Focus

• Military Applications– DAML+OIL Ontology development from related DoD database

schemas and implicit ontologies

– Content conversion into DAML+OIL instance data

– Demonstrations of DAML+OIL applications to show “value add” of semantic web technologies to military users

• Development of “HOT DAML” site that helps people understand some of the benefits of the semantic web

Military Equipment Ontology

• Army Military Equipment Characteristic & Performance (C&P) Ontology

• Provides framework to compose Army equipment from the System Unit to individual component (i.e., radio) level

• Ontology is modeled after data model used by WARSIM and that housed by the FDB (Functional Description of the Battlespace)



DAML Query Demonstration

Semantic web DAML demonstration• Uses Call Thesaurus and Military Equipment C&P

ontologies and data to demonstrate the potential of the semantic web

Demonstration is composed of:• Thesaurus Lookup Term• Military Equipment Lookup• Complex query involving “joining” ontologies by using

thesaurus lookup results to find military equipment terms

Sample Intelligence Report Exercise

• Force protection sample force protection intelligence report provided by IMO at last DAML PI meeting

• Intent was to help explain complexities of representing intelligence information using DAML

• DRC developed sample ontology and instance data from the IMO-provided sample

• Results of exercise and a proposed domain-specific markup tool are documented in a white paper for IMO

Hot DAML Work

DAML DINING:

• Intended to demonstrate practical uses of semantic web technology in simple to understand domain

• Example application code shows “semantic join” of hotel postal code from an itinerary file with postal code of stored restaurants



What’s Hot

• Military customer-driven ontologies, artifacts, and application samples being developed

• XML-based technologies (e.g., XSLT) being leveraged to manipulate DAML

• Beginning to evangelize DoD community through presentations and simple demonstrations



What’s Hard

• Reusing existing ontologies

• Performing “semantic joins”

• Developing applications without sufficient DAML-specific tools

• Learning curve for developers (need more samples and training materials)

• Demonstrating semantic web benefits with real applications

• Collaboration with identified application partners
