Interesting stuff including a great deal of material for not a great deal of money—these relatively low key sales allow us to do that.

We have pulled together many ancient pieces that are in the $80 to $100 range—Greek and Roman silver and bronze in condition that provides all the main elements of the design along with indications of use when they were actual currency, coins that display the patina of the ages, less actively collected pieces with amazing designs (look at lot 51!). There are some unusual and more valuable things here too—rarities like the Theban piece (lot 13) with an infant Hercules, an attractive Bar Kochba Revolt bronze (lot 21) and an evenly worn and handsome Alexandrian drachm with Nilus and a crocodile on the reverse. The English section has pieces formed in the 1950s from Seaby’s, the London firm Americans knew best because of the staff members who travelled to the US and attended coin club meetings. Frank Robinson’s great collection provides some choice early material and four of the great 20th century penny rarities.

Scotland? Only one coin but at the end of this sale you will find a fascinating collection of medals related to the last of the long string of major battles the Scots lost against the English, Culloden. There is

also a brief history placing the medals in context. They are mostly worn but that reflects the passion of the owners at the time. These were treasured and handled and they show it.Ireland is represented by a few scarce to rare pieces. Following that you will find coin weights, an important part of commerce at the time many of the coins we now collect were current and used in trade. The token section begins with two Irish rarities from the early 18th century. This is a short series of appealing pieces on fairly substantial flans. Then one of the more significant late 18th century pieces, Kent 1 begins the section offering Dalton and Hamer issues.

And then you will find ten choice 19th century tokens. Take a look. They were the successors to the 18th century series and they were an important part of day-to-day life. The British government issued no

currency copper between 1808 and 1821 (and it wasn’t until 1825 that anything larger than a farthing was available) so it’s no wonder that most of these tokens were well worn. The pieces offered here are NOT worn—a good time to pick up a few. A bit of US type (the place where I began my numismatic travels), and three book lots. I hope you enjoy this little catalog. And, please think of us when you want to sell, a piece, a group, a collection. We value what you may have and we will treat it (and you) accordingly. Allan, Marnie, & Lief Davisson 2-21-2017

The 1918H and 1919H and the 1918 KN and 1919KN pennies (lots 103-106) show a faint outline of the obverse portrait in the reverse field. The result, in addition to the effect on the field, is loss

of detail on Britannia. What happened? This seems a design characteristic of this issue—the portrait requires more metal to fill the die and the reverse suffers. London issues of this type show the same characteristic.

A Gravesend boat sailing left; GRAVESEND TOKEN / A crown and a naval coronet between laurel sprigs; NAVAL PENNY around above; 17—97 below. Uncirculated; lightly toned over original surfaces with mint red particularly on reverse; a slight spot on the obverse and the reverse. This example has an uncommonly high rim around the edges. The edge is plain with vertical marks suggesting the flan was oversized and forced into what served as the collar. $2000 This is a rare and dramatic token of exceptional design that has commanded strong prices. The Wayne Anderson piece, ex Jan, sold for $5310 in 2000. Baldwin sold an example in 2006 for about $3000 US including the commission. The R.S. Brown example (ex Noble) sold for just under $2500 in 2009. The reverse die was weak, accounting for the limited number of pieces known. The dies on this piece are fully intact. It is possible that this was an early trial of the die.

Edge: plain but, as the cataloger for R. Brown noted, “filed.” Uncirculated; red and brown. Slight spots on obverse; otherwise choice with much original color and mirror luster. $750 The DNW cataloger believed the filing was “to deceive.” While this seems a reasonable explanation, the work was done very early in the life of this token and another possible explanation was that it was done at or near the time of minting to remove an unwanted edge legend. cullodEn And thE “bonniE princE”It is August 1745 and Jacobite hopes rise again with “Bonnie Prince Charlie,” grandson of James II, launching yet another uprising to restore the British throne to the Stewarts.

The effort ended with defeat at the Battle of Culloden, April 1746. Medals marked the events and the people involved and the following small collection reflects some of the key events during this period. Most of the medals show some wear. They were part of people’s lives and were often personal mementoes of the events.

The first medal in the group shows his father James III and a map of Scotland. Scotland’s ambitions were a small part of the negotiations that were part of the War of Spanish Succession, but James was trying to promote his cause. The next medal shows the young prince and his brother.

It was Charles who rallied Scottish forces in 1745 and by the 16th of August the Jacobites were at the gates of Edinburgh. By mid-November Carlisle had submitted to Charles who was proclaimed “King James VIII and III.” Charles, overoptimistic, soon sent part of the Jacobite army further into England even though the English troops outnumbered them three to one. The army got within 200 kilometers of London but in December 1745 they were stopped at Derby.

Retreating north on the 6th of December with the Duke of Cumberland in pursuit, Charles and his depleted army reached Carlisle on the 19th and left the next day heading back to Scotland. This was the end of Scottish control of English land. Three medals offered here note Cumberland’s Carlisle “no battle” success.

In January 1746 the Jacobites were successful in the battle of Falkirk Muir but the success was temporary. It all came to an end on April 16th, 1746 at Culloden on what was known as Drumossie Moor. An exhausted and outnumbered Jacobite army was destroyed and the Hanoverian follow-up was a time of killing and atrocities.

The Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle in 1748 provided a truce between England and France, important to Jacobite history because Charles had repeatedly sought French help with his quest. Woolf (The Medallic Record of the Jacobite Movement) notes that Charles had become an embarrassment to the French and the Treaty required among other things that “he should be expelled from French territory.” The medal dated 1745 was probably made, in an act of “bravado,” around the time of the completion of the treaty. The last medal in the group celebrates peace.
