CAREER PROFILEI will complete my final year of a Masters in Applied Architectural Design at Oxford Brookes University in June 2016 and am looking for a Part II Architectural Assistant Position that will broaden my experience of the Residential Sector. Since September I have been participating in Design Studio 3, which this year is curated by two Architects from TU Delft. Using a Russian Constructivist inspired palette I am developing an intervention within the Port of Rotterdam that deliberates on themes of Disaster Management and Food Security.
Before my Masters I completed a 3 month placement at an Architectural Practice in Brasov, Romania and then worked for 18 months at HLM Architects in Sheffield where I participated in projects in the Education, Defence and Healthcare Sectors including a successful bid for 12 Schools, the PSBP Northwest Batch, which I returned to work on in the summer of 2015.
HLM ARCHITECTS - SHEFFIELD [JUN 2015 - AUG 2015]
PSBP NW SCHOOLS BATCH - [WORKSTAGES 4-5] Within a large team I prepared packages of technical information and detailed drawings. I liaised with the Acoustic, Fire and Mechanical Engineers to develop co-ordinated detailed Elevation and Plan Drawings. I assisted developing the Internal Wall Packages by cross checking the 3D steel frame model with the details for each wall type and developed details for non-standard situations. I liaised with the Building Control officers for several schools, making alterations and issuing drawings to allow for conditions to be signed off. I prepared Information Packages for Internal Screens and Internal Doors using BIM (ArchiCAD), these packages included Details, Types and Schedules. [APR 2013 - AUG 2014]
PROJECT WELLESLEY - [WORKSTAGE 4] 13 Single Living Accommodation Buildings as part of an MoD project for a new Triforce Military Base and Defence Academy. I was responsible for 4 Junior Ranks Accommodation Blocks which I developed from the original bid stage drawings to the detailed design stage drawings, I ensured that each of the blocks met Defence Infrastructure Organisation space and performance standards. I also developed an aesthetic strategy for all 13 of the Buildings.
PSBP NW SCHOOLS BATCH - [WORKSTAGES 1-3] Working within a small team to develop a Standard Model of a Secondary School as part of the Bid Process for the contractor Morgan Sindall. My responsibilities included the drafting of general arrangement plans, sections and elevations, re-drafting and making design alterations following weekly Client and Design Team Meetings. I answered queries from the design team, issuing drawings and sketches where necessary. Liaising with an Educationalist I developed a co-ordinated set of plan drawings demonstrating the potential curriculum models our design could accommodate. I also helped develop outline designs for some of the subsequent schools, the other schools included within the bid.
PSBP TECHNICAL ADVISOR ROLE [WORKSTAGES 0-1] Working with a senior Architect, I drafted and issued Existing and Proposed Site Layout Drawings for over 50 Schools. These designs were for preliminary costing, high importance was placed upon avoiding phasing and on minimising disruption to the running of the schools. I answered queries from our clients the Education Funding Agency and EC Harris, and attended a site visit.
SHEFFIELD UNIVERSITY CATCH [WORKSTAGES 2-3] A feasibility study for a new scientific research facility at Sheffield University, The Centre for Assistive Technology and Connected Healthcare. I attended weekly client meetings and two pre-planning application meetings. I undertook a thorough site analysis for the complicated site, I participated in the design development, suggesting initial options and developing the preferred one.
OTHER PROJECTS, COMPETITIONS AND BIDS - ARMY BASING ASSESSMENT STUDIES - GRANTHAM; FORGOTTEN SPACES; SHEFFIELD CENTRAL LIBRARY; SLAM HOUNSLOW BARRACKS; HEARTSPACE BID - FACULTY OF ENGINEERING; NORTH AYRSHIRE HOSPITAL; LINCOLN UNIVERSITY HEALTH SCIENCES BID
INHITECTURE - BRASOV, ROMANIA [JAN 2013 - MARCH 2013]
LOFT APARTMENT CONVERSION [WORKSTAGES 4] I conducted a detailed site survey, developing a 3D model of the existing spaces including primary and secondary structure, to develop a schedule of works required for conversion of a loft space into a one bedroom flat. I later accompained a builder to the site to review the work which would take place.
BRASOV APARTMENTS [WORKSTAGES 4] I helped carry out a detailed site survey of a partially built hotel complex and developed intial options for dividing the building into 1, 2 and 3 bedroom premium apartments.
CHRISTIAN HOUSE [WORKSTAGES 1-3] To develop designs for a modern 3 bedroom luxury house on an empty site just outside of Brasov. My responsibilities were to interpret the clients brief, develop initial options and then a preferred option.

AWARDS, LECTURES, PRESENTATIONS, TUTORINGAWARDS West Waddy ADP Student Award 2015 - Exceptional Work Combining the Dual Disciplines of Architecture and Town Planning. Oxford Brookes End of Year Show.
LECTURES Oxford Brookes MArchD Technology Yr. 2 Lecture Series - To offer an overview of the topics covered within SBPD the previous year and to suggest ways sustainability can be intergrated into Design Studio projects.
PRESENTATIONS West Waddy ADP Presentation - Sustainable Design in Context, Northern Gateway Project Award. Oxford Brookes MArchD SBPD Yr. 1 - Sustainable Design in Context, Northern Gateway Project.
TUTORING - Oxford Brookes MArchD SBPD Yr.1 - Critiquing Sustainable Design in Context Projects with sites in Oxford and Brazil.
OXFORD BROOKES UNIVERSITY [SEPT 2015 - PRESENT]DESIGN STUDIO 3 [ACTUAL POLITICS AND EXPRESSIBLE FANTASIES] Commenced the year with two group-work projects: researching the 1972 Berlin, Teirgarten competition entry of O M Ungers and writing a group narrative to develop our ideas on “The City”. Once completed I decided to develop an individual project narrative, which I tested through a series of design exercises. I designed an entry for the Montreal Metis Garden Competition exploring themes of sustainability in food production and conducted structural studies on a Rowan Gorilla oil rig using 45 - 45 Axonometric drawings. More recently we visited Rotterdam and I chose a site for my design project in Waalhaven, one of the older parts of Rotterdam’s 40km Harbour.
[SEPT 2014 - JUN 2015]SBPD - [SUSTAINABLE BUILDING: PERFORMANCE AND DESIGN] [DISTINCTION] While undertaking a specialism in sustainability during the first year of my masters I completed the following modules: 1. The Sustainable Built Environment - accompanying a lecture series, I developed a Quality of Life focused masterplan for the Northern Gateway Development which would later become the site; 2. Building Physics, using a simple building model to calculate yearly heating and cooling requirements; 3. Modelling And Passive Strategies, learning IES to help develop our design studio project, by modelling lighting, ventilation and temperature. 4. Sustainable Design In Context - For our main design module I choose to design a high quality, high density development that embodies what people like about rural living. OTHER MODULES - TECHNOLOGY, REPRESENTATION, RESEARCH PHILOSOPHY IN DESIGN, MANAGEMENT PRACTICE AND LAW
SHEFFIELD HALLAM UNIVERSITY [SEPT 2009 - JUN 2012]ARCHITECTURE AND ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN BSc [2.1] Our main design studio projects were a theatre in the rural Yorkshire town of Holmfirth and a library for a dilapidated area of central Sheffield. All projects had a strong focus on the Environment and on being appropriate for the Context. Our other modules included Representation, Construction Technology, Environmental Technology, 2D/3D AutoCAD and Cultural Context.

INTERESTSDuring my spare time I am exploring Oxfordshire, which I’m relatively new too. Any recommendations for nice places to visit with pretty country pubs are very welcome, I like eating out.
I like keeping active, enjoy a regular game of Squash and the occasional badminton session, mixing in a swim when I can.
I also like to keep up to date with current affairs and advancements in technology.

Mai'da: Our bedrooms
being on a different level
from our kitchen makes it
feel more like a home.
Mai'da: If we like, we can add a
balcony to this window, we'd be
able to sit out and amire the
sunset, while watching goings on.
I like having the option to
personalise my apartment even in
a dense development.
Mai'da: The shutters on the
north west facade mean I
can block out the sun in the
afternoon, if I need to sleep
in the day following a late
night of work.
TY: These high level windows
into the courtyard, mean we get
good sun in these rooms
throughout the day, also really
useful to get a good draft
through the bedrooms.
TY: I really like having my
own front door and the
courtyard, gives me a
good opportunity to chat
to my neighbours.
TY: I recieve part of the
maintainence fee that
everyone pays to look after
the planting, especially
the fruit and veg which I
distribute between us all.
Any excess I sell at the
farmers market.
Liam: These rooms would
get quite hot in summer if
it wasn't for the deciduous
shading in the street that
blocks out some of the
summer sun.
Amaya: Me and my kids
love being able to pick
fresh fruit straight from
the two fruit trees we have
on the roof terrace and in
the courtyard.
Liam: These windows to
the stairs not only let in
valuable light they let me
see my neighbours as they
walk through the
courtyard.
Andre: We like to host quite a few
parties in our flat, because of the
acoustic seperation in the floor
and the distance between sleeping
and living areas we can do this
without disturbing our neighbours.
Ty: The stairs help seperate
the livings areas areas on
the south side of the block
from the sleeping areas to
the north. This is great for
keeping things nice and
quiet.
Mai'da: The lourved
balustrade offers us
some additional
privacy from people
looking up from the
street.
Ty: Having our bedrooms
on the north side keeps
them cooler.
Andre: We use our
space on the roof
terrace to hang
out our washing
to dry.
Amaya: I love
having a place to let
my kids play outside
securely and also
still chat with my
neighbours, the
extra interaction
does them good.
