From Your Hello E2 From your Chapter Director – Well, the 2016 Buckeye Rally in Canfield, OH is now history. Ten (10) E-2 members attended the rally and visited the sights around this beautiful part of Ohio. At the rally, E-2 assisted Rider Ed with the Amazing Team Challenge, an on-bike skills game. We also had our E-2 ROCKS! rock decorated per the rally theme, but did not place in that competition. We did, however, receive recognition for our website and newsletter, taking home 1st place awards for both for first quarter 2016 in the southwest section! I also received my Senior Master patch at the Masters’ Breakfast on Saturday morning. We are looking forward to the 2017 Buckeye Rally, which is scheduled to be in Mansfield, OH. June was a busy month overall, aside from the Buckeye Rally. We had some very successful rides, including an overnight ride led by Tom Calvert, which was his first lead as an E-2 member. And, as I write this column, we have a couple of other events and rides to look forward to, to finish off the month. Then we hit July, another month fully packed with rides and events. There will be a couple of changes in the July ride schedule, which will be communicated at the July gathering on July 7th, as well as through my weekly e-mail updated. So keep your eyes open and your ears perked up, so you don’t miss any of the updated information. There is also the Region D Rally July 28 – July 30, in Coldwater, Michigan. You can find more information on this event in this newsletter, as well on at the Region D website, www.gwrra-regiond.org. Lastly, please remember those friends who are going through health and/or other personal issues. Ken & Nancy Fread need our thoughts and prayers as Kenny faces his cancer surgery on July 5th. And recently, the Cincinnati area chapters lost a long time member and friend, Richard Elsen, so keep his wife Linda in your thoughts and prayers as she and her family are going through their loss. Remember, the first word in the GWRRA motto is “FRIENDS”!

“CHAPTER E-2 TEAM” From Your

Hello E-2 Riders and Co-Riders and friends,

Since we’ve just celebrated the 4th of July, I thought we would take a quick look the Pledge of Allegiance. Most folks do not recite it as it is written; most insert pauses where they do not belong. Grammatically speaking, a comma is inserted into a sentence to indicate a pause. So, when one recites the Pledge, one should pause at the comma’s, not in the middle of the sentence. Here is how most folks say the Pledge:

I pledge allegiance, To the flag, Of the United States of America.

And to the republic, for which it stands.

One nation, Under God,

Indivisible, With liberty and justice for all.

You may have heard people continue reciting while others pause. Here is how the Pledge looks:

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of Ameri-ca,

And to the Republic for which it stands.

One nation under God,

Indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

If you say it the way it was written, you may notice the em-phasis on certain words . . . and it sounds so much more powerful.

Our deepest thanks and appreciation to everyone of you who served our proud country, without your sacrifice, our Pledge of Allegiance would be meaningless.

Ride safe and Hey, Let’s be careful

out there !!

Hello E-2

We have a lot of fun rides coming up in the month of July this year.

The first ride is on July 3 and will be lead by Dan and Kim Watkins. They have a

scenic and fun ride planed to the natural Bridge State Park. It is neat to see the

Red Rive Gorge and all of the rock formations that lead up to the rock bridge.

They even have a ski lift ride for those who like to ride up some of the steep hills.

For the weekend of July 9 Tom and Cookie are leading a ride to Versailles Kentucky to visit the Woodford Re-

serves facility. The web site looks very interesting and resembles the Jack Daniels distilleries that many of us visit-

ed last year on the way back from Wing Ding. Easy on the samples!

Ron and Lucy are once again leading a ride to Claudia Sanders restaurant on July 16. This is the Colonels wife

and is said to be the better cook. You can lets us know when you return your thoughts on her chicken vs. his.

The Shawshank prison ride has been changed to a Mystery Ride for Sat. the 23rd. This will be rescheduled for

next year along with the Buckeye Rally scheduled for that area.

Please remember that we have the E2 Picnic coming up on August 7. It is always a fun and filling time. Volunteer

sheets will be at our next meeting.

Be safe and have fun!

Riding In Hot Weather: Keeping Cool On Your Bike Being year-round riders, we’ve encountered our fair share of both hot and cold weather conditions. Since riding with full protective gear, ATGATT, is always the best option for safety, we learn how to keep cool while riding in hot weather. Let’s explore the science of Body Cooling. The two primary cooling mechanisms our body uses to keep cool are Convection and Evaporation. Convection is the transfer of energy by moving air across the body. When the air and the skin are at different temperatures, heat transfer occurs from the place of higher tempera-ture toward the place of lower temperature. This helps us cool off in air temperatures be-low about 93 degrees F. Above 93 degrees this hot air flow actually heat us up and adds to the cooling needs as we ride. This is especially critical when riding with bare skin exposed to sun and air on really hot days. For example, at 103 degrees F, the required cooling from this convection heating of the body requires over a quart per hour sweat-evaporation cooling load. This is pretty close to the maximum the body can produce. One might think that covering up in such heat would be a bad idea, but the opposite is actually true. Evaporation is the primary method of cooling the body when air temperatures are above skin temperatures. Sweat cools the body through evaporation working on the principle of “latent heat of vaporization.” That is the amount of heat ab-sorbed or released when water (sweat) changes state from liquid to vapor. One gram of water requires approximately 580 calories of energy to vaporize it. This energy is drawn from the body in the form of heat. Thus as sweat vaporizes, it pulls heat out of the body cooling us down. Wearing wind-breaking materials like mesh jackets and moisture-wicking undergarments dramatically reduces the amount of heat inflicted on the body through convection, thus reducing the amount of heat that your body must lose through evaporation (sweating). Slowing down the airflow across the body to about 10 mph by wearing protective gear reduces the evaporation needs from about 39 ounces of water per hour to about 19 ounces.

Keeping Hydrated Now that we know how much water the body needs while riding in high temperatures, we can see that staying hydrated is one of the most important things to do while on the road. The difference between covering up or not is about 20 ounc-es per hour. Dehydration is a very real danger and not something we can “tough out”. Some signs of dehydration set-ting in include fatigue, darkened urine, sudden lightheadness and a quickened heart rate. Carry plenty of water and stop often to cool off in the shade or in an air conditioned restaurant. Reducing the effects of convection through cover-ing up and wetting down to assist evaporation cooling will reduce the amount of heat that your body must deal with through sweating. Hot weather usually means lots of sun exposure, so get some good sunglasses or a darkened visor to prevent head-aches caused by sun glare. And don’t forget to put sunblock on the back of your neck where your riding gear leaves the skin exposed. Hey there…Tom Calvert here with a

report on the Kentucky Back Roads

Ride!

To begin with, I could not have asked for a better

group to ride with!!!! It was a great group and every-

one seemed to have a really good time! The weather

was cooperative in the fact that there was no rain but it

was a little on the warm side (90 degrees +). The

motel was very nice and there was a steak house right

next door which had great steaks at a reasonable

price.

As to the ride itself…we left Quaker Steak and Lube

with 8 bikes for a total of 12 riders. That was a good

size group to ride with. After traveling to Portsmouth

we had lunch at a great little restaurant just before we

crossed the Ohio River into Kentucky. Continuing on

cross country we arrived in Elliott County in the area

where I grew up. There were lots of curvy roads there

as well as a trip through part of Laurel Gorge where

we saw some great scenery with lots of cliffs!

Continuing on we eventually arrived at the motel to

end the first day. A friend from X-2 met us there and

rode the next day with us… A really great trip to this point, if I do say so myself.

It’s Sunday morning and all are ready for another day of great riding! After a couple of “boondoggles” we finally

got straightened out and continued the trip into the Red River Gorge area via the Nada Tunnel Road. Leaving

there we continued on to Beattyville Ky. and then traveled route 52 into Irvine Ky. for lunch. Route 52 is a really

bad road with lots of curves! We seldom got over 40 mph! A really terrible road to ride! Yeah Tom, get real!!!

Lots of fun!

Arriving in Irvine we had lunch and then headed home. Some of the group wanted to get home A.S.A.P. so we

split into two groups. I led one group to I-75 and then home while the other group continued cross country and

home by a different route. All in all, a great two day ride with great people and fantastic roads! Looking forward to

another ride in the future with more of our great chapter of Goldwingers!!! I will say that riding with a group of

people is a great way to get to know everyone…. E-2 people really do ROCK!!! Nada Tunnel is a historic 900-

foot (270 m) long tunnel along Kentucky Route 77 in Powell County, Kentucky, in the United States. Formerly a

railway tunnel, the presently paved tunnel has often been described as the "Gateway to Red River Gorge" for the

shortcut it provides motorists to the Red River Gorge canyons of the Daniel Boone National Forest.
