[Runaway Country Music Festival Logo - fall 2010]

    RUNAWAYCOUNTRY

Country music always had a strong and fervent following. In the past two years however, country music has hit more mainstream music lines, appealing to a wider audience and transcending traditional country venues. No more does the community need to use tumbleweed, cow skulls, and shotguns to identify their themes. Instead, country graphics have recently drifted towards more clean, modern manifestation, with an emphasis on texture, color, and bold typefaces.

The design uses subtle country and beach imagery to achieve a harmonious balance to convey the festivals goals. Neither the country nor beach is overtly expressed.

The Yeah, Were Excited marketing campaign uses traditional Floridian imagery and adds a country flair. It is a viral marketing strategy, where these icons can be spread around the country and applied to a wide range of marketing materials.

CARs Late Night DeliveryMy contract with the local food service business began with a full rebranding effort, starting with a fresh, modern logo. The website came shortly after. The design uses late-night graphic imagery combined with snide, quirky remarks to develop a personality that appeals to the business main demographic. Menus and other supporting material are still to come.

NATURAL LIGHT MONITERthe light well is designed to flood light through the core interior volumes of the house, thereby minimizing the reliance on artificial light and energy costs.

NATURAL AIR VENTILATIONoperable windows at the upper and lower extents of the service core introduce cool air from below and displace warm air through the thermal chimney above.

SERVICE BAR OPERATIONall service functions [circulation, plumbing, mechanical, and storage] are stacked within the service bar to efficiently organize structural and mechanical framework.

Habitat for Humanity charged a group of elite undergraduate architectural designers to work with visiting professionals from Polshek Partnership Architects to design a sustainable residence within the existing urban context of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

After weeks of design analysis and scrutinizing research, Machine House #1 surfaced as a symbiotic development of the existing industrial presence of Bethlehems historical landmarks and the inevitable leap into the future of sustainable urban design.

The house respects the commonality between the surrounding urban envelope with a modest facade while capitalizing on the sustainable principles of cross-ventilation, natural light reliance, water conservation, green landscaping, mechanical space consolidation, and material selection.

MY RESPONSIBILITIES WITHIN THE TEAM: I participated in all the design decisions that culminated in the finalization of the project. Furthermore, I personally conceptualized, drafted, and illustrated all DIAGRAMMATIC DRAWINGS of the house, and rendered the cartoon ILLUSTRATION PRESENTATION PACKET of the plans, sections, and elevations.

The project was featured at the Allentown Art Museum in Allentown, PA in February 2010 amidst an exhibit showcasing sustainable building in the Lehigh Valley.

  • runwayWRAP

    THE

The Runway Wrap is designed to enhance the users experience and transform the dressing room into a high-fashion runway. Despite the small cellular space, the cover and floor wrap is tapered to create the illusion of depth. The long, thin wood grain accentuates the spaces implied perspective. A small tapered slit above delivers light and defines the central changing zone, further emphasizing its stretched appearance.

Diffuse light is achieved by reflections off the glossy, polished surfaces of the wrap and adjacent walls, thereby reducing harsh shadows that highlight physical imperfections on the user. Warm sources flatters users and accurately depicts colors.

The gallery is designed to showcase the works by Isamu Noguchi. his biomorphic, organic inspirations permeate the museum. While a majority of his work is intended to be placed in outdoor garden settings, indoor galleries provide controlled environments for specific works.

His Japanese-American influence is translated in the buildings orthagonal nature. Black and white give the museum an abstract feel that boldy sets itself apart from the natural backdrop, which in turn sets a stark contrast to the organic sculptures within.

the plans and elevations of the building are delaminated to express its essential essence: the juxtaposition of indoor and outdoor spaces. the layering and stacking of interior space against exterior courtyard play on the natural and organic inspiration for Noguchis work.

    PHASE 1

In the final phase of the process, a building was constructed by abstracting the spacial relationships of the previous phases to generate a program that encouraged a place to exhibit, to exchange, to meet, and to lounge. The resulting STUDENT SYMPOSIUM housed a central core situated at the heart of campus with a series of surrounding rays that stretch the buildings presence to the upper and lower regions of the university.

The process was generated by extracting formal elements from the shadow map and then applying material conditions that perpetuated the juxtaposition of enclosed space in shadow and exposed systems in light.

Meaning butterfly in Japanese, the table is an essay in traditional woodworking and joinery techniques. Delicately refined butterfly details on the surface compliment the monolothic, mechanical structure below.

As part of a long-term contract with Lehighs department of education, this bench is the first in a series of studio furniture pieces designed by students to revamp the departments image. Using mahogany and maple, the bench alters the perception of scale in the space by combining larger-than-life legs, delicate connection details and surface textures, and smaller incarnations of the arm rest and seat back conventions.
