TONIGHT’S STARTING PITCHER

NOTABLE NUGGETS

LAST TIME OUT: John Brownell recorded his third straight quality start in his last start, allowing three runs on five hits in six innings against the Lancaster Barn-stormers on July 4. The righty threw a season-high 117 pitches in the outing, and uncharacteristically did not display his trademark command, walking three and striking out only four. That was more than good enough to get the win, however, as the Ducks offense exploded for a 9-3 Independence Day victory. IN THE RECORD BOOKS: The veteran Brownell is the Long Island Ducks all-time franchise leader in wins (52), games started (123), innings pitched (816.2), and strikeouts (621). Additionally, Brownell is the single-season Ducks record holder for strikeouts (147, 2016), innings pitched (202.0, 2014), complete games (7, 2013), and games started (29, 2014). SENIOR STAFF MEMBER: Entering his fifth full season with the Ducks and sixth season with the club overall in 2017, Brownell is the longest-tenured Ducks pitcher. After Brownell, the next-longest-tenured Ducks hurlers are Patrick Crider and Amalio Diaz, each entering their third seasons with the team. The longest-tenured member of the team overall is outfielder and bench coach Lew Ford, who is beginning his eighth season with the Flock in 2017.

PITCHER TIDBITS

Brownell was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 27th round of the

2006 MLB Amateur Draft out of the University of Oklahoma.

Took the loss in relief in Game 3 of the 2006 Houston Super Regional

against Rice, his only loss of his senior season with the Sooners.

Spent one season pitching for the Batavia Muckdogs of the New York-Penn

League, where worked 37.0 innings in 19 appearances, including one start.

Was originally drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 47th round of the 2004

MLB Amateur Draft while playing for Butler County Community College in Kansas, but did not sign.

Before coming to the Ducks, Brownell spent five years in independent base-

ball, including two seasons with Kalamazoo of the Frontier League (2007-2008), one year with Lake County of the Northern League (2009), and two years with Grand Prairie of the American Association (2011-2012).
