    DYNAMIC DEMAND

Dynamic demand is a technology thatcan be incorporated into electrical

appliances and light industrial plant whichenables them to provide important servicesto the power grid such as peak loadmanagement and second-to-second

    balancing of supply and demand.

    NECESSITY

Generally the peak load on the grid ocuurs in between

6pm everyday. there are continuous smaller fluctuations whichare essentially random. And there is also always the possibilitythat a sudden large fluctuation could occur at any time if apower line or generating station fails.

For these reasons, the National Grid pays for reservewhich involves certain power plants running at reduced outputso they are able to inject extra power into the grid as it isneeded. The National Grid also has to pay for some of thesegenerators to go into a special "response" mode whereby they

continually change their power output to respond to randomchanges in demand.

These so called "ancillary services" are expensive.Response alone costs in excess of 80m per year and is likelyto increase in price.

    TECHNOLOGY

The process may involve turning down or off certain appliance forthis a grid frequency measuring device is connected to the appliance

    Almost it costs about 5.

For example, heating may be turned down or air conditioning orrefrigeration may be turned up (turning up to a higher temperature usesless electricity), delaying slightly the draw until a peak in usage haspassed

It was recently announced that electric refrigerators will be sold inthe UK fitted with a frequency sensing device which will delay or advancethe cooling cycle based on monitoring grid frequency

    BENEFITS

If dynamic demand control is successful, the benefitscould be considerable:A more efficient power grid.A more stable power grid.

The creation of new sustainable businesses.Significantly reduced carbon-dioxide emissions

from power generation.Removal of some of the barriers to a higher

proportion of renewable energy.A reduction in the cost of renewable energy.

    BUT IT IS CHALLENGE?

Although in theory the technology could earn money fromthe services it provides to power system operators, inpractice this money is not yet accessible

current regulations and institutional policies of Government

are geared towards the traditional ways of providingancillary services, namely through large generators.

Lake of publicity and knowledge over the technology
