Greetings! As Mayor, and on behalf of the 58,000 residents of Dubuque, I thank you for your interest in Iowa’s first city … our “Masterpiece on the Mississippi!”

Dubuque is blessed with a hardworking, skilled and educated workforce, supported by numerous quality private and public institutions of higher learning. We promote citizen involvement and community engagement in developing our City’s vision and priorities which is why Dubuque has been recognized among the top cities in the Midwest to raise a family, have a meaningful career, start or grow a business, and enjoy life!

Dubuque is considered the “birthplace of Iowa” and features a rich history, interesting architecture, and abundant natural beauty. In addition to excellent accommodations and conference settings, Dubuque features the Port of Dubuque’s breathtaking riverwalk along the Mississippi, award-winning restaurants, charming shops, art and river history museums, elegant turn-of-the-century homes, and many other attractions.

Since 2006, Dubuque has become a leader in the practical application of sustainability principles represented in the citizen-developed, City Council-adopted, and community-supported initiative known as “Sustainable Dubuque.” This focus offers a balanced approach to life quality in the areas of economic prosperity, environmental integrity, and social/cultural vibrancy (see www.sustainabledubuque.org). “Smarter Sustainable Dubuque,” our collaboration with IBM Research to become IBM’s first “smart city” in North America, has allowed us to share our story around the nation and the world. In Fall 2014, the Intelligent Community Forum named Dubuque as one of just five U.S. cities named the world’s “Smart21 Communities” of 2015. In August, SmartAsset.com named Dubuque one of the 10 Best American Cities to Work in Technology. Other important recognitions stemming from our public/private partnerships have resulted in the coveted Outstanding Tourism Community of the Year award from the State of Iowa and the 2013 All-America City designation by the National Civic League, the third time in six years! Our community was honored to be named one of the 2013 10 Great Places to Live by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance and one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People five times by the America’s Promise Alliance. In 2010, Forbes recognized Dubuque as the Best Small City to Raise a Family, and in 2008 the U.S. Conference of Mayors selected

Dubuque as the Most Livable Small City in the nation!

I invite you to visit Dubuque soon and enjoy all the amenities our All-America City has to share, including our free trolley service (Memorial Day weekend through October)!

Sincerely,

Mayor Roy D. Buol

Along the River...what

to do

The Mississippi River has influenced the heritage and make up of Dubuque's vibrant culture. Thanks to its location along the

world's fourth longest river,

Dubuque's economy has been

heavily influenced by the waterway.

Founder Julien Dubuque was the

first permanent settler to the area. He

quickly established relationships with

the Mesquakie Indian Tribe which led

to a growing trade market. Once the

area was chartered in 1837, industry

grew rapidly. While initially known

for it's fur trading and lead mining,

settlers brought new business, such

as button making, boat construction

and millworking, along the river.

At the turn of the century,

Dubuque's Millwork District was

booming. Logs that had been floated

down the Mississippi River were

transformed by master craftsman at

dozens of companies. Today, these

historic warehouses have been given

new life with an expansive renovation

project. The CARADCO building

is home to a variety of businesses

including retail, art galleries and

more.

Dubuque's connection to the river

is evident when you visit the Port of

Dubuque. The $400 million riverfront

revitalization has gained national

recognition. Most recently, Dubuque

was named fourth Best American

Riverfront in USA Today's 10Best.com

poll.. Dubuque ranked in the top ten

with communities like Wilmington,

NC; Spokane, WA; and Savannah, GA.

French Canadian fur trader, Julien Dubuque becomes the area's first permanent settler.

Thanks to the Black Hawk Purchase Treaty, Dubuque is open for settlement. By 1837, the area was known as

Dubuque, named after it's founder, Julien Dubuque.

Drawing of Julien Dubuque

Founder Julien DubuqueThe first permanent settler to Dubuque was a French-Canadian fur trader, Julien Dubuque. He befriended the Mesquakie Indians who occupied the region at the time. After developing close relationships with the Mesquakie, Julien was shown and permitted to mine the many lead deposits. He named the area Mines of Spain, and successfully operated it until his death in 1810. Under the Black Hawk Purchase Treaty in 1833, the United States Government opened the area up for settlement. It came to be known as Dubuque when it was chartered in 1837.

Shot TowerDubuque’s Shot Tower was built in 1856 to efficiently produce lead shots for the military. Molten lead was poured through a grate at the top of the tower. Then, the relatively uniform drops that fell from the grate would land in the water below which cooled the lead into its solid state. The tower has been burned (interior only), hit by a train, repaired and renovated to its current state.

As Iowa’s oldest city, Dubuque has a lot to offer. Here are some unique historical facts & folklore to aid you on your next visit to the area.

Is this heaven? No, it's Iowa. This catch phrase got it's fame from the Academy Award nominated film,

Field of Dreams, primarily shot in Dyersville, Iowa.

Today, Dubuque is home to nearly 60,000 residents and has been

recognized nationally for it's redevelopment and

reinvention.

80 years after Dubuque's death in 1810, the Julien Dubuque Monument was erected. Today, this 29 foot high, 12 foot

in diameter stone structure is still visible to the public at the Mines of Spain.

The romanesque style brew-house, Dubuque Star Brewery, was built in what is now the Port of Dubuque.

Dubuque was named fourth Best American Riverfront by readers of USA Today's 10Best.com.

Fenelon Place ElevatorCapone Suite at the

Hotel Julien Dubuque Star Brewery Complex

Fenelon Place ElevatorDubuque Iowa, circa 1882, was an hour and a half town. Over the lunch hour, everything shut down for an hour and a half. Unfortunately for Mr. J. K. Graves, the route to his house required a half hour buggy ride around the bluff. He decided to build a cable car to cut down on his commute. The original cable car was hauled up and down on two rails by a hemp rope, and housed a coal-fired steam engine boiler. After the cable car burned down twice, ten neighbors founded the Fenelon Place Elevator Company. This group eventually upgraded the motor, added a turnstile and replaced the hemp rope with steel cable. In 1977, the cable cars were completely rebuilt.

Hotel Julien DubuqueThis hotel has hosted many famous guests but none as notorious as Chicago gangster, Al Capone. When “things were too hot to handle” in Chicago, it is legend that Al Capone would hide out at this historic hotel. He reportedly made use of a nearby underground garage to hide his cars and further conceal his presence in Dubuque. Some say he even owned the hotel at one point. Today, you can live like this prohibition-era gangster by staying in the Capone Suite. Tucked away in a private area of the hotel, this suite offers a vintage theme that is rich with “Old Hollywood glamour.”

Historic Star

Brewery Complex

Iowa’s oldest brewery was founded by the Rhomberg family in 1898. The five-story brick brew house was forced to close, along with other breweries, with the beginning of Prohibition & reopened in 1933 with its repeal.

The brewery changed hands several more times before being acquired by the City of Dubuque and renovated as part of the America’s River Project in the early 2000s.

Today, the Star Brewery Complex features an historical display on its ground floor. Stone Cliff Winery also operates on the ground floor with an expanded winery & tasting center.

Arts + Culturewhat

to do

Dubuque's culture is tightly woven within its roots as a historic Mississippi River community. From the locations that festivals and

exhibits are held, to the inspiration

that they draw from, Dubuque's arts &

culture has a rich history.

Situated along the banks of the

Mississippi River lies a

one-of-a-kind outdoor art exhibit.

Since it's start in 2006, the annual Art

on the River has featured 87 amazing

public art works from national and

international artists. Come morning,

day, or night to experience this exhibit

at its riverside location.

The Mighty Mississippi was a major

thoroughfare for transporting logs to

Dubuque's once booming millwork

industry and the warehouses

that housed companies like Carr,

Ryder, & Adams Collier Company.

This building, now known as the

CARADCO Building, was the first

project in the revitalization of the

historic millwork district. Spanning

an entire city block, this historic

warehouse is now home to retailers,

Dubuque Food Co-op, Inspire Cafe,

Studio Works, and Gallery C, a

contemporary art gallery that pushes

the boundaries of the arts experience

in Dubuque.

Another fixture of this historic

section of Dubuque is the annual

event, Voices from the Warehouse

District. Since its initial showing in

2005, this cultural experience has

received rave reviews from artists,

media and attendees. Combining

agritourismfarm fresh

One look at the vast landscape of

rolling farms, and you’ll understand

why so many songs, books, and

movies have found inspiration in this

part of the country.

According to the United States

Department of Agriculture, Iowa is

2nd in top agricultural producing

states. In the Dubuque area you’ll

find that agritourism is alive, thriving,

and well worth the adventure.

Discover the families who help feed America, the million dollar sunsets, & the small town values that make visiting this area so special.

Farmers from all over the Midwest

offer their fresh picked vegetables,

homemade jams, oven baked pies

& other farm fresh items to one of

two Farmers' Markets. From May to

October, vendors surround City Hall

and the Upper Main Street District at

the Dubuque Farmers' Market. When

the weather turns cooler, Winter

Farmers' Market heads indoors to the

Colt Center to include recent harvests

& hand-made goods.

From Iowa's only organic vineyard to a third generation orchard, experience the farm like never before.

The Dubuque

Food Co-Op

is the area's first

community-owned,

natural, organic and

local food store. While the store

is membership driven, anyone is

welcome to shop. Vendors who

provide products to the store are

located within 100 miles to market.

Situated in the beautifully restored

Historic Warehouse District, the

Dubuque Food Co-Op helps to

support the local agricultural

community while bringing awareness

to sourcing local food.

There is no shortage of wineries in

the Dubuque area, each offering

unique experiences for their guests.

At Crimson Sunset Vineyards in

Cascade, Iowa, you can sip on wine

crafted from Iowa's only organic

vineyard. This facility is 100% solar

and wind powered and owned by

husband & wife, Kevin & Lisa Miller.

Grapes are hand-picked and placed

into lugs where they are sorted.

From there the grapes are put

into a distemper where the stems

are removed so only the grape

remains. After this process, they are

transported into bins where grapes

meant for red wines will ferment

in the bins, on the skins. Grapes for

white wine are pressed out and head

into fermentation tanks. From the

vine, to the glass, these locally grown

wines are sold at the winery and

area stores.

Tour the greenhouses and

hydroponic fodder systems at

FarmTek in Dyersville, Iowa. Offering

tours Mondays, Wednesdays, &

Fridays at 10:00 am & 2:00 pm,

greenhouse staff will introduce you

to the hydroponic fodder growing

system. This system allows farmers

to grow economical and renewable

fodder (food given to animals

rather than the food they forage for

themselves) in a rapid amount of

time. The process produces high

quality, nutrient rich fodder each day

with a 7 day growing cycle.

In the fall, take a trip to the

third-generation, family-owned,

Czipar’s Apple Orchard. In 1940, the

Czipar family developed the orchard

that has been handed down through

two generations. Situated on a bluff

with rolling hills and a spectacular

view, the orchard offers a variety of

apples, apple cider donuts and other

home grown treats.
