PRAY AND STUDYTHE SCRIPTURES

Learn• Carefully study Joshua 1:8; 1 Nephi

15:23-24; 2 Nephi 32:3;Alma 17:2-3;and D&C 21:4-6. As you study, make alist of words and phrases that describe:

1. How you should approach your study of the scripturesand words of the living prophets.

"Feast upon the wordsof Christ" (2 Nephi 32:3).

2. Blessings that will come as you study the scriptures andwords of the living prophets.

Share your list with your parents, priesthood leaders, orother quorum members. Discuss specific blessings you havereceived from following counsel the Lord has given in thescriptures and through living prophets.

• On the next page, write your plans to begin or strengthena habit of regular prayer and scripture study. For example,you could plan to study the Book of Mormon for a specificamount of time each day. Your scripture study could includethe words of the living prophets in the conference issues of

the Ensign or Liahona.

UNDERSTANDDOCTRINE

Learn• Read Doctrine and Covenants 11:21.

What promises does the Lord give tothose who study His word? Youwillneed a basic understanding and a tes-timony of gospel truths to fulfill yourduties now as a priesthood holder

and in the future as a full-time missionary and as a husbandand father.

"I give unto you acommandment that youshall teach one anotherthe doctrine of thekingdom" (D&C 88:77).

• Look at the list of doctrinal topics on page 20, and choosefour or more that you would like to learn about. One of theseshould be "The Priesthood and Priesthood Keys." You canuse the scriptures (including the Topical Guide), True to theFaith, Preach My Gospel, and the words of latter-day prophetsto learn about these topics.

• For each topic you study, create a simple outline. It couldinclude: (1) a definition of the topic, (2) teachings and ex-amples from the scriptures and your own life, and (3)yourthoughts and feelings about why this topic is important. Forexamples of outlines, see Preach My Gospel (chapters 2 and 3)or visit DutytoGod.lds.org.

The Lord has said that every priesthood holder should "learnhis duty" and "act ... in all diligence" (D&C 107:99). Thissection will help you learn and fulfill your duties as a deacon,which are outlined in Doctrine and Covenants 20:57, 59; 84:11l.

Your priesthood duties include the following:

• Administer Priesthood OrdinancesDeacons pass the sacrament.

• Serve OthersDeacons assist the bishop in "administering ... temporalthings" (D&C 107:68). This may include gathering fast offer-ings, caring for the poor and needy, caring for the meeting-house and grounds, serving as a messenger for the bishop inChurch meetings, and fulfilling other assignments from thequorum president.

• Invite All to Come unto ChristDeacons "watch over the church [and are] standing minis-ters unto the church" (D&C 84:111). They "warn, expound,exhort, and teach, and invite all to come unto Christ" (D&C20:59). This includes setting a good example, fellowship pingquorum members and others, notifying members of Churchmeetings, speaking in meetings, sharing the gospel, andbearing testimony.

SERVE OTHERS

Learn• Write down what you learn about

serving others from the followingscriptures: James 1:27, Mosiah 2:17,

and Mosiah 18:8-10. Talk with aparent or quorum leader about therelationship between being a priest-hood holder and serving others .

• Discuss with members of your quorum the opportunitiesyou have to serve others (ask your bishop or quorum leadersfor ideas). As an Aaronic Priesthood holder, you serve othersby assisting your bishop or branch president in "administer-ing ... temporal things" (D&C 107:68). This may include car-ing for the poor and needy, cleaning the meetinghouse andgrounds, gathering fast offerings, and fulfilling assignmentsfrom your quorum president. It could also include serviceprojects you decide to do on your own.

• List some specific things your quorum will do to give ser-vice. Also plan several things you will do on your own togive service, including service to members of your family.

• Contrast the missionary stories of Ammon (Alma 17-19) andCorianton (Alma 39:1-11). What influence did their actionshave on the people they taught? Consider ways you can seta good example that can help people corne unto Christ.

"Be thou an example ofthe believers, in word, inconversation, in charity,in spirit, in faith, inpurity" (1 Timothy 4:12).

• Think about family members and friends whom you couldinvite to corne unto Christ. Write down their names andwhat you will do to help them (such as inviting them toa Church activity or giving them a copy of the Book ofMormon or a Church magazine).

FOR THE STRENGTH OF YOUTH:

Physical HealthAfter you have begun working on your plans in "SpiritualStrength" and "Priesthood Duties," create a project basedon the standards in the "Physical Health" section of For theStrength of Youth. Use the steps on the following pages as aguide. Your project should be challenging and should include asignificant time commitment. It should be based on your ownneeds and interests. It should establish a pattern that will helpyou build and maintain physical healththroughout your life.

STEP 1: LEARNRead "Physical Health" in For theStrength of Youth, and study the follow-ing scriptures: Doctrine and Covenants88:124, Doctrine and Covenants 89, and1 Corinthians 3:16-17. Identify principlesthat relate to physical health. Write downyour answers to the following questions,and share them with a parent, a priest-hood leader, or quorum members:

1. Why is it important to be physicallyhealthy? How will being physi-cally healthy help you fulfill yourpriesthood duties (including as amissionary, as a father, and in yourservice to others)?

2. What are the spiritual benefits ofbeing physically healthy? Whatare the spiritual consequences ofnot caring for our physical bodiesproperly?

STEP 2: CREATE A PROJECTCreate a project that will help you apply what you havelearned about physical health. It should include two parts:(1) regular exercise and (2) nutrition. Have a parent or leaderapprove your project before you begin working on it. Hereare some examples of things you could include in each part ofyour project:

Examples-Regular Exercise• Create a monthly exercise chart. Include a variety of ex-

ercises that help you become more physically fit, such asrunning, biking, or training for a sport.

• Learn and participate in a sport.

• Increase your capabilities in a physical activity you arealready involved in.

Examples-Nutrition• Make a commitment to live the Word of Wisdom. Include in

your commitment: (a) how you will avoid situations in whichyou may be tempted to violate this commitment and (b) howyou will respond to temptations (for example, ways youmight explain to others why you obey the Word of Wisdom).

• Learn principles of proper nutrition from Doctrine andCovenants 89 and from books, the Internet, or other sources.Teach your family or quorum what you discover. Keep arecord of what you eat for a month, and then make changesto your diet based on what you have learned about nutrition.

• Learn how to prepare three nutritionally balanced meals.Prepare them for your family.
