introduction

Our intentions behind your landscape design project were to create a sustainable outdoor space that offered four-season interest, beauty and functionality. For this particular landscape, we strived to capture the essence of the location by incorporating existing elements such as the pond, spring house, surrounding topography, client circulation and signifi cant viewsheds. By understanding and calculating existing elements, we were able to weave together a naturalistic landscape that showcased your residence’s most noteworthy features.

Our concept for this space began by embracing a nature-infl uenced design style that utilized such features as organic lines, native plant communities, habitat zones and sustainable principles. A naturalistic garden recreates the spontaneous feeling of plants as they appear nature. Its distinctive approach uses plant collections rather than hardscaping to infl uence the overall look of the landscape; by emphasizing the form, texture and natural harmony of plants. Throughout the landscape, our design meshes airy ornamental perennials with sculptural woody plants to create strong visual impact.

Our goal as designers, was to replicate natural plant communities as they would appear in a North American deciduous forest or wetland. By mimicking natural plant community structure, we were able to create graceful transitions from one habitat to the next. All of the plants were organized according to their cultural preferences to ensure best suitability for each habitat. In either the woodland or wetland setting, our plant collections create interest and drama from early spring through the climax of summer to the austere beauty of the plants dying back in the fall.

A delicate palette of understory shade and partial sun loving plants were dispersed randomly in groups that echoed the layers of vegetation as seen in nature. Providing various levels of shade to the understory are small and medium native trees. Our woodland garden began with the intentions of creating an intimate seating area that was connected to both the residence and pond through a network of pathways. In order to effectively create a private seating area, plant material was placed in large drifts to control certain views - screening those that were unwanted and framing others.

The woodland and wetland gardens incorporate native favorites such as Paper Birch, Shadblow Serviceberry and Sweetbay Magnolia. All three of these deciduous trees are native to the North American deciduous forest. The Paper Birch is a large multi-trunked specimen with chalky white exfoliating bark, causing it to be a dramatic focal point during the fall into the winter months. The Birch trees were clustered in the far corner, closest to the road, to replicate a naturalistic grove and to provide a certain level of screening. The Serviceberry were scattered throughout the landscape to add color to the property during the spring. Shadblow Serviceberry is a small multi-trunked tree with delicate white fl owers that mature into red pendulous fruit in the fall. It is a popular food source for song birds and an attractive specimen during all four seasons. Along the pond, are three Sweetbay Magnolia trees. This particular Magnolia is best suited alongside a body of water, and provides lemon-scented blooms during the spring. Its foliage is considered to be semi-evergreen, and is quite attractive fl ickering on the branches during a light breeze.

The understory was created by combining perennials with native deciduous shrubs. The groupings were intended to replicate plant communities that naturally occur together. Shrubs having outstanding fall color were accompanied by those that display spring/ summer fl owers or ones that exhibit winter interest. Spring time fl owering shrubs include the Arrowwood Viburnum, Japanese Pieris and Gray Dogwood. All three shrubs offer completely different fl ower forms and foliage textures. The Arrowwood Viburnum and Gray Dogwood offer creamy-white clusters of fl owers that, once pollinated, mature into berry-like fruits that persist into the winter months. The Japanese Pieris is a broad-leaf evergreen with chain-like white fl owers that emerge in the early spring. During the summer months, Summersweet Clethra and Buttonbush offer nectar sources for native butterfl ies and sweet smelling fragrances. Buttonbush, a bog loving shrub, is located alongside the pond. The Summersweet Clethra, with its highly attractive pink spires, is place alongside walkways and the designated seating area. Amongst the woody plant collections are perennials to add color to dark shady nooks or the full sun border.

Spring through fall, the colors of the landscape evolve from brightly colored blooms to brilliantly textured foliage. Various native perennials usher in the spring with subtle pastels, later embracing the summer with a vivid spectrum of multiple colors. Throughout the woodland, shade loving perennials are placed in large groups to brighten the deep understory with interesting textures, vivid colors and majestic forms. The full sun border alongside the ponds edges are densely planted with an eclectic mixture of native wildfl owers. The selected perennials are extremely fl ood tolerant, whimsical and colorful. In time, the plants will self-sow and blend together to form a sea of mixed textures and colors.
