Oxygen sensitive products can be protected by oxygen

scavengers. This is well known and several technologies areavailable. BERICAP produces closures for carbonated andstill beverages with a built-in oxygen scavenging capacity.

The impact of an oxygen scavenging closure on the oxygensensitive product is shown inChart 1. Immediately afterfilling there is oxygen from various sources inside a bottle in the beverage, in the walls of the bottle, in the head-space. Modern filling technology can keep this initiallevel relatively low. After filling, until consumption, oxygeningress occurs through the bottle and through the cap.Ingress through the cap is possible by a poor mechanicalseal or by permeation. The oxygen scavenger integratedin the closure will predominantly absorb the oxygenwhich is or gets into the headspace after filling. Theclosure contributes to preservation of the oxygen sensitiveproduct, but the closure cannot absorb all oxygen gettingaccess to the beverage from other sources. BERICAPoxygen scavenging closures O2S have proven in thefield to preserve O2sensitive products in combinationwith barrier- and/or oxygen scavenging bottles.

The BERICAP DoubleSeal SuperShortyO2S and Double-Seal O2S are based on BERICAPs DoubleSeal closureconcept for carbonated soft drinks which stands for a

safe mechanical seal and high carbonation retentionin cold and hot environment. The oxygenscavenging compound which complieswith EU and USA regulations is mouldedinside the bore seal and covers the maxi-mum possible surface.

The layer of oxygen scavenging compound is designed toexpose a maximum surface to the O2sensitive drink toenhance the scavenging speed. The inner side of the topplate and the inner surface of the boreseal are totallycovered by the oxygen scavenger. The DoubleSeal of theclosure remains totally free from any compound. To avoid

any infiltration of sterilizing liquid used for aseptic fillingthe oxygen scavenging compound overlaps the lowerend of the boreseal.

BERICAP DoubleSeal SuperShortyO2S and DoubleSealO2S can be applied on standard cappers. BERICAP pro-vides technical service to evaluate, modify and set thecappers.
