Collecting e-books may be fiscally advantageous, but the ramifications on personnel and their responsibilities for all of acquisition, cataloging, and access tasks have been neglected.INDIANA UNIVERSITY KOKOMO11Theory practice12Selection criteria for e-books relevancy to the curriculum appropriateness of the medium; suitability of form to content strength of present holdings, in any format, in same or similar subject timeliness of the material; lasting value of material reputation of author, issuing body, and/or publisher language; what foreign language materials are relevant to obtain? expected demand; frequency of borrowed materials via ILL or request delivery; or suggested demand via a faculty request price/relative cost of material in relation to the budget and other available materials Cost in line with projected use no textbooks, popular literature or fiction purchased as an e-book accurate content fills gaps in collection vendor mandates no or reasonable restrictions acceptable licensing agreements reliable vendor with proven track record with e-books/customer support vendor responsiveness to access problems Annual hosting fees Perpetual access rights with one-time purchase customer support by vendor from purchase through continual access ILL lending capabilities; electronic transfer of content permitted

Prompt invoicing; {weekly or monthly for DDA titles] ADA compliant provides Web access; ability to use medium with IP authentication or from off-campus via a proxy server uses an intuitive& user-friendly interface downloadable easily accessible from multiple devices (both Apple and Android) as well as multiple browsers or apps mobile friendly offline use availability offers value-added features such as keyword searching, browsing, highlighting, copy/paste, and printing number of concurrent usersavailability to change a SUPO title to a MUPO title after initial purchase How cumbersome is the requirement to create an account or to download required software Conforms to developing interface standards impact of open access models such as Knowledge Unlatched or Open Book Publishers Subscribe or purchase? Who has selection responsibility? Acquisition priority of vendors if more than one vendor offers title What is the standard for number of simultaneous users? use of vendor selected subject collections flexibility with choice of short-term loan

flexibility on choice of number of short-term loans prior to trigger for purchase availability of prompt trigger reports availability of prompt short-term loan reports Exclude high-price publishers for DDA/PDA programs Price ceiling to exclude titles from DDA/PDA programs Exclude publishers who dont allow short term loans Exclude high-price publishers for short term loan increase (i.e. at the beginning the short term loan is 10% and then 6 months later it jumps to 45%) Packaged content provides valuable titles; not a few solid titles and the rest is esoteric discoverability shared catalogs and ebooks; how does that impact selections and timing of selections? provision of good MARC records through vendor or ERMS ease of weeding; how many places do you need to remove it? (i.e. library catalog & vendor interface?) Cataloging vs. Electronic Resources Management System Who catalogs? On-site ILS or off-site ILS Linking into course management systems Ease of removing titles from data vendor interface can you retrieve title level turnaways counter-compliant statistics; able to determine usage in a meaningful way

Collection Development: PhilosophyThe Purchase College Library evaluates, collects, and provides access to materials that support the diverse and changing nature of the curriculum (undergraduate and graduate programs) and the research needs of the faculty, students, and staff. Our goal is to provide materials that are current, unique, and in-demand and to determine the best format and platform for those materials to be delivered. With a "just-in-time" rather than "just-in-case" approach to collection development, we will do our best to meet the needs of our primary constituents in a timely manner, and to build a comprehensive, circulatingcollection of academic resources in the visual/performing arts and the liberal arts and sciences.

Collection Development: E-Books

Collection Development: The Future Use ILLiad as a demand-driven, data-driven acquisitions (mediated requests) platform Promote e-books/ebrary to faculty & students as a get-it-now service, or undercover PDA Look into other ebook PDA/DDA collections Stop wasting money!Photo Credit: AMsloan via Compfight ccQuestionsRia LukesTechnical Services LibrarianIndiana University [email protected]
