Documentary Anyone who becomes a fireman opts for a job that is subject to extreme physical and psychological stress, and the men and women at Hamburg’s Berliner Tor fire station are routinely pushed to the limit. The filmmakers spent a year with them on their 24-hour shifts. Frank Scheffler, the senior manager of the station, says: "We see the city’s misfortune and suffering up close." When they’re on call, he and his 30 colleagues in the Berliner Tor fire station near Hamburg’s central train station work day and night, in 24-hour shifts. We filmed them on the job: they don’t just put out fires, they also clean up crime scenes and act as paramedics for accidents, the sick, the homeless and the addicted. The fire fighters’ psychological and physical resilience is put to the test every day and long nights, when their work brings them into contact with all social classes and the fringes of human existence.

Documentary Since the lifting of sanctions in January 2016, Iran has re-entered the international trade arena after more than a decade of isolation because of its nuclear policies. For Iranians, it’s a long-awaited moment, because the country’s infrastructure is outdated and consumer goods are in short supply. But could economic liberalization also lead to social change? Reporter Beate Haselmayer covers her hair with a dark cloth – the Iranian version of the traditional hijab – and set off around the Islamic theocracy. In Tehran she visits an Austrian tour operator who is married to an Iranian and tells her what work and personal life is like

under the Mullahs. She meets Iranian musicians who dream of a solo career denied to them at home. She also comes across Western businesspeople who are hoping to land lucrative deals: with 80 million inhabitants, Iran is a huge potential market. And she asks people in the street what they expect from the end of sanctions and how they see their country, where human rights violations are still commonplace.

In the 19th century the British built a railway in what was then their colony of Ceylon. Their idea was to transport goods such as tea from the highlands to the port of Colombo. Today it’s mainly only locals and tourists who use the so-called "Main Line." The route is considered one of the most picturesque in the whole of Asia. Our trip takes us from the capital, Colombo, to Ella in the highlands. Our first stop is one of the country’s largest elephant orphanages. And then on to Kandy, the former capital of the Singhalese kingdom. The city is home to the famous Temple of the Tooth, which is said to house the Buddha’s top left canine. The train then winds its way further up into the highlands. We watch tea pickers at work and go to a tea factory to discover where the aroma comes from. Nuwara Eliya is Sri Lanka’s highest town at an altitude of almost 1900 meters, where a racecourse still brings the colonial era back to life. The stations have also retained their own colonial charm: in 1901, a signaling system was set up to make the long journey safer. And those suffering from the altitude can catch their breath at the final stop, the spa in Ella.

Documentary 19:00 DW News 19:15 The German Saga – Who We Are

Documentary Do "German virtues" such as punctuality, order and diligence shape the image of the Germans or has it more to do with things such as supper or the Kehrwoche? Why did respondents from 25 nations name Germany "the most popular country in the world" in a 2013 poll? And in spite of that, why are Germans frequently caricatured as aggressors with Hitler mustaches? When he asks about the way Germans see themselves and others, historian Christopher Clark comes across many amusing and sometimes contradictory results, but also stereotypes with historical roots. For example, the oft-cited "German Angst" is often ridiculed abroad as mere gloominess. But psychologists see its causes in the armed conflicts that have shaped our history – from the Thirty Years' until the Second World War. Ever since the 2006 World Cup, international view of the "unpredictable Germans" has softened considerably. The Germans showed themselves to be open and in a party mood. Today’s Germans just want to live in harmony with their neighbors, not be over or under other nations," Clark's concludes.

Belém – Monuments of Former Colonial Power, Portugal In the late Middle Ages, Portuguese seafarers pushed beyond the limits of the known world. Belém, one of Lisbon’s oldest suburbs, was their home port. In 1516, the Torre de Belém was erected at the mouth of the Tejos River, and one year later, construction began on the monastery. Originally, the tower of Belém, now left high on dry land, served as a fortress and lighthouse. The monastery houses the tombs of Vasco de Gama and Luís Vaz de Camões, author of the Luisades, Portugal’s national epic. Both structures date from the era when Portugal was one of Europe’s major powers.

Documentary Benjamin Ferencz is the last surviving chief prosecutor from the Nuremberg Trials. He came to Germany as a young American soldier and lawyer immediately after the liberation of the concentration camps, to secure documents on the crimes committed there. In doing so, he came upon detailed files of the so-called "Einsatzgruppen", or "task forces," essentially death squads, and thus became chief prosecutor at one of the subsequent Nuremberg trials of 24 SS commanders. A Harvard graduate, he devoted his further life to the idea of an international criminal court, which he had already demanded in Nuremberg. In 2002 the idea finally became reality, with the establishment of the International Criminal Court in The Hague. In this documentary, with precise analysis, Ferencz presents the history of a century that ushered humanity into the greatest disasters, but also the boldest hopes for a more just world. Director Ullabritt Horn accompanies her energetic and life-loving protagonist to appearances in Washington, New York City, Frankfurt and Nuremberg, and also interviews his colleagues and friends.

Documentary Some call it a useful dowry of evolution, others a fault in the human genetic make-up: The old mortal sin Greed seems to be more ubiquitous than ever. Why cannot people ever get enough, where is this self-indulgence leading – and are there any ways out of this vicious circle of gratification? "People like to have a lot of stuff because it makes them the feeling of living forever," says American social psychologist Sheldon Solomon, who believes today's materialism and consumerism are will have disastrous consequences. Anyone who fails to satisfy his or her desires in this age of the Ego is deemed a loser. But with more than 7 billion people on the Earth, the ramifications of this excessive consumption of resources are already clear. Isn’t the deplorable state of our planet proof enough that "The Greed Program," which has made us crave possessions, status and power, is coming to an end? Or is the frenzied search for more and more still an indispensable part of our nature? We set off to look for the essence of greed. And we tell the stories of people who – whether as perpetrators or victims or even just as willing consumers – have become accomplices in a sea change in values.

Documentary Digital whistleblowers are the freedom fighters of the information age. Their firm belief in transparency and the protection of personal privacy unites activists across the political spectrum: from republican libertarians to radical anarchists and cyber hippies. Viewed by many as heroes, their critics however, are just as vehement when it comes to pointing out the potential or real threat they pose to our national security. Digital dissidents – are they what they claim to be, or are they just plain paranoid? Is what they do legitimate? Are whistleblowers such as ex-NSA senior executives Thomas Drake and Bill Binney heroes or traitors? What about United States military analyst Daniel Ellsberg, regarded by many, since the release of the Pentagon Papers into the public domain, as the whistleblower par excellence? Then there is British MI5 operative Annie Machon. For years these individuals worked as part of the system before going rogue and divulging what they knew. Wiki-leaks founder Julian Assange attacked the system from without, making secrets public including information covering US war crimes committed in Iraq. The documentary reveals the various motives behind being a whistleblower or a hacker, the contradictions and the consequences of their actions.

Faithless 19:00 DW News 19:15 2 + 4 + X – A Short History of German Reunification

Documentary

DW | SUN 2016-10-02 8/96

Barely 327 days lay between the fall of the Berlin Wall and German reunification on October 3, 1990. What many now take for granted was more exciting than any thriller when it was actually happening. The reunification of Germany was certainly not a foregone conclusion. The GDR had imploded and Chancellor Helmut Kohl took advantage of the situation with a 10-point program. The two German states negotiated the merger of East and West Germany with the four victorious powers of World War II – The United States, the Soviet Union, Great Britain and France. The result was the so-called “2 + 4 Treaty” that regulated the whole reunification process. Our documentary looks at the most important events. Prominent politicians such as the last East German foreign minister, Markus Meckel, Helmut Kohl's advisor Horst Teltschik and Élisabeth Guigou, Francois Mitterrand's advisor, talk about the events they experienced and helped to shape at first hand. Renowned international historians and journalists also give a comprehensive picture of a tumultuous time. And documents from British archives show how great the fear of a resurgent Germany really was.

Documentary One of the tangible effects of climate change in central Europe will be the increasing frequency of extreme weather events. Long periods of heat, devastating storms and flooding are just three examples. Confronting them poses a big challenge for society and scientists. So what impact will it have on our lives when extreme weather becomes the norm? How well prepared are we? Summer 2003: Western Europe experienced a powerful heat wave. Around 70,000 people died, 7,000 of them in Germany and 15,000 in France. A taste of things to come. At the same time, the "once-in-a-century" floods of recent years suggest a potential trend: particular weather factors could cause more frequent flooding. "Extreme Weather in Europe" presents what scientists know about weather trends and what governments, authorities, municipalities and aid organizations are doing to adjust and prepare. Farmers in Brandenburg are improving their dry soils by under sowing and planting crops less susceptible to dry conditions. Flood protection measures are being overhauled on the Oder and Elbe rivers as well as along the North Sea coast. Scientists in Toulouse are working on prediction models designed to lessen the impacts of storms.

Spissky Hrad – A Fortress at the Crossroads of Cultures, Slovak Republic In the background the snow-clad peaks of the High Tatra, in front of them the lush green of the foothills. Vast fields, endless forests, and crystal-clear rivers: that is the scenery of the Zips. This region in eastern Slovakia is slightly reminiscent of Switzerland. Its inhabitants talk of their "treasure house" as a magnificent part of Creation. Accordingly, they refer to it as "Paradise". The beauty of the countryside attracted many peoples: Celts, Slavs, Jews, Roma, Germans, Hungarians, and Ukrainians. This region is a crossroads of cultures and faiths. Together with Protestants and Jews, Orthodox, Roman and Greek Catholics created a multi-ethnic culture in the heart of Europe: the Spiss. And in the middle of it – majestic, proud, and as white as the Travertin stone – lies Spissky Hrad, one of the mightiest fortresses on the European continent. Early romanesque, mediaeval Renaissance, and baroque elements merge to form a stupendous monument which, as mysterious as it is majestic, has guarded the surrounding region since the 12th century. On the hill opposite stands the fortified bishopric and next to it the Chapel of Zehra. They strengthen each other and, just as they did against the Turks and the Tatars, they defend their culture: the Slovak "Paradise".

Documentary The far eastern part of Siberia is a huge area, but so remote that even its name is questionable: should it be called Siberia, Manchuria or Heilongjiang, in Russian or in Chinese? The border between Russia and China is marked by the River Amur, called Heilongjiang by the Chinese – Black Dragon River. More and more Chinese are crossing the Amur to settle in Siberia. In the 16th Century the area was under Chinese rule. In the 19th Century, eastern Siberia was part of Russia. Today it’s once again becoming a pawn in the geopolitical interests of Putin’s Russia and Xi Jinping’s China. The need for land for the 150 million Chinese in the region is vast: China has ten times the population of Russia but only possesses 7% of the world’s agricultural land, whereas Russia possesses 11%. The demographic pressure in China and the sparse population on the Russian side mean that the border is de facto moving northwards. China cares about agricultural land and energy, Russia about clearly defined borders. Using selected archive footage and expert opinions, this documentary illuminates the geopolitical background and potential for conflict between the two superpowers.

The Cliff Temples of Abu Simbel, Egypt The rock temples of Abu Simbel on the western bank of the Nile were built during the reign of the Pharaoh Ramses II, although "built” is perhaps not the right word, because the workers carved the temple directly into the limestone, penetrating as much as 60 meters deep into the mountain. The lack of oxygen and the dim light from the oil lamps made it difficult to work, but that did not stop the builders from clearing thousands of tons of rock, carving out huge pillars and coloring hundreds of square meters. Pharaoh Ramses II ruled from 1279 to 1213 BC. During his long reign, he created many buildings, all of them characterized by their monumental size. Today's episode takes us to the Ramesseum in Thebes and the Temple of Amun in Luxor.

And we tell the stories of people who – whether as perpetrators or victims or even just as willing consumers – have become accomplices in a sea change in values.

artist since the Iranian revolution to show his works in Tehran. His more recent work was created after a visit to the Iranian city of Shiraz. Günther Uecker's work is rich, lively and varied, ranging from his "Terror Orchestra" – a homage to the American composer John Cage – to kinetic light art, and from meditative sand spirals to political manifestoes. Moving between worlds with his message of peace, he sets out to vanquish fear and make clear statements on issues where language has otherwise failed: positing human rights against the obdurate cultural bureaucracy in China, for example, or conjuring up his "Ash Pictures” in response to the Chernobyl disaster. Uecker was born in1930 in Pomerania. After the uprising of 17 June 1953, he escaped from East Germany and went to the Rhineland, where he still lives. He became one of the pioneers of the West German postwar avant-garde and from 1961 was part "Zero," a group that aimed at a completely fresh start in the arts. He has constantly sought contact with other cultures and traveled to crisis regions, and has shown his works in dictatorships and totalitarian states.

Every year on the anniversary of his death, large numbers of pilgrims come to Cirrientes for a mixture of cult, campsite and festival. In contrast to all this is Pope Francis himself. "Apart from the periods when we were under dictatorships, Argentina has always been a country of open borders," says Marcelo Huernos, curator of the museum in the former Immigrants’ Hotel in Buenos Aires. Michael Wollny-Trio 02:00 DW News 02:03 The Day – News in Review 02:30 A Man, a Dog and a Pickup Truck – In Search of America, Part 1

Documentary The actor August Zirner travels across the United States with his dog Betsy. In the footsteps of Nobel Laureate John Steinbeck, he goes in search of the soul of America. As an American who has lived in Europe for 40 years, he is a stranger in his own country. Zirner meets the widest variety of people and asks them all the same question: What is America today? In the first episode of the four-part series, Zirner and Betsy begin their journey in New York City. The city is still a magnet for millions of people around the world. The Statue of Liberty is a stark reminder that, by 1954, twelve million people had disembarked on Ellis Island and been allowed into the country of the "American Dream." In his book "Travels with Charley," John Steinbeck propounded the theory that Americans are essentially restless, descendants of wanderers who weren’t content to stay at home but wanted to discover a new continent. However, the European refugee crisis is pushing the gates to the USA shut. Has America lost sight of its history as a country founded on immigration? In and around New York, Zirner talks to ordinary people as well as experts and a folk musician about Steinbeck, America as a country of immigration, and the differences between town and country.

Things are changing fast, especially due to the number of Latinos – now the country's largest minority – and the proximity to the Mexican border. Latinos are also having an effect on the country’s political culture. An overwhelming majority of Latinos voted for President Obama in 2012 and so helped him to his second term. How will they affect the presidential election in 2016? Will their votes decide the fight for the White House?

Documentary 19:00 DW News 19:15 91%: A Film About Guns in America – Documentary

Weapons are a fact of life in America: firearms kill almost 90 people every day. You can even buy weapons in the supermarket, and even civilians can buy assault rifles. The gun lobby and its opponents have been arguing for years about whether stricter gun ownership laws are needed. Anti-gun campaigners are sure: Stricter laws save lives. But is the solution really that simple? Anyone who wants a firearm can buy one in the United States with almost no problem. America's 325 million inhabitants possess an estimated 347 million firearms. They represent one of the greatest risks to health and life. A survey carried out in 2013 showed that 91 percent of Americans are in favor of extensive background checks for anyone wanting to buy weapons, and supporters of checks believe that they could save thousands of lives. But few Americans actually question the constitutional amendment guaranteeing every citizen the right to carry a weapon. Our film talks to victims and their relatives and hears about the human tragedies caused by the widespread possession of guns as well as the hopeless fight against the powerful gun lobby by its opponents. More stringent laws constantly fail to make the statute books. Is there any solution that could put an end to the unnecessary deaths?

100 million records sold, 5,000 concerts in over 80 countries and countless hits – the Scorpions from Hanover are one of the most successful rock bands in music history. In 2010, they announced they were calling it a day – one final three-year tour and then stop. But things happened differently after all! "Forever and a Day" tells the story of a band that can’t stop living the dream. Director Katja von Garnier accompanied the five musicians on their tour around the world: Bangkok, Beirut, Berlin, Budapest, Moscow, Paris and Los Angeles are the most important stages in the film, which also charts the history of the band. Archive footage recreates defining moments from five decades ago. Singer Klaus Meine and guitarists Rudolf Schenker and Matthias Jabs remember the highs and lows of their careers. And companions, admirers and friends talk about the "Scorpions" phenomenon.

How reputable is this industry? The business in self-optimization is booming, but it’s expensive and not yet clear whether it really helps. Scientifically evaluating it is difficult. This documentary casts a critical eye on the industry and asks what providers and associations have to say about the lack of independent quality control. There are currently 8,000 coaches working in Germany, putting it in third place internationally after the United States and Britain. The industry in Germany has an annual turnover of 450 million euros.

The giant companies Amazon and Apple have created monopolies in the book market that have rapidly turned the cultural world on its head. With their e-books, they can even monitor users’ reading behavior in real time. But "analog’" resistance is stirring. Will the book survive? And if so, in what format? What’s the future of the book – now that everything’s different, especially since online retailers like Amazon have got into the market, demanding special conditions from publishers and encouraging authors to self-publish on their own online platform – at the expense of publishing houses and local bookshops in particular. Is the traditional bookselling business model an anachronism without a future – particularly since texts are becoming more and more popular as e-books, regardless of whether they’re textbooks, novels or essays, making booksellers and publishers basically superfluous. But the book in its traditional form is a democratic instrument. Once it’s been published, it cannot be manipulated and its reader cannot be monitored by a downloading platform – by the NSA, for example.

21:15 Treasures of the World – Heritage of Mankind Thebes – The City of Amon, Egypt For four centuries, the royal city of Thebes on the east bank of the Nile ruled Egypt and was for a time the center of the eastern Mediterranean. It had its heyday as capital of the New Kingdom during the 18th Dynasty, when the pharaohs used their vast wealth to glorify their royal seat. With its "hundred gates,” Thebes was so big that today’s Luxor, Karnak and their surrounding villages can all still fit into its original area. The capital of Upper Egypt was already ancient in the reign of Ramses II around 1280 BC, but it was built from dried mud bricks, which meant it was always in a state of flux. Today only the stone temples remain: The Luxor Temple and the huge temple complex of Karnak with its Temple of Amun, the largest religious building in the world. Besides a multitude of reliefs, the Luxor Temple, which is connected to Karnak by a three-kilometer-long avenue, also contains huge statues of Ramses II, who erected more monuments in Thebes than any other ruler. The pharaohs of the New Kingdom, including the greatest of them all, Ramses II, found their last resting place in the necropolis to the west of the Nile.

Documentary Hundreds of thousands of people are fleeing to Germany. Their numbers are steadily rising and their stories of flight are dramatic, unique and shocking – and are now being filmed directly on mobile phone. And not by filmmakers or news teams, but by the refugees themselves. #MyEscape collects many of these stories. For most refugees, a mobile phone is an essential tool for organizing a way out. But it’s also a way of carrying memories of those left behind and recording the stages of their escape. Countless videos are circulating on social media which document the refugees’ journey to Germany. The clips tell of the refugees’ homes, their departure, the different legs of their journey, their arrival in Germany and, finally, their first impressions in the new country. The refugees narrate their footage with detailed interviews, giving a moving and close-up impression of the people, the homes they had to leave and the journey they still face in their search for security.

This time, August and Betsy go to Washington, D.C. The capital is the heart of American power. Does America interfere too much in the affairs of the rest of the world? Is it unreasonable in its attempts to impose its values on other countries? John Steinbeck was already posing these questions in his book "Travels with Charley,” but today they are more relevant than ever. August’s old schoolmate Andrew lives here. He’s a police officer, and the fact that he has shot a man dead prompts Zirner to ask another question: Why do Americans want to arm themselves? Is it because of their history as settlers and conquerors? Who steers public opinion thoughts and the law? Lobbyists, politicians – or maybe the voters after all? An arms dealer tries to explain. With these thoughts, August and Betsy continue their journey through the huge country.

Documentary 19:00 DW News 19:15 Today's Deadly Droughts – High-tech low-tech Solutions

Documentary Combating desertification and the threat of famine is one of the great challenges of our time. About 40 percent of the world’s land surface are drylands. Scientists estimate that heat extremes in many regions of the world will continue to increase due to climate change. The UN estimates that by 2020 in Africa alone up to 220 million more people will be suffering from water scarcity than today, leading to famines and floods of refugees. Worldwide, more than 1.5 billion people are at risk of water scarcity. Our film shows what researchers, companies and nonprofit organizations are doing to use scarce water resources effectively and ensure people have enough food. In California, they are using high-tech to fight against the worst drought for centuries. In southern Spain, Europe's largest vegetable growing area, technology is helping to conserve dwindling freshwater resources. This is in contrast with poor countries like Burkina Faso. They are the most affected by climate change but don’t have the money or infrastructure to take advantage of modern technology. They are mainly fighting for survival with hoes and brawn.

In January 1943, the Allies were planning the invasion of Sicily. The British and Americans wanted to destroy the bases of the Axis powers and gain control of the Mediterranean. They decided to use a specially doctored corpse to fool the Germans. "Operation Mincemeat" was one of the most influential acts of deception in WWII. British Intelligence set out to make the corpse look like that of a British secret courier. The Mediterranean was supposed to wash the dead man ashore with false papers. The contents of the documents were explosive: plans for the Allied invasion of Sardinia and the Balkans. They wanted it to end up on Hitler’s desk. For months, the British worked on the plan, carefully constructing an identity and backstory for the bogus naval officer. On April 17, the corpse was dropped into the sea. After weeks of waiting, the message finally came: "Mincemeat swallowed whole.” The Germans had taken the bait and moved their troops from Sicily to the Balkans. By carrying fake orders to the Germans, the anonymous dead man saved thousands of lives and shortened the course of World War II.

St. Petersburg – The Venice of the North, Russia With its baroque-classical center, St. Petersburg is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Hardly any other city has been described by so many poets as the "Venice of the North." This, for example, is where Pushkin, Gogol, Dostoevsky, Mayakovsky and Anna Akhmatova all lived. Composers such as Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov and Shostakovich and many famous sculptors and painters also played a role in shaping the face of this city. Founded by Tsar Peter the Great in 1703, St. Petersburg was the capital of the Russian Empire from 1712 to 1728 and then again from 1732 to 1918. During World War II, the city (then called Leningrad) survived a 900-day siege by German forces. Our film was shot during the famous "White Nights," when the magic of this city built on twelve islands is especially powerful.

A trip through Bolivia is breathtaking – literally and figuratively. There are the breathtaking pictures of landscapes that could not be more beautiful. And it’s literally breathtaking because a large percentage of the country is more than 4,000 meters above sea level, an altitude reached by just a few mountain peaks in Europe. It takes a little bit of time to discover Bolivia – and the railway is a great way to reach its most beautiful parts. We take the train from Quijarro on the border with Brazil through the rainforests and savannah to Bolivia’s supply center, Santa Cruz. We look for evidence of the Catholic mission in San José and the ancient but surviving traditions of the Inca in the Samaipatha World Heritage Site and on the Isla del Sol on Lake Titicaca. The celebrations for Todos Santos, All Saints, in Pulacayo are colorful and joyous. This place is also home to the world’s second-largest silver mine, above Uyuni. The spirit of the American train robbers Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid comes to life here, along one of South America’s most beautiful stretches of railway, between Tupiza and Villazon.

Santo Domingo – City of Christopher Columbus, Dominican Republic

DW | WED 2016-10-19 60/96

On Easter Sunday 1492, Christopher Columbus landed on a Caribbean island in his ship “Santo Domingo.” He named the island Hispaniola – "Little Spain” – and it became the center of the early Spanish Caribbean. Four years later, Bartholomew Columbus, Christopher’s brother, founded what is now the capital of the Dominican Republic on the bluffs of the Ozama River – the oldest city founded by Europeans on American soil. The Cathedral of Santo Domingo, the Alcázar de Colón castle, the royal residences, the churches and the many monasteries as well as the fortifications and the first government buildings are all well preserved even now, making Santo Domingo a great example of a 16th Century Spanish city in the New World. Our film tells the story of the city from the perspective of Christopher Columbus himself. What would he think of it now?

Paolo Nutini 02:00 DW News 02:03 The Day – News in Review 02:30 A Man, a Dog and a Pickup Truck – In Search of America, Part 3

The third part of our series takes us to the Deep South. In 1960, John Steinbeck was stunned by the racism of his countrymen. That might have been a long time ago, but has everything really changed for the better? America might have elected its first black president but, in Atlanta, August Zirner finds that a lot has only changed on the surface, although he also meets optimists and activists who look hopefully to the future. Atlanta is at its best when August takes the stage in a former speakeasy and reads a passage from "Travels with Charley" before young literature enthusiasts. They believe that America constantly reinvents itself and that commitment can bring about change. In the countryside, August discovers fantastic landscapes, nostalgia and visionaries. Full of optimism, he and Betsy travel on...

They are swathed in religiously-correct floor-length black coats and may neither sit at the wheel of a car without the permission of their husbands nor work: Women in the Islamic monarchy of Saudi Arabia are meant to be invisible. Now they are fighting for change despite stiff resistance. This film portrays the pioneers who want to reform their society. Rasha Hefzi was elected to the city council of Jeddah in December 2015. It was the first election in the country's history where women could both vote and stand as candidates. But the first council meeting was fractious: her conservative colleagues did not want to sit in the same room with her and tried to banish her behind a wall. But Rasha Hefzi stood her ground. She represents a new generation of Saudis, many of who have studied abroad and are critical of their county and no longer wish to be the mere subjects of a repressive absolutist kingdom. Two filmmakers spent several weeks travelling through the desert kingdom, meeting exceptional women who want to change their country's future – with wisdom, diplomacy and persistence.

19:00 DW News 19:15 Zubin Mehta – A Portrait

Documentary Zubin Mehta is one of the most charismatic conductors of our time and a citizen of the world with many facets: Indian Culture, a North American lifestyle and European music traditions. On April 29, 2016 Zubin Mehta turned 80. This film accompanies him on current projects and shows important stages of his life. If you are talking about Zubin Mehta, his great contribution to the classical concert and the opera will be one topic – the other will be his commitment to a better world. He has constantly made political statements, as when he rushed to Israel during the Six Day War in 1967 and conducted the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in gas masks. Or when he traveled with the Bavarian State Orchestra to the crisis region of Kashmir a few years ago to appeal for reconciliation between India and the Kashmiris. He shares this sense of responsibility with another conductor, Daniel Barenboim, who is also his lifelong friend. This documentary follows Mehta to places that are closely connected with his life – Mumbai, Israel, Berlin and Florence. It also looks back on a great career straddling Europe and North America – one that has also been furthered by his flair for major events with great public appeal.

Lonely, cold, inaccessible – Siberian villages are isolated and medical provision is poor. The next x-ray machine is 500 kilometers away. That’s why the Russian government owns five hospital trains to ensure basic medical care in the wilds of Siberia. The trains are well equipped with everything from surgery rooms to modern laboratories. "Saint Luke" is the name of the train we joined for two weeks to travel through a world where winter lasts nine months. It’s even got a church carriage. On the way, we meet people who live simply and work hard and accompany doctors who go way beyond the call of duty to help as many people as possible.

Old Bamberg, Germany

DW | TUE 2016-10-25 78/96

When Henry II made Bamberg a diocese in 1007, he was aiming to create a center of power on the eastern borders of his kingdom that would be unshakably loyal to him as king and later Holy Roman Emperor. That’s why he built his Christian city on seven hills – just like Rome or holy Jerusalem. Our film takes us through Bamberg winding streets. We visit its cathedral – the famous Bamberger Reiter – and stroll through the old town with its baroque facades to Little Venice, the scenic banks of the Regnitz river.

The volume of digital data produced by modern society is permanently growing – a real deluge known as "Big Data.” It is estimated that 90 percent of the total global volume of data has only been generated within the last two years. How can we bring order to and store such enormous amounts of digital data? Storage media such as DVDs, CDs and hard drives have a lifespan of about ten years. How can we ensure that key moments of life captured on digital photos will still be preserved in 20 or 30 years’ time? Or that in 100 or 500 years, information on the storage locations of nuclear waste and the necessary safety precautions are still available? How can data be stored permanently? Each potential solution presents a new scientific and technological challenge. What will replace USB flash drives? DNA? Quartz? Or will we have to go back to the sheets of paper that proved their worth over the centuries?

Ngorongoro – Noah's Crater, Tanzania

DW | WED 2016-10-26 81/96

Every morning sees the same spectacle: thick fog drifts down 500 meters from the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater and dissolves shortly before it reaches ground level. The crater floor forms an oval 19 kilometers long and 17 wide with a lake of nitric water in the middle that almost evaporates during the dry season, laving a white salt flat. What water is left looks pink because of the flocks of flamingos that inhabit the crater. Almost all the animals that live on the neighboring Serengeti can also be found here: elephants, gazelle and antelopes, baboons and monkeys, lions, jackals and hyenas – but here they crowd into a confined space. During the day, Massai tribesmen herd their cattle down from the edge of the crater and let them graze side by side with buffalo, wildebeest and zebra, although the pride of the gamekeepers, the few rhinos there, rarely show themselves on the slopes. The relative seclusion and abundance of water have turned the crater floor into a verdant haven for wildlife, a Noah’s Ark for endangered species...

Rebecca Ferguson (UK) 02:00 DW News 02:03 The Day – News in Review 02:30 A Man, a Dog and a Pickup Truck – In Search of America, Part 4

The glitter of Las Vegas may be very tempting, but things only get really interesting in the desert. Rumors about the top-secret military base Area 51, where they carried out research on aliens, are still circulating. Pat Travis, of the nearby pub "Little A’Le’Inn," waxes philosophical. "Everybody is basically scared. Just because someone’s skin is a different color, they are scared of him. Just calm down! Take control of your own life and be happy!" These inspiring words send August and Betsy on to San Francisco. August has now crossed the US from east to west – and for the last time encounters some of the country’s many contradictions. In Salinas, John Steinbeck's birthplace, he once again realizes that many of the issues the writer tackled are today more relevant than ever.

Documentary Fashion shows have long ceased to be a meeting place exclusively for the fashion correspondents of traditional print media. These days young fashion bloggers sit next to the editors-in-chief of Vogue and Elle, competing with them for territory in the fashion world. But what impact is this having on the fashion industry? Can designers keep up with the rapid digital changes? Today, the editors of the glossy fashion magazines are sharing the front rows of fashion shows with young fashion bloggers. Clicks, likes and followers have become a measure of popularity, influence and advertising clout, now fundamentally influencing results in the billion-dollar fashion industry. But who are the new powerful players? And how are the traditional media reacting to the changes? What do these changes mean for the makers and shakers in the industry? What value does fashion have if it’s to be created en masse? Is it still a powerful testament to the zeitgeist or has it become mere consumption? The documentary "Fashion is Us!" takes a look at the glamorous world of fashion in which fast trends dominate the market.

Paolo Nutini 19:00 DW News 19:15 Floods – Challenging our Future, Part 1

Documentary For several decades, climate disasters have been growing in frequency. In particular, serious flooding in large cities has increased – the sea level is rising, while the cities are sinking. Many cities, including New York, are insufficiently protected. Some scientists believe that man must abandon them one day. We have to protect ourselves from the sea and especially from storm surges. Man himself is to blame for the frequent disasters, through the excessive extraction of groundwater, dams, rapidly growing megalopolises and so-called soil liquefaction, which threatens Tokyo in particular. But we are also seeing global initiatives to manage large floods and limit the damage. Apart from human and material losses, floods cost the global economy enormous amounts of money and represent a big financial risk for the states concerned. This is because they not only have to repair any damage, but also foot the bill for losses to international trade.
