57 JAPAN. MANEN ERA, 1860-62. AV OBAN (10 RYO), Oval with horizontal indentations and patterned security edge; black ink calligraphy with four mon stamps. Three vertical stamps and three moneyers' stamps lower left on reverse. (c.112.8grams), 135mm x 80mm. Rare. The oban is in well preserved condition showing small amounts of ink loss and surface wear, a dark test mark on upper right of reverse, also a small file mark on security edge c.13mm. (one coin)

A similar example can be found in the catalogue of the Japanese Coin Collection at the British Museum. The founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate, Leyasu, established a gold, silver and bronze denomination system that lasted until the Meiji restoration ended the Shogunate's rule. The largest denomination in this coinage system was the Oban gold piece, which was typically used as a special reward or a gift, rather than day to day transactions.

The piece on offer is from the Manen era, the final era before the Meiji Restoration and after US Commodore Matthew Perry helped to end Japan's isolationist policies under the Shogunate. The design for this coin features the Kiri crest of the office of the Prime Minister of Japan. The symbol - or mon - is the paulownia flower, and is known as the Princess Tree in Japan. An interesting feature of this piece is its' security edge, which prevents any unscrupulous individuals from shaving or filing the edge of the coin.

This rare coin highlights the following collection of Japanese coins, which were amassed over the last twenty or thirty years by a collector who has a particular interest in Japanese coins, art and antiques. This particular piece was purchased from a private estate sale in the 1990's by the present vendor and it is believed not to have exchanged hands since 1928.

Reverse: Ye Shall Live Also. St. John14:19. Faith Holding a cross on her shoulder beside a woman with infant in her hands. Building with the monogram of Catherine II to right, a column with the signature of engraved I.G.WAECHTER FECIT; In exergue: September, First Day, Year 1763.

Provenance: The Batten Family, Church Farm, Ryme Intrinseca, Dorset.

This medal with others are purported to have been given to Mrs Haynes granddaughter J. Chamberlain, who was a librarian to George III by Catherine II Empress of Russia, as she (Chamberlain) obtained for the Empress certain pictures in Windsor Castle.

J. Chamberlain was the third great grandmother of H.C.C Batten who was given the medals in 1906.

IVANOVICH BETSKOJ was a Russian school reformer who served as Catherine the Great's advisor on education, and President of the Imperial Academy of the Arts for thirty years (1764-94). He established Russia's first unified system of public education and documented the above medal:

'On the obverse side of the medal was depicted a half length portrait of Catherine the Great, while on the reverse we can see the personification of the Christian symbol of faith (the creed) under the veil, who is holding a cross in her right hand. The Faith is leaning on the pedestal of the church building and commands the humanity presented as a young woman. To pick up the child and to bring it to the charity based Sovereign House (Moscow Foundling Home) Above the visible words of the Saviour, 'Ye Shall Live Also' St.John14:19, on the bottom... is the line 'September, 1st Day, in 1763. Catherine the Great was presented with five golden, two silver and six bronze medals, and her son Pavel Petrovich received one of each kind.'

275 RUSSIA, COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL. Transportation of the granite monolith for the monument to Peter I, 1770, by J.C.G. Jaeger.

Obverse: Laureate bust of Catherine II left, mantled and wearing star and ribbon: above the portrait signature of engraver J.C.G. JAEGAR.

Reverse: A panoramic view of the transport of the granite block with Tsarina, workers, and spectators.

The reverse of this medal is based on an engraving by I.F.Schley of the drawings by Y.M.Felten. The block of granite used as a pedestal for the monument was called 'The Thunder Stone', and was considered to be the largest stone ever moved by man. Its weight was

calculated at 15,000 tonne, it was moved 6km overland to the Gulf of Finland and then by barge to St. Petersburg. The project was considered a historic engineering feat, all work was done by men, no animals or machines were used in the transport of the stone. The engineer in charge was a Greek serving as a Leftenant Colonel in the Russian Army, Marinos Carburis. He was the first Greek to hold a diploma in engineering.

The medal is believed to be one of the finest of the few known and has minimal wear appearing in its original state with proof-like fields and finely engraved frosted relief. The medal is being offered contained in what appears to be its original turned wood box.

Somewhere in Britain a group of infantry accidentally entered a minefield intended to trap invaders. Some mines exploded and all around the ground was thickly sown with other unexploded mines. Corporal Basil. A. Hanham, of the 13th London regiment was shot during the First World War in France whilst in the trenches on Christmas Eve. The bullet narrowly missed his heart and lodged itself into his lung which could not be removed. He recovered and went on to serve with St. John's Ambulance in the Second World War.

Private Eric. A. Hanham, also of the 13th London Regiment was serving at the front. He has a remarkable escape from a serious wound, through having a small tobacco box in the pocket of his tunic. He was shot at by the Germans whilst carrying out his volunteered duty as a brigade runner. He was hit but was miraculously saved by the bullets becoming lodged into a tobacco box. He was also wounded by a shot to his right buttock, which, whilst recovering in hospital Eric recieved a comical postcard from a fellow serviceman 'Frank', who wrote, 'So sorry to hear that you have received a dud blighty...' 'I feel sure that the blighters' number will be on the board before xmas, and won't we have glorious beans together...'

This rare collection includes the tobacco box with the bullet, and also photographs taken at the time of Private Eric A. Hanham holding the tobacco box which saved his life.

Provenance: The Hannam family by descent.

402 SECOND LIEUTENANT JOHN HENRY STRODE BATTEN, the King's Regiment, Liverpool. A pair of Queen's and King's South Africa medals, with clasps, Cape Colony, Defence of Ladysmith, Orange Free State, Trans Vaal, South Africa, 1901 and 1902. This collection of medals, dress uniform, court sword and engraved cigar box are included with a letter written by Second Lieutenant Batten during the defence of Ladysmith, on December 1st 1899.

The letter, written in pencil, reads:

"My Dear Grandpa, I am writing this to you during the siege of Ladysmith, or rather, I trust, the last few days of the siege. We have been shut up here since the 2nd of Nov, and it has been a very momentous affair, as since that date we have been completely cut off from the rest of the world, so have no papers or letters. A few runners have I believed managed to get through the Boer lines with dispatches at odd times. We are now expecting daily to be relieved... I expect soon to hear of a big fight outside here and then relief. To describe the siege, it is enough to say that one day is exactly the same as another. We get up at three thirty am, parade at four am, stand about ready to march off to assist attack ‘til daylight has fairly dawned. The rest of the day we build and repair our fortifications... and lie under shields constructed against

the enemy shells. Our battalion find three companies for outpost duty when we remain shut up in trenches for five days until relieved. Am on outpost duty now. Sometimes we often have to work at night as it is pretty safe from shelling. Then lately we have been chiefly suffering from having nothing to do all day, as the walls are all built so we lie in the trenches and chase away the flies which are a regular plague here. I am glad to say I am fit and well. Was under fire for the first time at the battle of Intintaymi. Felt a bit shaky at first but soon got used to it. Boers have been shelling the camp daily (except Sundays). Since the beginning of the siege we have lost one Sergeant and nine men. It is surprising how little damage their shells have done considering the number of shells that have been dropped. Grub and drink are getting scarce. Find the heat terrific and it is not mid-summer yet. Will write again better, but thought you would like to hear a word so please excuse the scrawl. With best love to Uncle Henry and Yourself, Your Affectionate Grandson, J. H. Strode Batten."

The fascinating and historical letter is contained in the original envelope with Yeovil postmark. The uniform and hat contained in original tin trunks.

This fascinating collection of important military history has been well preserved for generations.

Barnes thanks his correspondent for their letter and remarks that he is " .. sorry that you were pained at the omission of your name as a subscribed to parish work, but i hope that God willing another years almanac may give the names of subscribers to the school and the names of those under whose tickets came patience may be sent to the hospital although subscriptions as such to the hospital do not belong to my account ... you kindly gave £20 a year to the school which however is known here and is known what hospital tickets are given on your subscription ... ". In concluding Barnes refers to Damers' daughter "whom he saw at a school tea on Wednesday and whom has 'scated' on Came Pond".

610 RICHARD WAGNER (1813-1883) A hand written letter written to the conductor Hans Richter, signed and dated "Bayreuth 9th October 79", written in violet ink, two sides with envelope.

Extracts from the letter read:

"Dear Richter, I know nothing at all of Naples and a "lohengrin" there and - wouldn't really trouble myself about it, as i have even less desire to hear of my opera performances there than the ones here in quiet Bayreuth! However, it will be a pleasure if Mr Candidus wishes to call on me ....

Jager has had proposals for repetitions of "Gotterdammerung": there is something in the works. Let him sing Siegmund for once: it will be better! But what is the name of the cafe on the corner at Karthnertor? - ugh! ...

But now an end to all the talking, and come visit us for once - you've shilly shallied for long enough! ...

Your obedient servant, R Wagner "

611 SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL (1874-1965). A PERSONAL FLYING LOG BOOK OF CAPTAIN ANDREW CANNON TREYER EVANS, signed by Sir Winston Churchill in blue ink on a page of the log book "Madeira to Southampton, The Rt. Hon. Winston Churchill +4', January 1950". The first entry in the log book is for April 1946.

Captain Evans enlisted in the RAF in 1941 and was demobilised with the rank of Flight Lieutenant on the 25th July 1946. In the Second World War he was pilot conducting Anti-U-Boat patrols, Troop transport and instructing.

Also included with this collection are two volumes of "The Second World War", by Sir Winston Churchill, both signed by Winston Churchill and one inscribed:

"Inscribed for Captain Evans, Winston Churchill, 1950."

Attached in the cover of this volume is a typed letter from Cecily Gemmell, dated 28th March 1950: "Mr Churchill still recalls with pleasure his comfortable flight back from Madeira in your aircraft ", signed by Cecily Gemmell, Private Secretary.

A newspaper cutting included: "Back in case I am needed" describes the turbulent weather in which this flight took place. "Providence was on our side all the way, and the fog lifted just at the right time."

Provenance: The Evan's Family by Descent.

612 SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL (1874-1965) "The Second World War", six volumes by Winston S. Churchill, each volume signed and inscribed to Miss Mabel Johnson, O.B.E.

Miss Mabel Johnson worked for the British Red Cross alongside Lady Spencer Churchill organising Russian food convoys during World War II, and became friends. As a result of this Lady Spencer Churchill gave Mabel Johnson this set of books. Included with this lot is a photograph of Miss M. Johnson beside Lady Churchill talking to a Russian Diplomat in 1943, an oil portrait of Miss M. Johnson, in a glazed frame, Miss Johnson's OBE and miniature First World War medals, and various newspaper cuttings.

The Times, Monday June 27th 1955. Lady Churchill writes:

"Miss Mabel Johnson, OBE, worked for the British Red Cross Society in both great wars. In the years between she was a member of the Conservative Central Office and held the post of Constituency Organiser and afterwards District Agent for the North and North West of England. She was well-known and well-loved by all who had to do with her in this work."

"In the First World War she was a member of a Red Cross Ambulance Unit, one of the women who replaced the men drivers in the lines of communication and were known for their energy and fearlessness. Miss Johnson returned to the Red Cross and the Order of St. John in the early days of World War Two; there she distinguished herself as a first class organiser, notably as secretary to the Central Hospital Supply Service and later in the War as Director of Civilian Relief. But it is of Miss Johnson's work for Russia that I can write with personal knowledge. In 1941 she became secretary of the Red Cross Aid to Russia Fund and in 1944 she went to Russia to establish Red Cross contacts. Her visit was a solid achievement and the next year we went to Russia together as guests of the Soviet Government. During the years 1941-1948 links were forged and strengthened between the two societies, largely by Miss Johnson's capacity, her training, her knowledge, and her lovable nature; these links have, alas, been frozen by the 'Cold War', but perhaps the seed industriously sowed and fostered may be alive, though buried, and may bear fruit some day. Miss Johnson was an officer of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. She also held two Russian declarations, the medal of the Red Banner of Labour and Distinguished Service Badge of the Russian Red Cross and Red Crescent."

Provenance: Miss Mabel Johnson was the vendor's Aunt.

GLOSSARY OF CATALOGUING TERMS

The use of onverted comas around the name of an artist, or date, in connetion with a signature, or inscription (ie. signed “Nicholas Chevalier”) indicates that the signature, or inscription, may have been added by another hand.

ARTIST’S RESALE RIGHTFrom mid February 2006 living artists are entitled by law to receive a resale royalty each time their work is resold by or to an art market professional. From 1st January 2012 the Right has been extended to include sales of works by artists who have died within the last 70 years (following the existing term of copyright). Royalties will be payable to the families and beneficiaries of these artists. An art work must be resold for more than 1,000 Euros to qualify for the right. The rates payable are calculated as a percentage of the hammer price and are set out in a sliding scale from 4% to 0.25%. The charge is exclusive of VAT. The auctioneers reserve the right to pass all of the cost to the person buying the qualifying art work

The auctioneers are always pleased to discuss individual lots with prospective purchasers prior to the auction and will provide condi-tion reports on request. If you require clarification of any terms employed in the catalogue please do not hesitate to seek advice. The auctioneers are also pleased to discuss lots which may have been altered, repaired, or restored.

The term basically used in conjunction with a date (ie. basically 18th century) indicates that, in our opinion, the item may have under-gone restoration, repair, or alteration. It also indicates that only an element of the piece may date from the period stated in the descrip-tion. The absence of the term basically does not imply that an item is without restoration, repair, or alteration. The use of inverted comas around a word or phrase (ie. “pearl”) indicates that the piece, or object, may not be what it is purporting to be. (ie. a simulated pearl). If you are in doubt our specialists are available prior to the auction to offer guidance and advice.

With Chinese ceramics and works of art, if the catalogue states that the object in question bears a mark, but it does not state “and of the period” it indicates that we believe the lot in question may not date from the period suggested by the mark. Clearly, references to the colour of jade are subjective and again buyers are advised to inspect personally any items on which they intend to bid to ensure the colour meets with their expectation.

Care is taken to ensure that any statement as to authorship, attribution, origin, date and provenance is reliable and accurate, but all such statements of opinion and are not to be taken as statement or representations of fact. Hy. Dukes & Son reserve the right, in forming their opinion, to consult and rely upon any expert or authority reasonably considered by them to be reliable.

Descriptions of property in this catalogue do not always indicate condition, repair or damage. Buyers are earnestly advised to inspect personally any lot they intend to purchase. Weights and measurements are approximate and should be verified by intending purchasers

A work catalogued with the forename(s) and surname or recognised designation of an artist is, in our opinion, a work by the artist, e.g. NICHOLAS CHEVALIER

Attributed to NICHOLAS CHEVALIER... in our opinion a work of the period of the artist which may

be in whole or in part the work of the artist.

Studio of NICHOLAS CHEVALIER... in our opinion a work by an unknown hand, which may

have been executed in the studio of the artist.

Circle of NICHOLAS CHEVALIER... in our opinion a work from the period of the artist and

showing his influence.

Follower of NICHOLAS CHEVALIER... in our opinion a work executed in the style of the artist but

not necessarily by a pupil.

Manner of NICHOLAS CHEVALIER... in our opinion a work executed in the style of the artist but of

a later date.

After NICHOLAS CHEVALIER... in our opinion a copy of any date after a work by the artist.

Signed/inscribed/dated NICHOLAS CHEVALIER... in our opinion the work has been signed/inscribed/dated by

the artist.

Bears signature/inscription/dateNICHOLAS CHEVALIER... in our opinion the signature/inscription/date are probably

not by the. hand of the artist.

The addition of a question mark after any of the cataloguing terms in the above glossary indicates an element of doubt. The term 'ascribed to' may in certain cases be used to denote a traditional attribution based on style.A work catalogued as 'School' accompanied by the name of a place or country and a date mean that in our opinion the work wasexecuted at that time and in that location, e.g. Dutch School, circa 1700.All reference to signatures, inscriptions and dates refer to the present state of work, i.e. as at the time of inspection for the purpose of cataloguing.

JEWELLERYThe contents of any gemmological certificates accompanying lots in this sale are not guaranteed by Duke’s Auctioneers and we cannot be held responsible for any disagreement over the contents of the certificates after the sale, or for a retrospective change in opinion by the certificate issuer. All weights and measurements provided are approximate only.Prospective purchasers should assume that all coloured stones sold by Duke’s Auctioneers have been treated unless otherwise stated to the contrary in the catalogue description. Stones are commonly treated to enhance their colour and clarity. Sapphires and rubies are commonly heat treated and emeralds commonly oiled. Jade/jadeite is often bleached, polymer/resin filled or dyed. Please contact Duke’s for more clarification on treatment in individual lots.Items containing rubies or jade/jadeite of Burmese origin are not permitted for import by the USA.
