Finally, spring approaches. Golf clubs getdusted off and hibernating golfers begin to get back out to the course. The winter monthsare coming to a close, even though we haveseen a few good weather days sprinkled in with the cold and rain. With January andFebruary behind us, the Golf Staff is preparing for a busy 2007 season and we look forward to serving the membership over the next 9 months of Dunwoody’s heavy golf season.

I am sure, as we start a new season, that manymembers have golf related questions. Many of these will be answered as we begin a newprogram at Dunwoody. Golf seminars arescheduled throughout the year that will take a quick stroll through all the areas that makegolf the game that it is. Rules and how theyaffect play at Dunwoody, handicaps and thecorrect way to maintain your handicap, golf

etiquette and course care will all be covered. It is also the perfect forum to ask the questionsthat you are not quite sure of the answer. Welook forward to seeing everyone there!

March brings the start of all three ofDunwoody’s golf groups. Tuesdays will be busy with our most active group, theDunwoody Senior Association, whileWednesday and Thursday will host our twoLadies Associations. All three of these groupshave a full schedule of events running fromMarch until the end of October. Full schedulesare available online and in our Golf Handbookand if interested in becoming a member of any of the three please give us a call in the golf shop.

March also begins the 2007 Men’s tournamentschedule with our first event in late March.Wednesday the 28th will kick off the schedule

with our first One Day Member Guest of theyear. April marks the first major event as theKickoff Classic is held shortly after a smallerevent in Augusta. We hope to see many of ournew members participating in the events aswell as the familiar winners and players from2006. Don Burton is expected to begin defenseof his 2006 Player of The Year title in theKickoff Classic.

The 2007 Junior Program and our expandedinstructional clinics get started in early Marchas well. The Junior Program continues togrow and we are expecting increased turnout in 2007. Please review the schedules for allevents, programs and clinics online and in the Golf handbook, mark your calendars andget signed up in the golf shop. It is going tobe a great year for all members to get a littlebetter at the game that makes all our lives alittle better.

2007 Junior Golf Update

Spring is here!! With Spring comes the 2007Junior Golf Season. The golf staff is excited foranother great year. Last year we witnessedrecord numbers for all of our Junior GolfPrograms. We are proud to say that we had 53 junior golfers participate in last year’s JuniorClub Championship (including two girlsflights - a first at Dunwoody), and 108 playersfor the Parent-Junior Golf Tournament. Onbehalf of the entire golf staff we would like tothank the membership for their support andcommitment to Junior Golf at Dunwoody. We hope to see the same type of support andcommitment in 2007.

The 2007 Junior Golf Schedule begins withthe Early Bird Series. We have changed theformat this year to expand the amount ofJunior’s we can accommodate. We will offertwo separate sessions; 5-7 year olds will meet on Saturday’s beginning March 3rd and 8-Older will meet on Sunday’s beginningMarch 4th. Both sessions will run for fiveconsecutive weeks from 2:00 pm-3:30 pm.The second Junior Program offered is theSpring Series. The Spring Series, which runsin April & May, is offered during the week on Tuesday’s, Wednesday’s and Thursday’sfrom 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm and from

5:00 pm - 6:00 pm. Each offering is based onage so please check the schedule to place yourchild in the proper session.

The 2007 Junior Schedule is once again full of options for junior golfers of all skill levels. Please check the Club’s website or stop by thegolf shop and pick up a copy of the 2007Junior Program Book for a detailed list ofJunior Program offerings at Dunwoody. Toregister your child for any of the JuniorPrograms simply fill out the appropriateregistration form and bring it by the golf shop. Together we can make 2007 even better than 2006!!

Dear Members,

Spring is upon us! The grounds departmentis ready to get another season off andrunning. We had a productive winter andexpect the golf course to be in wonderfulcondition this year.

We are finishing up our winter projects ofpruning trees and mulching beds. Weanticipate better turf growth in these areasdue to the increased sunlight. It will also help some of those wayward tee shots find

their way back into play more easily. We have added some Pink Muhle Grass aroundthe rocks on #5. This will give us good colorin the fall and provide a natural look. Wehave replaced the roses on #17 tee complex. We were not happy with the performance ofthe “Nearly Wild” variety and have replacedthem with the “Knock Out” variety. Theseshould give us season long color with exceptional disease resistance compared toother roses.

This time of the year I am frequently asked“when’s the course gonna green up?” Theanswer to this question is different everyyear. Bermuda begins to green up once we stop having frosty mornings and thedaytime temperatures begin to rise into theseventies. It may green up nicely in lateMarch but a hard frost can send it packing again. The frost-free date around here is midApril. Once this date has passed and webegin to get some eighty degree days the

course will gradually green up.Bermuda greens up, but reallydoes not “take off ” until we getthe hot weather of mid to lateJune. Hopefully spring will bekind to us this year!

April is a good time of the yearto mow your Bermuda andzoysia yards down low. “Scalping”as it is sometimes called, removes

all of the dead leaf material fromthe previous season. This opensup the turf canopy and allowsthe ground to warm up a littlefaster and in turn will give you aquicker green up. Scalping alsoremoves the stems and allowsyou to see the lush new growthof grass. After scalping youryard, you should apply a fertilizerhigh in nitrogen. This will help

your turf green up quickly and get your mowing legs back in shape.

I look forward to seeingeveryone at the club,

GEORGIA SPECIAL OLYMPICS FUN DAY Friday, April 27th – Fun Day

For the 11th consecutive year, Dunwoody CountryClub will host children from the Georgia SpecialOlympics for a special “Fun day” of tennis and“self-esteem building.” Last year more than 90 athletesenjoyed our members’ hospitality and the positiveencouragement of participating in a morning oftennis, watching an exhibition and playing “with thepros.” After tennis, the children will enjoy lunch andeach receives a trophy and a commemorative photo. The plans for this year are no different and onceagain, we need your help.

Approximately 40 member volunteers are needed tohelp run this event. Please call the pro shop to signup. Sponsorship is also needed, to insure that ourSpecial Olympians enjoy a day they will remember for a lifetime. If you can assist as a volunteer(volunteers do not need great tennis playing skills –only a desire to help the children have fun), or you oryour company has an interest in sponsorship, pleasecontact Kevin Jackson at 770-392-7788.

The Serve was intended sothat the net could play.

Junior Players of the Month

Maddi Johnson and Kenzie Johnson If you’ve seen two blonde girls playing tennisin shorts when it’s 30 degrees outside, you’veprobably seen Maddi and Kenzie Johnson.I don’t think these girls ever make it home.If their not taking a lesson or a clinic orparticipating in one of junior events (Maddiand Kenzie attend every event) they areconducting their own practice session. I haveseen them numerous times out on the courtsorganizing a game of Dunwoody’s favoriteChamps and Chumps. Maddi and Kenzie havefun playing tennis, and that is the main reasonthey’ve become so successful. I expect them tohit their newly found 14 and under divisionwith a striking blow.

Exercise of the Month – Deadlift

The deadlift is quite possibly the best indicatorof overall strength and power. Some “chestthumpers” love the bench press, however thedeadlift is as basic and raw as it gets. Nospecial equipment necessary. No need for aspotter. Simply load up a barbell, step up to it,squat down to the bar, grab it and stand up.Either you make it or you don’t.

Tips• In competition it is popular to use a

mixed grip (one hand up and one hand down) in order to make a stronger grip. However, this can quickly lead to muscular imbalances, particularly in the low back, as well as put you at risk for a biceps tear. If you are not training for competition you have no business using a mixed grip, stick with the double overhand grip (bothpalms down).

• Only squat as low as you need to in order tograb the barbell with the elbows locked and the back arched tightly. Squatting down deeper is wasted energy.

• Keep the head up and the back arched throughout the duration of the pull.

• Do not let the hips rise faster thanthe shoulders.

• Focus on pulling the bar back into the body while driving the hips forward.

• Squeeze the glutes tightly at the top of the lockout to protect the lower back.

• Lower the bar to the ground quickly, but under control.

2007 Body TransformationCompetition

Hopefully those of you who are participatingin the body transformation contest are seeinghuge improvements in your health, fitnessand strength. The end of the contest isapproaching so stick with those resolutionsand finish strong!
