TONIGHT’S STARTING PITCHER

NOTABLE NUGGETS

LAST TIME OUT: Rafael Perez suffered his third consecutive defeat, falling to the Blue Crabs on the road last Saturday. The lefty gave up four runs on eight hits over five innings, tying a season-high with three walks while setting a season-high with eight strikeouts. He threw a total of 90 pitches in the outing, 59 of which were strikes. Perez gave up two first inning runs on a two-out wild pitch and an RBI single. He then allowed a two-run homer to Michael Snyder in the third. THE GOLDEN RATIO: With 57 strikeouts and just 16 walks allowed this season, Rafael Perez sports an excellent 3.56 strikeout-to-walk ratio. This beats his ca-reer average of 2.64 K:BB, and is the best mark he has posted since the 2013 season which he split between Rochester (AAA, MIN) and Portland (AA, BOS). BUMP IN THE ROAD: Perez has encountered a rocky road over his past three outings. He has combined to give up 11 runs in just 15 and one-third innings during that span (6.46 ERA). He’s allowed 32 hits and five walks while striking out 15 as well. In his nine starts prior to that, dating back to May 2, Perez had posted a 2.68 ERA, yielding 15 earned runs in 50 and one-third innings. CLEVELAND ROCKS: Perez spent seven seasons as a member of the Cleve-land Indians, mostly serving as a left-handed setup man. In 338 career MLB relief appearances, Perez compiled a 3.64 ERA and registered three saves. He made a name for himself by generating groundballs at a 54.5% rate throughout his ca-reer, well above the MLB average of around 44%.

PITCHER TIDBITS Perez was originally signed by the Cleveland Indians as a non-drafted free

agent on January 25, 2002.

Made his MLB Debut on April 20, 2006, pitching a perfect inning of relief at

Camden Yards against the Baltimore Orioles, striking out Brian Roberts and Melvin Mora.

After posting a 1.78 ERA in 44 appearances during the 2007 season, ESPN

analyst Peter Gammons called Perez, “Arguably the best left-handed reliever on the planet.”

Tied for second in the American league in appearances in 2011 (71), and

finished in the top 10 in 2010 (T-10th, 70) and 2008 (T-6th, 73).

Perez was born in Santo Domingo, DR and has resided on Long Island

since his days as a Cleveland Indian.
