkins Hospital and is a diplomate of the American College

of Radiology.

He currently serves as chairman of the Biological Sciences Advisory Board at the University of Kansas and serves as a program mentor

for the PIPELINE Entrepreneurial Immersion Program. In 2009, Dr. Franano was named an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year for

the Central Midwest.

Novita Therapeutics identifies opportunities to develop innovative medical devices and pharmaceuticals and completes research to

validate product opportunities. It then builds a business plan, raises

capital, identifies an initial leadership team, and spins the products out of Novita into new companies.

Ask the Exec with Danny O’Neil at the Roasterie Plant Rotarians:

It has been said, ―The future is in your hands.‖ That’s why we’re taking action NOW … for the future of

our club … and the future of young professionals.

Our first step in shaping that future happens 5-7 pm Thursday, September 15, at The Roasterie

Plant, 1204 West 27th St., Kansas City, Mo., with founder Danny O’Neill. And we want you to participate!

It’s all part of Ask the Exec, the reformulated Profiles in Leadership program that now will focus on

retaining and attracting young members while helping these up-and-comers build their careers.

Members of Rotary and other young KC professionals will hear Danny speak, have the opportunity to ask questions and enjoy refreshments — all in a small venue that invites networking. Registration is limited

to 50.

Young Rotarians, this is a great opportunity for you to connect with other up-and-coming professionals in the Kansas City business world, and get to know these execs.

Those of you who have passed the ―up-and-comer‖ stage may still attend IF you bring a potential

member as a guest.

Future hosts for these bimonthly Ask the Exec sessions include John McDonald of Boulevard Brewery

(Nov. 2) and KC Mayor Sly James (Jan. 24) at Union Station. You’ll hear their perspectives on leadership, making connections, benefits of community service and much more.

At each session, a member of Club 13 will speak briefly about the value of a Rotary membership that

offers networking opportunities among young and seasoned professionals throughout the lifetime of one’s career.

Editorial: Thank You for Your Mentorship, Rotary Steve Nichols

As we look into the future, it is important to remember the past. When I visited the Rotary office and

saw the pictures of past presidents on the wall, I was humbled. The history of our club defines who we are and plots the course for future generations. Truly, in my capacity as a member of the Downtown

Kansas City Rotary Club 13, I stand on the shoulders of giants.

Of the many benefits I enjoy as a member, none is more salient than mentorship from my fellow

Rotarians. Waves of pure anxiety awaited me at every meeting in my Tyro days, but I returned because I knew their collective wisdom would be my reward if I could just keep my composure. Your acceptance

of me into your community has put me at ease, and for that I am grateful.

Rotary must adapt to survive, but we cannot forget the contributions of generations past. They make Club 13 what it is today.

Thank you Letter from Janet Ellis I would like to thank everyone for their prayers, cards, flowers, gifts and food I received during my

recent illness.

I really can't put in words how much they meant to me. I especially liked the big Kenny card. The doctors and nurses at SMMC got a kick out of it too! Unfortunately, I couldn't make the Kenny concert at

Arrowhead Stadium but I did get a tee-shirt. Sort of like a consolation prize.

I am homebound now, healing and getting stronger each day and miss seeing you all. I want to thank all

those filling in for me at the Rotary office and a special thanks to all the committee chairs for rising to the occasion. I am sure President Marc appreciated it too!

Last Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011 Pete Burgess

Last Thursday was even better than our last last Thursday. The

weather was top-down gorgeous, a beautiful day to drive the river and cruise the hills into Kansas City. Those lucky enough to be born

in September served as Club 13 greeters as we queued up to enter the Muehlebach’s Trianon room.

President Marc Horner opened the meeting. Bob Lager came up to

lead a rousing ―Happy Birthday‖ tribute then launched us into “God Bless America” with Past President Captain Carl Bolte on piano.

President Marc led the pledge and John Christensen took the podium to deliver the invocation. Colonel Laster in a black cowboy

hat greeted four visitors and four visiting Rotarians with a warm welcome that led to a banner exchange with the Fresno, California

Club. After exchanging banners, President Marc invited calls to Executive Director Janet Ellis who is recovering at home while John

Platt continues his recovery at Villa St. Joseph near 119th and

Rosewood.

President Marc confirmed the Jan Armstrong, Pat Dunn, Charlie Huffman, Andy Beyer and Steve

Nichols were elected to the club’s nominating committee to serve along with our five past presidents. Carl ―The Player‖ Bolte has passes to the Quality Hill Playhouse and The American Heartland Theater. See

Carl for these valuable passes.

Announcements were made, and made, and made. Following President Marc’s comment on his lack of golf training, a past president was heard warning members to wear a helmet to the Sept. 20 golf event.

Bill Moran was allowed to intimidate the microphone in a wild pitch for volunteers to come work on Sept. 24 at the Cristo Rey High School that, by the way, graduated 100 percent of its class, and 100

percent of that class went on to college. Now that achievement sets the bar! President Marc then led us through Strategic Imperative 4, to define the value proposition of membership in Club 13, or what is the

benefit of being a Rotarian?

Law Professor Sean O’Brien calls for the abolishment of the death penalty

Roxana Schaffe introduced Professor Sean O’Brien who is a defense attorney and professor at the UMKC Law School. Professor O’Brien addressed the issue of the death penalty and alternatives. He gave

an enlightening presentation that captured and convincingly dissected the issue, leaving scant room for disagreement with his position while showing that he loves the law and truly believes in justice for all.

on ―Life Science as the Fourth Leg of Regional Economy‖.

Reminder: Let the Office Know if you Plan to Bring a guest The good news is that Club 13 Rotarians continue to reach out to those in the community who would

make great new Rotarians. The bad news is that sometimes they forget to let the office know ahead of time. Please remember to let the office know beforehand when you plan to bring a guest to a meeting.

This will help to ensure that every meeting runs as smoothly as possible. Thank you.

Bowling News, Sept. 12, 2011 Dick Retrum

Are you ready? Are you ready for some BOWLING? Let’s – get – ready – to – RUMBLE! Well maybe not.

How about ROLL?

Greetings everyone and welcome back. Those of you who pay close attention will notice that we are starting much later than usual.

The draft party will be held at Mary & Al Tikwart’s house in Mission Hills on Sept. 28. This event is for

current league members; spouses; and Tyro’s who want to join the fun and fellowship of bowling.

Watch for sign-up sheets on the table at Rotary lunch. Please keep in mind that bowling skills are not required. The league has bowlers at every level of ability.

We bowl at Ward Parkway Lanes at 4:30 p.m. every Wednesday. We establish averages on Oct. 5 and

start competitive play on Oct. 12. The cost is $15 for three games. The later starting time and shorter season is to attract new bowlers. We hope it works.

I drove by Al Tikwart’s house yesterday just to make sure I knew where it was. He has a sign on his

front door that reads: ―Free Beer Here (Tomorrow Only).‖ Oh well, have a nice day, unless you already have other plans.

Healthcare Legislation Clarified Rotary 13 was recently visited by Judy Baker, regional director of the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human

Services, to discuss the new healthcare legislation, or ―Obamacare,‖ as it is known colloquially. With an issue as politically charged as healthcare, the presentation of the facts can be a difficult task. Baker

spoke from the perspective of a supporter of the new law.

She described a paradox in our current healthcare system; the U.S. leads the world in healthcare

innovation, but falls far short in patient outcomes. The status quo for family health insurance coverage is unsustainable, and medical costs exceed our ability to pay. She also stated that two-thirds of the cost of

medical treatment for the uninsured is borne by taxpayers.

According to Baker, the new healthcare legislation is aimed to address these issues. The desired result, she says, is to improve the quality of patient outcomes and maintain our leadership in healthcare

innovation.

Elvis Presley’s Cousin Entertains Tyrotarians Jerry Presley, Elvis’ second cousin, put on a show at Bob and Sally

Bibb’s house during the Tyro Music Party last Friday. He sang songs made famous by the King and shared stories about his experiences as a

blood relative of one of the most famous people in history. He displayed an abundance of talent in his own right and his performance was lauded

by all in attendance.
