TONIGHT’S STARTING PITCHER

NOTABLE NUGGETS

CLEVELAND ROCKS: Perez spent seven seasons as a member of the Cleveland Indians, mostly serving as a left-handed setup man. In 338 career MLB relief appearances, Perez compiled a 3.64 ERA and registered three saves. He made a name for himself by generating groundballs at a 54.5% rate throughout his career, well above the MLB average of around 44%. SUPER EIGHT: Rafael Perez is one of eight players on the Ducks’ Opening Day roster with MLB experience, including five members of the pitching staff. Of the group of eight, Perez’ seven years of service time is eclipsed only by David Aardsma (nine seasons) and Nolan Reimold (eight seasons). COMEBACK KID: Perez joins the Ducks for the 2017 season after not pitch-ing professionally in 2016, though he did compete in the Dominican Winter League with Gigantes del Cibao. His last regular season action came in 2015 with Quintana Roo of the Mexican League. In addition to his time with Cleveland, the southpaw has spent time in the Minnesota Twins, Boston Red Sox, Texas Rang-ers and Seattle Mariners organizations.

PITCHER TIDBITS Perez was originally signed by the Cleveland Indians as a non-drafted free

agent on January 25, 2002. Made his MLB Debut on April 20, 2006, pitching a perfect inning of relief at

Camden Yards against the Baltimore Orioles, striking out Brian Roberts and Melvin Mora.

After posting a 1.78 ERA in 44 appearances during the 2007 season, ESPN analyst Peter Gammons called Perez, “Arguably the best left-handed reliever on the planet.”

Tied for second in the American league in appearances in 2011 (71), and finished in the top 10 in appearances in 2010 (t-10th, 70) and 2008 (t-6th, 73).

Perez was born in Santo Domingo, DR and has resided on Long Island since his days as a Cleveland Indian.

Was teammates with current Ducks pitcher Keith Couch on the 2013 Port-land Sea Dogs, while with the Boston organization.
