Oriole held a NACSW Odor Recognition Test (ORT) on Saturday, Dec 15, 2018. 94 tests were conducted; we had 100 tests registered (allowed maximum) with a waiting list, but Maryland’s liquid sunshine kept some folks away. 9am and we were all on the road home by 2:30p, which may be a record time. There were many great dogs and handler teams to watch with lots of diversity in dog breeds and types. The rain did not dampen the exhibitors’ enthusiasm for showing and complementing our volunteers on their friendliness, organization, efficiency and hospitality. Congratulations to the Oriole members, who passed their ORTs; for clove, Sue Cox and Villain; Gail Gee and Brandy and Helena Dahlen and Porter; Deborah Dean and Iselin passed in anise. YOUR VIDEOS

AND PHOTOS Your videos and photos of

your dog at events are

needed. These clips and

photos will be used to create

a club video to be used in our

Outreach Program. You may

submit your videos and

photos, from any dog sport

Oriole trains in, and it will be

reviewed for inclusion (e.g.

Nosework, Flyball, Agility,

Obedience/Rally, etc.).

Please send your video clips

and photos to Rose Kane at

[email protected].

HELP WANTED - VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES! Oriole is an ALL VOLUNTEER club. Member & Provisional Member help is necessary & appreciated!

Jan. 25-27 AKC Agility If you are interested in working at the AKC Pet Expo agility trial, please send your

name to Nancy Morris at [email protected]. Your name will go on a list at the

agility door so you get a free entry into the Pet Expo for working at the

trial. Volunteers needed on Jan. 25-27 throughout day.

Jan. 26 & 27 AKC Agility – (see SHOW OFF YOUR DOG’S TALENTS AT THE PET EXPO article on this page)

Feb. 10 – Show and Go - We are in need of Show and Go Judges and Stewards! Please send an email to [email protected] by Feb. 1, if you can volunteer as a judge, steward in the ring or at the ring table for the Obedience Show and Go on Feb. 10.

Steward jobs: figure 8 posts, setting up bar & high jump heights, broad jump, placing gloves out, placing articles out, table steward to keep entries flowing in & out of the ring. Those are the main duties that are very simple to perform.

Judges job: Acting as the judge (with the understanding of the exercise routines) in the ring for each of the exercises and keep each run flowing smoothly.

Lunch will be provided to the volunteers and you get a free run with your dog before we start the SNGo at 10:00am.

Volunteers are requested to be at the building by 9:00am and the first dog registered starts at 10:00am. Usually we finish up judging around 3:00pm, then we will need assistance to reset the panels and obedience rings for Monday classes.

Feb. 9 at 3:30pm we are in need of volunteers that can assist with moving blue panels, building the rings on the agility side, move jumps over and setting up some tables. This should not take more than two hours.

If you have sponsored someone as a provisional member, please forward this email to them as this is an excellent way for them to earn their volunteer credits.

Fri. Feb. 15 & Sun. Feb. 17–NADAC Agility Setup & Tear Down - Set up will

begin at 5:00 pm on Friday, 2/15/18

We will need help with: moving the blue panels from the field, -moving the

equipment from the agility field, -clearing ring gating & obed. equipment from the

obedience field, bringing tables out for the trial secretary, there will be other

small/lightweight tasks to be done.

We will also need help with teardown on Sunday, 2/17/18. Time to be

determined. Lorinda McKisson will be your point of contact when you arrive.

Paid opportunities to set-up/tear-down for non-ODTC events may be available -

Anyone who wants to help should contact Russ Bobb.

Nose Work Presentation On Sat., Feb. 9, 2019 at 11am ODTC will be hosting a presentation by Lauryn DeGreeff, Ph.D., a

Research Chemist from the US Naval Research Laboratory, Washington DC. Lauryn has been conducting

research on Canine Odor Discrimination and Detection.

Lauryn will describe odor detection targeting on a molecular level and the basics of odor development

from an odor source into a plume. She will describe how odor emanates from a target object and how the

dog might perceive this odor. She will also discuss the factors that affect how dogs’ experiences target

odor, target mass versus odor quantity, differences between manufacturers, changes with time and

environmental conditions, and the challenges related to wrapping and burial. She will also present factors

affecting odor availability and methods to prevent contamination of training materials. Finally, a research

study conducted by the U.S. Navy involving NACSW dogs will be described.

This session is open & FREE to all Oriole Dog Training Club members and any DOD Navy research

dog handling team, others are asked to contribute $5. Though the topic is nosework focused, the

information crosses over into other odor related sports like tracking.

Please contact Linda Grskovich at [email protected] to hold your space. Light refreshments will be

served following the one-hour presentation.

Shout-Outs!

NACSW Odor Recognition - Many thanks to our volunteers, who not only came out for the

Saturday event but also set up on Friday night: Linda Grskovich, Donald Grskovich, Rachel

Lachow, Debbie Knowles, Sue Cox, Carol Jennings, Deborah Dean, Leslie Wharton, Adrien

Meckley, Shirley Harry, Lisa Jones, Helena Dahlen, Linda Harrison, and Joe Moran . We also had

volunteers from the nose work community who were not ODTC members, many thanks to Gale

Erskine, Ron Storrer and Linda Davis. All made the ORT a great event. Though the day was very

wet, their enthusiasm for the sport was not dampened. Thanks again everyone.

From Monique Bocock: Padmee Amidala v. Adhem (“Kalani”), Daenerys von Adhem (“Khaleesi”) and

I competed in the 2018 AKC Agility Invitational in Orlando, FL 14-16 December. Kalani and I were happy

to make our 5th appearance. Khaleesi, who was ranked 7th coming into Invitational, was one weave pole

short of a perfect weekend and was the number two Entlebucher at the Invitational.

BIO for the Recipient of the 2018 Sidekick Award This year’s recipient is a long time flyball instructor. She attends practices each week with commitment

to the sport, team and students. This person repeatedly shares expertise and advice to students and

seasoned flyball’ers alike.

The dog portion of the team is equally steadfast. He is a true athlete who can be used with green dogs to

teach confidence, passing, and not to chase. This dog is even adept enough to teach green handlers how

to run dogs! He can run anywhere in the line-up, pass any dog without issue, is consistent in the lanes,

and rarely makes mistakes.

The handler portion of the team can always be counted on. This person steps up to do whatever task that

needs doing, often offering to help anyone on the team who needs it.

This is a hardworking and multi-talented team that is truly deserving of our club’s highest Flyball Award.

This year’s Sidekick Annual Award winner is Lauralee McGuire and Sulli.

BIO for the Recipient of the 2018 Prince Award

The person chosen for this year’s Prince Award is very deserving of our club’s highest recognition.

This member has taught classes under 3 of our 4 training directors. I am sure, given the opportunity, that this member will get that 4th category in.

This member has energy to spare. Their enthusiasm and willingness to help are truly amazing. I have

never seen this member in ODTC’s building when they are not helping in some form or another. Either

teaching, helping someone out or volunteering at an event while still finding time to work their own dogs. If an event advertises that help is needed, you can count on this member to show up and help. You can

see this member working at any event that they attend.

This member’s dog is titled in Flyball but has trained in agility, disc dog, dock diving, obedience and

tricks. More activities are most likely in their future.

The recipient for the Prince Award this year is Rose Kane and Moose.

New Puppies! If you have a new puppy (8 weeks – 1 year) submit pictures so that others may enjoy some puppy cuteness! Congratulations to Sheila Mehring on her new pup, Misty!
