HOW TO INTERPRET DYNEK CODE NUMBERS

Code numbering is very important in the stock control and selection of sutures. There are manydifferent types, and this can make the choice difficult. We believe that codes must be kept simpleand should be easy to decipher.

The codes convey three pieces of information:A. The first letter(s) refer to the material.B. The next number(s) refer to the USP thread size.C. The final number(s) refer to the needle code.* If #1 precedes the thread size, this indicates a longer thread length than the standard.For example, N-306 has a 45cm thread, where N-1306 has a 76cm thread.

Pre-cut Lengths:Pre-cut lengths of sutures also have an easy to understand coding system. Please remember thatthe second letter of the code is equal to its numerical partner, i.e. A equals one strand; B equals twostrands; C equals three strands etc. The first number(s) indicate the USP thread size. The last twonumbers represent the thread length in inches eg: SM4024 = Silk x 13 strands size USP 4/0 x 24inches in length.Once the coding is understood it is possible to use the code without the catalogue. In a teachinghospital it is good practice for staff to be able to explain what they are using and how they selectedit.Symbol:The Symbol on the foil packet indicates the needle typeeg: = round bodied taper needle, = reverse cutting needleDouble Armed:Double armed sutures have two symbols ( ) next to the needle profile, to note two needles arein the foil packet.

PACKAGING INFORMATION

Packaging:

The packaging of sutures is very important toeveryone. Consequently, Dynek has developeda suture packet which is easy to use.

All Dynek sutures are colour coded using theinternationally accepted system, which allowseasy transition from one brand to another.

The Dynek primary foil packs are quick andeasy to open revealing the needle locked inplace to help prevent needle stick injury.

Expiry Dates:

To minimise stock holding, every Dynek primarypack and box label has the expiry date clearlyshown. This provides the Operating RoomStaff the ability to issue the sutures to otherareas.

Lot Numbers:

Every Dynek foil and label is clearly markedwith the lot number. Each lot number allows theproduct to be traced through every step ofproduction, ensuring maximum manufacturingcontrol and traceability.

NEEDLE SPECIFICATIONS Types and Suggested Uses

Round Bodied needle with a special hand finished cutting point toallow for easier penetration through hardened or calcified tissue. Theneedle is constructed from a 300 series stainless steel whichpromotes easier penetration with an increased resistance to bending.Ideal for placing heart valves. This needle is frequently used incardiovascular and dental surgery.

Round bodied point for soft, easily penetrated tissues.

For the Operating Room Technician and Surgeon concerned withneedle stick injury, DYNEK has a range of Blunt Point needles forIntestinal Surgery.

A special hand finished reverse cutting needle; this needle has beendesigned specifically for delicate tissue, ideal for plastic surgery. Thepoint of the needle is covered with a plastic envelope to protect thehand honed extra sharp point.

All DYNEK standard reverse cutting needles are strong and retaintheir sharpness. This triangular cutting needle is considerably moreresistant to bending than the standard conventional needle.

A plastic surgery needle with a flat shank, not reverse cutting.Designed to be used with a Gilles needle holder.

A triangular cutting needle with the third cutting edge on the insideapex of the needle.

Side cutting and hand honed for extra sharpness and penetration,commonly used in Ophthalmic surgery.

Needles have been silicone treated as this has shown to increaseease of penetration.

Dynek has introduced its world leading CV300 needles forcardiovascular surgery. This needle has been developed to achieveextra penetration and maximum resistance to bending.

Experience has shown that Vilene* has excellentknot security. The springiness that affects allmonofilaments when removed from the package canbe taken out by a gentle pull. It can be used in allprocedures where polypropylene monofilaments areutilised.

Unlike polypropylene which after sterilisation is waxyin feel and is prone to fraying, Vilene* is smooth, frayfree and supple. Vilene* is sterilised by gammairradiation.

NOTES1. Standard knot pull is as stated in European Pharmacopeia Vol. III and US PharmacopeiaVol. XXI for Non-absorbable sutures Class 1 – plus 25% for non-sterile sutures.

2. Standard knot pull test is made with a simple knot.

3. Elongation is the extension of the material at break or rupture in a straight pull testexpressed as a percentage of the original length.

CV 300 needle - all Dynekcardiovascularsutures use a CV300 needle givingthe Surgeon optimum performancefrom both suture material and needle.

Knotting:As with all synthetic non-absorbable sutures,knot tying requires the standard surgicaltechnique of flat and square ties withadditional throws as indicated by surgicalcircumstance.

VILENE* is a monofilament of PolyvinylideneFluoride (PVDF) which is non–absorbable and isphysiologically inert. Maintaining it’s tensile strengthin situ, Vilene* provides superior clinical benefits tothe Surgeon. Combining the high tensile strengthand low elongation (see chart below) gives itexcellent handling and knotting properties.

DYLOC* is the ideal suture for the discerningSurgeon. Its advantages are:

DYLOC* is soft and very manageable. It tiesvery much like silk as the stretch in the sutureallows for the material to hold its knot.

Dynek CHROMIC gut ischromicised before it is spun intostrands. This allows control overthe amount of chromic contentfor an even absorption rate.

The specialised spinning andgrinding process creates a strandof uniform diameter. The suturestrand is then further polished toachieve maximum smoothness,for reliability and strength.

DermalocDermaloc skin closures are porous to allow for improved healing, the rounded ends resist lifting and curling.

Developed and manufactured in Austraila, this skin tone medical grade material is hypoallergenic, minimisingthe possibility of patient reaction.

Using a high tack acrylic adhesive, Dermaloc skin closures ensure a secure wound closure.

Dermaloc skin closures can be used as the primary wound closure or in larger wounds in conjunction withsutures.

The earlier removal of skin sutures and the use of Dermaloc skin closures to support the incision duringthe natural healing process will minimise scarring.
