The New Standard DVB-H

• DVB-H is a new extension of the earlier standard DVB-T, which is used for terrestrial digital TV broadcasting;

• The new extension brings features that make it possible to receive digital video broadcast type services in a handheld, mobile terminal;

• DVB-H represent the convergence of the Mobile Radio (bidirectional connections, point-to-point, using relatively low data rates) and Broadcasting (unidirectional connection, point-to-multipoint, of identical content to a large number of subscribers at relative high data rates);

• The DVB-H solution purpose is to offer advantages of both systems (Mobile Radio and Broadcasting);

• Both systems DVB-T and DVB-H can coexist and are strongly related on the main core of the DVB transmission;

• The DVB-H networks architecture could look like a “sharing with DVB-T” or as a “dedicated DVB-H network”;

Set-up of DVB-T/H networks• Planning the DVB-T/H Networks can be done in few different ways:

– In the same way as analog networks, using an individual set of radio frequencies for each transmitter site. This approach is referred as a MFN;

– Due to the fact of a delayed signals arriving within the Guard Interval can be beneficial to a COFDM receiver, rather than interfering as with analogue signals, it is possible, if a suitable frequency is available and a sufficient long guard interval is chosen for all transmitters in the region or in the country, to use the same frequency in a SFN.

– SFN techniques can be use on a smaller scale to fill gaps in coverage, or even within a house where a domestic gap-filler could give portable reception;

• Setting-up DVB-T/H transmitters :

– The digital Transmitters can re-use the same site as existing analog TV transmitters so large part of the existing infrastructure can re-used. In some cases new antenna systems will be needed; if the existing antenna it has to be used, than the digital signals has to combine at high power, with the existing analog signals; Different filtering and non-linearity problems arise in each of these cases;

• Setting-up DVB-T/H Distribution Networks:

– In general a digital primary distribution network will be necessary to distribute MPEG-2-TS from TV studios/Media centers to re-multiplexing sites if the network has regional variations and to the transmitters;

– Possible choices are: optical fiber; PDH or SDH networks, ATM and satellite distribution;

– Timing of the primary distribution has to be controlled (no induced jitter in MPEG-2 decoders) and to ensure stable synchronization of the MPEG-2 multiplexers and COFDM modulators;

Set-up of DVB-T/H networks– Each piece of equipment in the programme chain will have a control input to

change modes, bit-rates, etc. All sites, therefore, will need to be linked by a Control and Monitoring Network.

• SFN Operation:

– All transmitters in a SFN have to be synchronized so that their emitted signals are frequency identically and bit identical; SFN requires a special equipment in the primary distribution network to ensure a synchronization using an universal time and frequency reference such as the one available from the GPS satellite system;

• Field Network tests and optimization:

– Digital service coverage is characterized by the as called” cliff effect” = a very rapid transition from a perfect reception to no reception at all.

– For defining and improving the coverage area for each reception condition:

• Fixed outdoor/indoor reception;

• Portable indoor (low Doppler values,<10Hz);

• Portable Outdoor reception;

• Mobile Outdoor (High Doppler values, >10Hz);

Minimum field strength considerations and different theoretical model channel profiles (propagation channel profiles) are considered.

– Frequency Handover simulation and test in a MFN is that component that will allow receivers to discover the DVB-H service on a alternative frequencies in a adjacent transmission cells.

Testing and Proofing the DVB-H capability

• Overview DVB-H Measurements:1. Base units addressing the “broadcast performance” are:

• Power level;• Frequency channel;• Display of spectrum and channel mask measurements;• MER, BER and EVM ;• C/N level;Analyze and display of the TPS information:• Constellation Diagram;• Bandwidth;• FFT mode;• Code Rate;• Guard Interval;• Alpha parameter;• Cell ID;

2. Data Broadcast Analysis:• INT table analysis;• Time slicing (correctness, relation between Burst Size, Off Time and the use

of bandwidth ) and PID distribution;• MPE analyze;• Data rate measurements;• FEC evaluation and error detection;• Timing Measurements;

Network optimization and Quality control

• DVB-H is using the DVB-T technology in order to provide cost-effective broadcast orientated data services. But, the DVB-H is also offering services based on subscriptions and fees. Therefore further monitoring, testing and quality control functions are reasonable to develop:

1. Analysis and checks of the subscriber management;

2. Analysis of the behavior of DVB-H networks in terms of a very high dynamic allocation, service requests, activations and release of data connections and services (service orientated statistics and information);

3. Collection of information for billing and accounting for a valid and fair charging of service providers and users;

4. Creation of monitoring and reference reception sites for online analysis of the transmission quality, problems, also with the capability to control processes and parameters on the transmission side;

5. Extended Field measurements of the coverage area and mobile reception using parameters like: MPE-FEC error correction, time slicing, 4K and in-depth interleaver, speed of movement, hand-over, etc;
