GOING BEYOND ISSUE 14 Ren Ci Nursing Home (Moulmein) has recently been given an image revamp, thanks to our new friends from Dulux Singapore. On 14 November, more than 30 Dulux Singapore’s staff brought not only new paint, but also their warmest hearts to adorn Ren Ci Nursing Home with a brand new paint-over and spruce up the existing garden behind the wards. Volunteers from Dulux had planned a series of activities such as Bingo and karaoke session in the day to keep the residents occupied while others were painting outside the wards. By late afternoon, Ren Ci Nursing Home had a brand new outlook all thanks to our team of volunteers. Besides volunteering their time to revamp the outlook of the wards, Dulux Singapore had previously sponsored the Project Paint Ren Ci group that helped give mural walls within the wards brand new colors and look, all of which is only made possible by their dedicated team of volunteers. UP CLOSE & PERSONAL

Ren Ci Hospital recently welcomed our new Group Director of Nursing Ms Sim Teck Meh Jenny into our big family. With a stellar career in various nursing and rehabilitation settings, Jenny is committed to share her wealth of experience with colleagues at Ren Ci to create a person-centred environment for patients. In this issue of Up Close and Personal, Jenny shares her experiences and personal goals for her team.

42 years in healthcare: From volunteer to Nursing Director

My healthcare experience started way back in my secondary school days where I volunteered at Tan Tock Seng Hospital’s Cardio Thoracic unit. I then went on to take up nursing as a career and spent 42 years in the acute care hospital working as a nurse in various departments, moving up the ranks. Subsequently I was asked to set up an off-site Rehabilitation Centre for TTSH, overseeing the therapists, nurses as well as general operations.

The challenge to help patients transit from acute setting back to community

While I was in-charge working in a Rehabilitation Centre, I realised that there was a big gap in the services provided by the acute hospital and that available in the community.

I then began working closely with the community to bring some of our expertise and services to them and to impart skills to the staff working in the community, such as the Day Care Centres, Community Hospitals and Society for the Physically Disabled. When I was approached to join Ren Ci, I felt the passion to continue to do my bit to improve the services in the community. After all, I had been blessed so much; it is time to give back. I have so much experience that I can share with my fellow nurses and to make a difference in the care of Ren Ci patients and residents.

I would like to improve the patient/resident experience at Ren Ci. Programs and care will be more person-oriented. I will intensify nursing skills-based training to ensure that our nurses are competent and better equipped to care for patients.

Getting to know the Ren Ci family

My four months here had been wonderful as everyone has been very supportive and friendly. I was able to reach out to the nurses and patients and to gain their trust and understand the challenges that they faced. Ren Ci has an amazing culture. It is like a family here and we all work as a team.

Creating a better hospital experience for patients/ residents in the New Year

n began working closely with the community to bring some of our expertise

There was a lack of continuity of care then, for patients who had gone through acute treatment especially after a major illness or injury. What happens to the patients even after a stint of intensive rehab? What happens to patients who were unable to go for rehabilitation? How are they and their families coping?

A moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips!

IN THE PINK OF HEALTH

Are you eating right this festive period?

More often than not, the lack of knowledge and understanding of what are you eat everyday will put you in the higher risk for High Cholesterol, High Blood Pressure and Diabetes. Having a healthy diet will help keep many of the chronic diseases at bay. There are 6 key elements to follow in order to have a healthy diet and they are:

Balanced diet: Healthy Diet Pyramid Limiting fat intake Taking food that lowers cholesterol (i.e. nuts, soya, oats) Monitoring salt intake Consuming enough dietary fibre Avoiding excessive alcohol consumption

The wide variety of savoury food and snacks available in the market will no doubt be a temptation this festive season. The Healthy Diet Pyramid chart below can be a useful guide for your daily food intake:

The key to a happy and healthy festive period is always to eat in moderation and have adequate intake of greens and fluid. As the old dieter’s quote goes “A moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips!” Let us achieve a well-balanced diet to keep those inches off our hips!

Ren Ci Hospital would also like to take this opportunity to wish all Happy and Healthy New Year!
