    Introduction 1-1

    1

EMC DiskXtender is a storage management system that providessupport for multiple media types, flexible data organization, andrules-based file migration. The MediaStor component ofDiskXtender is a remote storage solution that provides transparent

hardware control and support for a variety of media and device typesthrough an easy-to-use graphical user interface.

Users on the network may typically save data to a drive on aMicrosoft Windows file server. If EMC DiskXtender File SystemManager is installed on the file server, File System Manager canmigrate files to media in devices attached to a computer whereMediaStor is installed. MediaStor receives requests from File System

Manager for pieces of media in devices and retrieves media within adevice according to those requests.

MediaStor allows you to leverage an existing hardware configurationor create a new one.

You should also refer to the DiskXtender Installation Guide foradditional information on planning a DiskXtender system.

The following sections identify key concepts that are central tounderstanding MediaStor.

    Introduction

The Role of a Media Service in Remote StorageMedia services provide access to media. MediaStor was designed foruse in conjunction with File System Manager, which provides filemigration services. MediaStor provides device management services, passing commands to the robotics within hardware devices on behalfof File System Manager.

For example, a File System Manager computer stores files to media in

an optical library managed by MediaStor. When a File SystemManager computer requests a piece of media so it can write files tothat media or retrieve files from the media, MediaStor sendscommands to the library that cause the picker arm for the library tomove to the shelf where the piece of media is located. The picker armpicks up the piece of media and inserts it in a drive for use by FileSystem Manager.

    MediaStor Concepts 1-3

    Introduction

You can use several hardware configurations with MediaStor, creating a storage system suited to your needs and availableresources. You can install MediaStor on the same computer as FileSystem Manager or on a separate computer. In addition, a MediaStorsystem can manage devices on behalf of multiple File SystemManager services (computers).

MediaStor ConceptsThe following concepts are integral to understanding MediaStor:

    Storage Devices on page 1-3

    Media Types on page 1-4

    System Management on page 1-6

Storage Devices Storage devices are hardware devices that allow you to accessmultiple pieces of high-capacity removable storage media. Adding anew piece of media can always increase the total storage capacityavailable through a storage device. Use of a storage device throughMediaStor provides you with practically unlimited storage space.

The term device refers to hardware and is used throughout this guide todescribe towers, standalone drives, and library systems.

MediaStor can manage one or many standalone drives, towers, andlibrary devices (system bus resources). For more information, refer tothe following sections:

    Library on page 1-3

    Standalone Drive on page 1-4

    Tower on page 1-4

Library Sometimes referred to as autochangers or jukeboxes, libraries haveshelves for storing media, one or more drives, and a robotic (orpicker) arm that can be controlled using software to mount anddismount media. MediaStor manages library devices and handlesmounting and dismounting of requested media automatically, transparent to the client application. For more information on addingand managing libraries in MediaStor, see Libraries on page 3-3 .

    1-4 DiskXtender MediaStor Administrators Guide

    Introduction

Standalone Drive Standalone drives (internal or external) are non-library drive devicesmanaged by you and MediaStor. You are responsible for mountingand dismounting media in standalone drive devices, and MediaStorand the File System Manager computers it services automaticallymanage the media after the media is in the drive.

When using standalone drives, you receive an error when youattempt to access data files on offline media. The MediaStor alertviewer tells you what media to mount, and, after the media has beenmounted, you can retry the request and retrieve the file.

For more information on managing standalone drives, see StandaloneDrives on page 3-33.

Tower A tower is a case containing several standalone drives . You andMediaStor manage tower devices. You are responsible for mountingand dismounting media in tower drive devices, and MediaStormanages the media after the media is in the drives.

When using tower drives, you receive an error when you attempt toaccess data files on offline media. The MediaStor alert viewer tellsyou what media to mount, and, after the media has been mounted, you can retry the request and retrieve the file.

For more information on managing towers, see Towers on page 3-26 .

Media Types MediaStor supports many high-capacity storage media types. Thefunctionality accessible through a device depends on the type ofmedia used in the device and the file system for which the media isformatted.

The following table defines all media types and file systems thatMediaStor currently supports:

    MediaStor Concepts 1-5

    Introduction

After you configure a MediaStor media service and create anextended drive in File System Manager, you can allocate media tothat extended drive through MediaStor or through File SystemManager. Allocating media to a File System Manager extended drivemakes the media available to the File System Manager service so thatyou can begin migrating files to and reading files from that piece ofmedia.

For more information on managing media, including allocatingmedia and viewing media properties, see Chapter 4, ManagingStorage Media.

For detailed descriptions of media types and file systems, and theadvantages and limitations of certain file systems with media, refer tothe Planning Your DiskXtender System chapter of the DiskXtenderInstallation Guide.

The Tree View The left pane of the Administrator window contains a tree showing

all hardware configured for registered MediaStor computers.Commands for managing MediaStor functionality can be accessedfrom the tree. When you right-click a tree node, a shortcut menucontaining commands for performing MediaStor functions appears. The shortcut menu items vary depending on what item you select inthe tree view.

Each node in the tree indicates whether it is expandable; that is,

whether it contains items beneath it. A plus sign (+) marks a nodethat is expandable, and a minus sign (-), marks a node that iscollapsible. You can expand and collapse a node by eitherdouble-clicking the node or clicking the plus (+) or minus (-) sign tothe left of the node.

If a node appears with neither sign, that means it currently containsno items within it. For example, if the Blank node of the Available

media tree does not have a plus (+) or minus (-) sign in front of it,there are no blank media available for that extended drive.

A Hardware node, Scratch Pool node, and Application Pools nodeappear underneath each root node for a MediaStor computer. Formore information, see the following sections:

    Hardware on page 2-4

    CAUTION

While MediaStor is running and SCSI devices are in use or beingconfigured, do not run any other applications that access thedevices. Two different applications sending SCSI commands to thesame device may cause commands to fail and may cause damage tothe hardware. For example, do not run SCSI Manager whileconfiguring hardware.

Media PoolsThe MediaStor Administrator lists two media pool trees in the treeview: Scratch Pool and Application Pools. The Scratch Pool treecontains all media in the MediaStor system that is not currentlyassigned to an application. The Application Pools tree displays allextended drives configured for each File System Manager computercurrently using MediaStor as a media service.

Each application media pool is identified by three characteristics: theapplication using MediaStor as a media service, the name of thecomputer where the application is installed, and the extended driveletter.

For example, the name of an application media pool as it appears inthe Application Pools tree might be DX_SERVER1_D . In this example, the File System Manager computer using MediaStor is identified asDX, the name of the computer running File System Manager isSERVER1 , and the D drive has been configured as a File System

Manager extended drive. This naming convention allows you toquickly identify where you should assign the media from the ScratchPool, if you choose to allocate the media through MediaStor. Mediacan also be allocated through File System Manager.

Copy Media that are being used as copies of Original media. The only differencebetween an Original piece of media and its copy is the serial number foreach piece of media.

Duplicate Any media with the same serial number as another piece of media. Youcannot use Duplicate media with MediaStor; you mustreformat the media (ifthe media allows it) to assign a different serial number to it.

Blank Media that you have formatted for use but not yet labeled. Through FileSystem Manager, you can label or reformat Blank media, or label it for useas a copy (if the media allows it).

Foreign Media that have been formatted for a file system that is not supported for thatmedia type. You can format Foreign media with a supported file system (ifMediaStor supports the type of media).

Unknown Media that MediaStor does not recognize. The problem could be anunsupported media type or an unsupported file system.

Unformatted Media that you unpackaged and placed in the device but that you have notyet formatted for the first time. You must format Unformatted media to makeit Blank media, or format and label it to make it Original media.

Corrupt UDF media that the system recognizes but cannot use because of problemswith the media itself. Media corruption most often occurs as a result of apower failure while files are being written to the media. Performing aCheckDisk media taskon the media (through File System Manager) may allow youto find and repair the errors.

Device NamesWhen you add a device to MediaStor, you may need to select it froma list of available devices. MediaStor uses standardized namingconventions for hardware devices. Understanding the format for adevice name simplifies identification of the device in MediaStor.

MediaStor supports standalone drives , towers , and SCSI and seriallibraries . When SCSI devices are added and configured in MediaStor, the supported devices listed in the Windows registry areautomatically listed for use in MediaStor. These devices appear inorder according to their model and their device address. SCSI andserial addresses are displayed differently and are configured usingdifferent methods. For more information, see the following sections:

SCSI Device Names on page 3-2

Serial Library Device Names on page 3-2

SCSI Device Names The SCSI address is the same as the character string that names thisdevice in SCSI Manager. Look at the icon for this device in SCSIManager; its device name (address) is shown in quotes under theicon. For more information on SCSI Manager, see Using SCSI Manager on page A-1.

The numbers in the device address represent the SCSI port, bus, target ID, and logical unit ID, respectively. For example, on a typicalsystem with one host adapter, a CD-ROM drive at target ID 2 would be SCSI.0.0.2.0. The first zero (0) in the address is the SCSI port, thesecond zero is the bus, the two (2) is the target ID, and the third andfinal zero is the logical unit ID.

    Serial Library DeviceNames

If a library with serial robotics is used, the serial port designation andthe robotics controller ID must be provided. For example, the addressfor a serial library with one drive attached could be COM1-0. COM1designates the MediaStor computer COM port to which the library isconnected; 0 designates the RS-232 ID for the robotics controller. Upto 15 devices may be daisy-chained on a serial port.

For more information on how to identify the RS-232 for a library, refer to themanufacturer documentation.

If the library is a MO/UDO library that contains both MO andUDO drives, remember that selecting UDO allows you to add both MO and UDO drives to the configuration. Selecting MOrestricts you to only adding MO drives to the libraryconfiguration.

Library Information page appears. For instructions, see The SerialLibrary Information Page on page 3-8 . Or, if you are configuring aSCSI library, the Library Drives page appears. For instructions, see The Library Drives Page on page 3-9.

Choosing a Drive TypeWhen selecting the drive type for a library, be advised that the librarytype controls the functionality of both the drives and the media in thelibrary. This pertains specifically to DVD libraries where differenttypes of DVD drives may be installed, and to MO/UDO libraries.

As long as the drives in the library are the same type as the selecteddrive type, they function as read/write drives. If a drive in the libraryis of a different type (though still compatible with the library), thedrive functions as a read-only drive. If the library contains combodrives, these drives are set to the selected drive type selected for thelibrary.

If you are using DVD-R media and plan to have copies of that media in theDiskXtender system, keep in mind that unfinalized media cannot bemounted in a read-only drive, and therefore if you plan to update copies ofunfinalized DVD-R media, you need to have at least two "write" drives forDVD-R media (one for the unfinalized original and one for the copy).

In addition, DVD media in the library that is not of the same type asthe drive type selected for the library (as long as it is compatible withthe drive, which can occur if you are using a combo drive) is set to beread-only media during library inventory. For example, if you haveDVD-RAM media in the library, but select DVD-R as the drive typefor the library, all DVD-RAM media is set as read-only media. Thesame is true for DVD-R media in a DVD-RAM drive-type library.

For DVD libraries containing combination drives and/or different

drive types, all media must be readable in all library drives. Forexample, if a library contains both DVD-R and DVD-ROM drives,

    3Managing Hardware

you cannot insert DVD RAM media into the library because

  • 8/10/2019 DXWin_MSAdminGuidev60

    50/202

    3-8 DiskXtender MediaStor Administrators Guide

you cannot insert DVD-RAM media into the library becauseDVD-RAM media is not readable in DVD-ROM drives. In addition,

all read/write library media must be both readable and writable in allread/write library drives.

If you are configuring a read-only drive and a write drive in the same library, the two drives should be on separate buses. As always, you should follow allmanufacturers recommendations for setting up hardware devices beforeadding them to MediaStor.

For UDO libraries, you can install both UDO and MO drives in thelibrary; however, MO drives can read/write to only MO media, andUDO drives can read/write to only UDO media. They are notinterchangeable due to the differing sector sizes of the media.

In addition, if you select UDO as the library type, you can select bothUDO and MO drives during library configuration, meaning that bothUDO and MO media can be used in the library. If you select MO asthe library type for that same library (a UDO library with both MOand UDO drives physically installed), however, you can only selectMO drives during library configuration, and only use MO media inthe library (regardless of the type of drives actually resident in thelibrary).

To add drives for the library:

    1. You have the following choices:

Automatic configuration If you are adding a SCSI library,

add and configure the drives automatically. Automaticconfiguration automatically adds all the drives in a SCSIlibrary and orders the drives as they exist in the library, withtheir corresponding SCSI ID, which is usually, but notnecessarily, in order of lowest to highest.

Automatic configuration is not supported for serial libraries. Inaddition, if the library and drive are not on the same bus, automatic

configuration fails. You must add the drives manually.

showing all drives currently listed in the Windows registrythat are compatible with the drive type selected for thelibrary (either as read/write or read-only drives), includingstandalone drives.

    b. Select the drives you want to add and then click OK. Besure to only select actual library drives. While the systemallows you to select standalone or external drives from thiswindow, the configuration test run afterwards fails.

When manually adding drives, you must add them in the order of thedrive number and not the SCSI ID. For example, if drive 1 has SCSIID 1050 and drive 2 has SCSI ID 1040, the SCSI addresses of the drivesdo not appear in ascending order; SCSI ID 1050 (drive 1) appears

before SCSI ID 1040 (drive 2). In the Drives list box 1040 (drive 2) still

    appears first.

    2. If you choose to add only some of the drives in a library, addreserved drives as placeholders for the drives that are not added. This is particularly important if the library contains drives thatare not compatible with the drive type selected for the library, andtherefore cannot be added to the configuration.

Some libraries are configured in a way that there are physically twodrives, but the library firmware expects four drives. When automaticconfiguration is run, reserved drives are added for those bays in thelibrary where the drives are missing.

The total number of drives, actual and reserved, listed in theLibrary Drives page must equal the total number of drives inthe library.

    3. If you added drives manually, be sure that the library drives, including reserved drives, are defined in the order that thevendor numbers its drive elements. For example, if you have alibrary with four drives and you are not using the third drive inthe library, the reserved drive must appear in place of the thirddrive in the list.To change the order of a library drive, select the drive and thenuse the up and down arrows to the right of the Drives list topromote or demote the position of the drive in the list.

    4. Choose whether to set each drive online when the library comesonline by selecting the drive and then selecting or clearing the Setdrive online when library is set online checkbox. (At least onedrive must be configured to be set online when the library is setonline. Otherwise, the library remains offline.)

    5. If you added a drive you do not want to use, delete the drive byselecting the drive and then clicking Delete.

Library procedures differ by model. For example, some libraries havea mailslot into which media is placed before it is put on a shelf ormounted in a drive. Some libraries use magazines that hold severalpieces of media, so that when a magazine is removed, multiple pieces

of media are removed as well. Libraries using magazines must betaken offline before you eject the magazine. After you re-insert themagazine, you can set the library online and it can be inventoried.Always be sure to inventory those shelves where the media status haschanged, even if youve switched media on two different shelves.

For instructions on setting libraries online and offline, see Setting aLibrary Offline on page 3-23 and Setting a Library Online on page 3-24.

Quick access to all aspects of library media management is availablethrough the Manage Media feature. Depending on the limitations ofthe library, you may be able to insert, move, and eject media usingthis dialog box. You can also monitor media status.

To manage library media, right-click the library in the Hardware treeand select Manage Media from the shortcut menu. The ManageLibrary Media dialog box appears.
