We send well wishes to Don Patterson who is recovering at Research Hospital. Lindsay Ripley is in KU Med Center fighting pneumonia, and Tom Davidson continues his recovery from surgery. Ford thanked the volunteers from our club and from the Lee's Summit club who pitched in for the May 7th spring work morning at the Rotary Youth Camp. Now we look for a big second turnout on the 21st. Hal Lowenstein hit the podium to call on members to feed the homeless in our community kitchen project… saying "you'll thank me for having you do this". Marc Horner pitched the COG party on June 30th at the Armacost Museum in Grandview (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J56eilI_2Uc). The committee managed to hit a price point of $20 per person. Ford recognized Rotarians who hit milestone years of service: Tom Kirkwood – 60 years; Al Sondern and Jerry Rosenbloom – 40 years; Tom Beal and Al Kohler – 35 years; Chris Boland, Bill Mitchell, Steve Reiff and Roger Sandquist – 30 years; and Mike Horton, George Matteson – 25 years. Vivien Jennings snared author Erik Larson for a second time and introduced him for what was a truly remarkable presentation that recounted the development of his new book and provided savory insights into intriguing life in 1933-1934 Berlin as the new US Ambassador and his family arrived to the represent the United States in the changing capital of Hitler's Germany. All this with a great sense of humor no doubt born of a great sense of accomplishment in have his newest book published on May 10, 2011 which coincided with the infamous May 10th burning of books in Berlin.
Community Kitchen Project sign-up a success Monday, May 23rd we will have volunteers serving hundreds of people in need of lunch at the Kansas City Community Kitchen. The Community Service Committee adopted this new project at the beginning of this year and had served lunch three different times before determining it was a project for Club 13. It was opened up to the general membership at the luncheon meeting May 19th. Sign-up sheets were made available with dates for the year. There were an overwhelming number of sign-ups for May and June. Thank you very much! The June 17th group will be contacted soon with details of the project. However, we still need help for August 9th, October 4th and December 6th. If these dates work for you call Janet at the Rotary office to get on the list. Hal Lowenstein will lead the May group, joined by his wife Wanda and members Kara Bennett, Denny Bolte, Ann Johnson, Phil Kinney, Tom Martin and Paula Willett. The Community Kitchen located at 750 Paseo is the cornerstone of the Episcopal Hunger Relief Network. We are just one of numerous groups that will serve a daily lunch to countless people that are in need of a meal. Community Service Committee members are : Bill Moran, Chair, Tony Andresen, Kara Bennett, Lee Brumitt, Jerry Cooke, Dan Hertenstein, Mary Lou Jaramillo, Hal Lowenstein, Bernie Madden, Al Tikwart, Tom Van Dyke, Ray Van Eman, Kent Verden and Paula Willett.
In MemoriamIn the spirit of remembrance, appreciation and gratitude, Club 13 remembers those of our club who have died in the past year.
Jim Shultz Matt Dillane Ewing Lusk
