Hard to believe 2015 is just around the
corner, but at this stage it does not matter
what year it is, the focus as always is the
countdown to March.
It is encouraging to see growth in our
membership this year. I think the work
members of the committee have done on
the website has greatly helped the Asso-
ciation. Our treasurer , Mr. Des Taylor,
hopes to report a further improvement in
our finances from previous years at our
AGM, but there is still more to do in
2015.
Well done to the Irish Youths team for
the Silver medal, fishing in Grafham
Waters, England in August. DTAA juve-
nile members Robert Farrington and Ow-
en O’Driscoll were on the Irish team.
Particularly well done to Owen who was
2nd Irish rod and 6th overall and he will
be vice captain of the team in 2015.
Well done to the DTAA Leinster Shield
team who took home first prize again this
year. First place was secured thanks to
two early fish caught by DTAA Vice
President, David Canning. It was good
to see catch and release rules being tried
out but I expect they will need to be re-
viewed again. On the day I understand
storing trout in tanks proved difficult and
two trout in the same tank did not seem
feasible.
Unfortunately the DTAA boat was not
available in Blessington for most of this
year. Early in the season the boat was
very badly damaged against rocks at
Russellstown and had to be removed

from the water. The committee looked
into alternative arrangements with a local
boat hire company but it seems to be
working out quite expensive. The decision
as to whether we relocate a boat in Bless-
ington is being reviewed by the Commit-
tee. From the booking log records the boat
seems to have had limited use over the
last few years.
The Lough Owel boat was also damaged
during the year and arrangements are be-
ing made to repair it over the winter sea-
son.
Both the Blessington boat and the Lough
Owel boat appear to have been damaged
by members not tying up the boats secure-
ly following use. It is very frustrating
when repairs are carried out for damage to
reoccur by member’s carelessness. I
would ask all members when returning
club boats to tie them up securely, allow-
ing for changes in the water level that can
occur. At least two tyres should be placed
each side of the boat to prevent the hull of
the boat getting damaged on stones with
movement from waves.
Thank you to Paul Delaney and David
Canning for giving the
Lough Lene boat a well needed sand
down and paint.
After the season closed this year we were
contacted by Dublin City Council staff in
relation to our access to Bohernabreena
reservoir. Access remains available to all
our members but vehicle access is limited
to members who have registered their
vehicles and mobile phone numbers. The
current issue is too many of our members
are registered and not all are using the
gates. Dublin City Council need to limit
the overall numbers registered which in-
cludes residents, DCC staff and of course
anglers. They need to limit the DTAA
allocation to 20 members. The committee
are considering how this will be managed
and there will be further discussion with
members at the AGM.
Another quite serious issue has arisen in
relation to our fishing at Celbridge &
Straffan where Joe Leonard no longer is
allowing DTAA members park or access
to the river on his land. The committee is
looking into alternative arrangements here
but until further notice I would ask mem-
bers to adhere to Mr. Leonard's wishes
and not to use his lands for access.
It was great to attend this years Elvery
Cup held for the first time in Southern
County Fishery, Carlow. Thank you to
Gerry Heaslip for organizing. Plenty of
fish were showing throughout the day but
difficult to tempt. I would be interested in
hearing feedback in relation to this as a
venue for future Elvery cup competitions.
We wish all the best to Orla Walsh who is
the new secretary of Conn & Cullen An-
glers. Early reports from Conn looked
promising with Sean Goulding landing a
fantastic 7.5lb. fish early in the season.
Sean went on to show us how to do it with
a fantastic bag at the Pratt Cup. More of
that later in the report.
Well done to our former president John
Harrington at this years World Cup com-
petition at Lough Mask. John took home
second prize at the event which is a fan-
tastic achievement considering the num-
ber of anglers taking part.
Thank you to all members of the commit-
tee for sharing the workload again this
year. Particularly our President, HLM
Ronnie Miley for his continued work for
DTAA including retaining the role of
Membership Secretary. Also Competi-
tions Secretary, Fran Nugent for his tire-
less work throughout the year. The Asso-
ciation has a lot to thank these two men
for.

Report from Dermot Flynn
Once again the fishing season has flown
by. It seems such a short time since the
1st March when we were all looking
forward to wetting our lines and trying
out our new flies and hopefully catching
the fish of a lifetime.
My first outing was to Lough Lene on
the 3rd March, with my fishing buddy
Frank Mc Dougall. We started in the
shallows around the big island, but noth-
ing was showing or taking either. We
decided to move up to the area known as
“THE CUT” we fished around the swim-
ming area for a good while before we
started to hit fish. Boy when the fish
(rainbows) started to hit us they were
really good fish averaging around 11/2
lb.to 2 lb. Most of the takes were arm
wrenching with the fish taking off like
trains, which at the time the use of 10lb.
breaking strain fluorocarbon as a leader
was a good choice. When lunchtime
came we were glad of the break. After
lunch we went back to the same spot. At
first we thought the fish had gone off the
take (which had happened) but we hung
around the same area and without fail the
sport resumed. We fished till about four
o clock with no signs of the fish stop-
ping. It was a great start to the season for
both of us. We went back a couple of
weeks later to the same spot but found
the fishing little bit harder. We did catch
fish but we had to work harder to find
them.” I guess they were fresh stockies”
so they had spread out, and probably got
a lot cuter in the meantime. We had a
few more outings to Lough Lene
throughout the season and always had
good fishing. The stocking programme
on Lene is second to none with both
rainbows and browns in great condition
being stocked.
BOHERNABREENA.
Early in March I made my fist trip to this
venue on a cold and blustery day. The
lower lake was at a reasonable height
and myself and Frank were able to move
around and try to locate some fish. We
both caught a couple of small browns.
We had to wait a few more weeks before
we caught a rainbow. It was very notice-
able that the condition of the fish was
not very good. My guess was it did not
get much food during the winter. The
browns on the other hand (although
smaller) seemed to fare much better.
Later the lake was very high and fishing
was confined to fishing off the dam, but
on days when the wind was favourable
the fishing was good and the rainbows
that were overwintered seemed to
have put on condition. We came
to the conclusion it was the buzzer
feeding. There was quite a lot of
buzzers hatching all around the
lake. A lot of fish were rising up
along the middle of the lake
where the river runs through
which was nice to see but too far
away to be of any use to a fly
fisherman. "Such is life"
CLANE.
Clane never fails to give good
fishing, especially in the Spring
before the weeds start to grow.
This year was no exception. I al-
ways start off using small wets,
nymphs and spiders to be exact.
Notably my favourites for this
venue, greenwells spider size 14
and 16s partridge and orange par-
tridge and yellow same sizes. Gold
ribbed hares ear and pheasant tail
nymphs. The grhe sometimes has a gold
head and is useful on the deeper pools.
The wets mostly catch the smaller fish
but now and again a nice big one comes
along, but for sport it’s a great way to
have fun. While fishing wets this season
it was very gratifying to hook lots of
small salmon parr. It shows that at least
some salmon are getting up the river to
spawn. Later the dry fly comes into its
own when the blue winged olives hatch
it’s then time to use the dries.
Imitations I use are greenwells glory,
blue winged olive dry, F flies with olive
bodies and sometimes with maroon or
claret bodies. Later the sedges start and
the evening fishing is probably the
best time for these. The imitations are
too numerous to mention, but I really
like the deer hair sedge with a brown
body. Very easy to tie and in size 16 or
18 can on any evening pull up a big fish
or two.
BLESSINGTON
I did not travel to Blessington this year
until two weeks after the first stocking.
To be exact. I had heard through the
grapevine it was fishing well. So once
again myself and Frank took off on a
Sunday morning to see for ourselves and
it did not disappoint. We started off just
chucking out dabblers nothing happened
for a while and we began to doubt our
information, but after moving along the
shore we found fish and as the story goes
that’s when the fun started. We caught
lots of fish (browns) and these were
good quality fish at about 1 1/2 lb. we
returned a couple of weeks later and
found the fish had dispersed but were
still able to catch one or two. I did not
get back to Blessington until September
and hoped all the fish had not disap-
peared, but to my delight there were still
some taking. But it took a lot of walking
before I caught one. It was heartening to
find that even late into September the
fish were still catchable. (all of the fish
were returned).
UPPER LIFFEY BALLYWARD
Over the years I always started my sea-
son on this stretch of the river, but re-
cently I went to other places to start my
season. This year I tried it in late April.
Down river from the bridge I failed to
get even one offer. So I went upriver to
try our own private section. I noticed
evidence of bait fishing having taken
place. Gladly it did not seem to affect the
fishing as there were fish rising all along
the slow stretch .A rise of BWO’s was
taking place. Immediately I put on a bwo
dry imitation and proceeded to catch fish
after fish, lots of small ones, but overall
there were six fish between nine and
eleven inches. It just goes to prove that
being in the right place at the right time
is so important. (It was 11 o clock on a
Sunday morning and it lasted for about
45 minutes then it stopped. And for love
or money I couldn’t move another fish).
If I had arrived at the river an hour later I
would have been convinced the river
was devoid of fish. Once again all the
fish were returned.
Once gain Cathal I leave with this
thought, “Timing is everything”

My fishing year never finishes without
the thoughts of flies that worked for me,
the different natural flies I observed dur-
ing the season and the nature and scenery
around me. It makes me feel we have one
of the best pastimes of all. In all this I
like to observe where wild flowers in-
sects and migratory birds fit in with our
hobby as they flower, arrive and go
though the fishing season. Like garlic
mustard, wild garlic signals the arrival of
the duck fly, cuckoo flower and swift are
just ahead of the mayfly. I know as I
write this we have four to five
months to wait.
With this in mind I repair and
clean my rods and reels and
of course tie my selection of
flies for river and lake. I usu-
ally start tying flies for the
duck fly season which in-
cludes Black Pennell, Bibbio,
Peter Ross, Blae and black
sizes 10,12,14. Followed by
March Brown, Greenwell’s
glory, Hawthorn fly, Endrick
spider, Dabblers followed by
Mayflies, Daddy long legs
and Damsel nymphs and vari-
ous sedges (Black, G.Peter,
Brown). On the rivers I find
wet flies like Greenwell’s
glory, March brown, Pheasant
tail nymph moving on to dry
flies dark olives, Black gnat,
Black midge, Green midge, small may-
flies, Yellow sally, Blue winged olive,
Devaux sedge, Coachman, Sherry spin-
ner sizes 12-16.
I mainly fished lakes Lene, Owel, Corrib
and Mask starting with Lane and Owel
the Duck fly during April having good
success, moving on to the Corrib for the
Mayfly season using Damsel nymph and
wet and dry mayflies and in evenings
using spent may flies and sedges with
good success. As the summer moved on
the daddy and brown sedge worked on
most days and evenings in which most
days were reasonably warm.
My best days fishing came during the
Lough Mask World Cup when luck came
my way in winning one of the prizes. The
day was made for me by many people
mainly the boatman Pat Smith, and my
fishing partner who made the day so en-
joyable with chat and shared observation.
Also the good advice on flies and tactics
from my fishing friends Vincent and No-
el. The main flies used were brown
sedge, Invicta, and daddy long legs.
Looking forward to season 2015 with the
experiences of the past to try again and
hoping for some luck again to come my
way and yours.
Tight lines and take
care on the water….. John Harrington, DTAA
John Harrington's
2014 Fishing Season
John Harrington does not know his own strength, this is a still from a video shot where
John came across a rotten tree while doing survey along the Liffey
Report from HLM Peter
Brown
The following is a summary of my season
on the Liffey this year for what it’s worth!
Severe winter floods left the river well
scoured and a lot of gravel shifted, which
must have destroyed a lot of invertebrate
life in our river. There was hardly any rise
to fly until late April, when a modest
hatch of Iron Blues occurred. I had a few
trout in deep-fished nymphs before this.
In late April and up to mid-May there
were a good number of Black Gnats on
the water, giving some dry fishing at mid-
day. I caught and returned a fair number
of trout up to 14oz but mostly disappoint-
ingly small.
In June and July there was quite a good
evening of fishing at dusk, a very late rise
to B.W.O. and sedges and I had good
numbers of fish, again rather small at HLM Peter Brown informing the members of his concerns regarding
Ivermecton at last years AGM
5
Clane and Ferris. Odd trout up to 1lb
in weight. The one exception was a 3lb
8 ½ oz. fish taken on a size 16 dry fly
near Leixlip, this is the biggest Liffey
trout I have caught since 1999.
The evening rise died off at the end of
July. The river remained low and clear
up to early September. I continued to
catch a few fish until the end of the
season.
The river appears to have a good stock
of trout of much smaller average size
than before, for example in 2009 I
hooked 23 trout over 1lb in weight in
the season, this year only 2! But I have
to admit that I am not the angler I used
to be now in my 83rd year.
I submitted a lot of scales to I.F.I. for
the study of the genetics of Liffey
Trout.
In summary I had a pleasant season;
fly-life is still disappointing. The river
becomes very low in summer and I
think the E.S.B should let a little more
compensation water down. I hope I
will still be able to fish next year.
Best wishes, Peter
Peter Brown HLM
Membership
Report 2014: I am glad to report
that, in spite of the
ever increasing bur-
den of taxation,
membership numbers
have not suffered.
While acknowledg-
ing that membership
numbers have not
suffered, we did, un-
fortunately, loose
thirty five members
who did not renew
their memberships in
2014. Recruitment of
new members was sufficient to end
the year with six more adult members
compared to 2013. Juvenile member-
ship was eight more than in 2013.
Overall, at the end of 2014, adult
membership stood at 250 and juvenile
membership at sixty five.
As I explained in previous reports,
adult membership is now limited to
three hundred. A membership limit of
two hundred and fifty was introduced
some years ago when complaints
were received from landowners re-
garding access to land being blocked
by anglers parking inappropriately.
Membership, which had reached in
excess of four hundred, gradually
reduced to the two hundred and fifty
limit and remained at that figure for
some years. A list of about forty pro-
spective members, waiting for vacan-
cies to arise, built up, and the commit-
tee decided to increase the limit, ini-
tially to two hundred and seventy five
and later to three hundred where it
remains to this day. Paid up member-
ship remained at around the three
hundred mark for some time until the
onset of the recession in 2008, after
which it suffered a steady decline
year by year. Let’s hope that 2014
marked a beginning of a recovery to
full membership.
I would ask that, if you have fishing
friends, who are not already members,
encourage them to apply for member-
ship while there are vacancies still
available.
I wish you all a very Happy New
Year and tight lines for 2015 and be-
yond.
Ronnie Miley HLM, Member-
ship Secretary. President.
Fly Tying Evenings
Great to see the Fly Tying evenings started up again
thanks to John O Neill, at the new venue at St Annes
GAA clubhouse arranged by Gerry Heaslip.
They are being held generally monthly between October
and February. It a great opportunity to catch up with
friends and share tips and jokes with each other.
I was very disappointed to miss the evening dedicated to
Lough Conn flies, I will have some catching up to do.
Conn & Cullen anglers better watch out next year. Mem-
bers interested should indicate it on their membership
renewal form or contact John O Neill on 0876316987 for
further information.

Sixteen members
travelled west, to
Crossmolina on the
2nd of May for a
weekend of friend-
ship and fishing on
Lough Conn in Co
Mayo. This was the
42nd year of these
memorable occa-
sions. In every one
of those years
friendships have
blossomed and been
sustained and
whereas, the spirit
of competition in
the fishing is still a
feature, it does not
override the sheer enjoyment of the
occasion. This enjoyment has been
heightened by the quality of the wel-
come extended to us on each visit by
the members of the Lough Conn and
Cullin Anglers’ Association. As I have
explained, in previous reports, a mem-
ber of DTAA fishes with a member of
the Lough Conn and Cullin club each
day. The members of the home team,
very kindly, take us out in their boats
free of charge on the day of the Dublin
Bowl. In return, we bring prizes for the
fishing and treat our hosts to dinner in
the evening after the fishing. There is a
modest charge for the fishing and meal
on Sunday. Overall, it is a great occa-
sion, and, catch fish or not, you will not
be disappointed with the enjoyment of
the weekend. So, if you have not taken
part before, think seriously about it for
2015.
The fishing took place on Saturday and
Sunday, the 3rd and 4th of May. The
Dublin Bowl competition which was
held on Saturday the 3rd May, was,
again, won by the home club with
13,110 points to Dublin’s 9,340. This
competition was run on a catch, meas-
ure and release basis, and points award-
ed accordingly.
Notable catches were, for the first ten
places:
Home team:- Padraig Traynor, 1st 4
fish for 2020 points: John McNeely,
2nd, 5 fish for 1,960 points, Michael
Monaghan, 3rd, 4 fish for 1,780 points:
Peter Roche, 4th, 5 fish for 1,550
points. Joe Quinn, 6th, 4 fish for 1,260
points.
Dublin team: Gary Coakley, 5th, 3 fish
for 1,320 points: Cathal McDonnell,
7th, 4 fish for 1, 230 points: Raymond
O’Neill, 8th, 4 fish for 1,180 points:
Noel O’Neill, 9th, 3 fish for 1,030
points, Jim Keeshan, 10th, 3 fish for
940 points.
The fishing on Sunday the 4th was for
the Pratt Cup. This competition is not
confined to the members of the two
clubs and is not a team competition.
The fishing was not as lively as for the
Dublin Bowl on the previous day and
fish were not as numerous. The weigh-
in was as normal and the result decided
on weight.
The results, to 5th place, were as fol-
lows: 1st, Sean Goulding, 3 fish for
3.535 Kgs.: 2nd Noel Shiels, 2 fish for
2.18 Kgs.: 3rd, Billy McGhee, 3 fish for
1.24 Kgs.: 4th, Justin Clarke, 2 fish for
1.22 Kgs.: 5th John O’Neill, 2 fish for
1.17 Kgs.
In conclusion, thanks again to the offic-
ers and members of the Lough Conn
and Cullin Anglers’ Association. I
would like to pay tribute to Mr. Enda
Hiney and his staff for the quality of the
meals served each evening.
Ronnie Miley,
HLM, Membership Secretary &
President.

COMPETITION REVIEW 2014 The Pasker Cup was held on Lough Owel on Saturday the
12th April. We had 28 anglers taking part and they weighed in
30 trout between them. The winner with 3 trout for 4.35lbs was
Tony Mc Gratten , second with 3 trout was Mick O Toole and
3rd also with 3 trout was Dave Canning.
The Youth National Final was held on Lough Owel on the
26th April this year . DTAA had 3 entries in this competition
and they all managed to catch fish. Well done to Robert Far-
rington with 2 fish , Owen O Driscoll with 3 fish and just out-
side the prizes , but the success story of the day has to go to
Almha Mc Donnell who had 2 fish one of them measuring an
incredible 50 cm and was long enough for Almha to win a
prize for the longest fish .
The Leinster Championships were fished on Lough Owel on
May 11th this year. Well done to Dave Canning with 8 fish and
Cathal Mc Donnell with 7 fish. They joined fellow DTAA
member Gerry Heaslip on the Leinster team to fish in the in-
terpro on Lough Lene in August of this year .
The National Final was fished on Lough Leane Killarney on
the 14th June. The DTAA had six members entered for this
competition all hoping to win a place on the 2015 Irish team.
With temperatures in the mid 20s, bright sunshine and little or
no wind fishing was always going to be challenging. Once
again it was down to Gerry Heaslip to fly the flag for Dublin.
Gerry weighed in three nice fish giving him 12th place overall
and 2nd sub on the 2015 International Team. Well done to the
other DTAA mem-
bers who took part
Tom Hipwell, Eoin
Dunne, John O Neill,
Dave Canning and
Fran Nugent.
The LM Byrne Cup was held on Lough
Lene on the 25th
May. Twenty three anglers attended this competition and they
were all hoping to land one of the big rainbows for which
Lough Lene is renowned. Paul O’ Brien was the eventual win-
ner with a cracking trout weighing 3.515lbs. Paul was fishing
with his boat partner Eoin Dunne in the area known as “The
Cut” when he landed the trout. They were fishing with small
dry shuttlecocks and managed to catch plenty of trout between
them. Second place with a trout of 3.35 lbs. was Fran Nugent
and Third with 2.73 lbs. was Dave Canning .
Well done to Terry Walsh who has won the Anna Livia Tro-
phy for the second year in a row. Terry had 2 fish weigh-
ing 2.52lbs , also for the second year running Richard Duggan
just missed out on the top spot with 2 fish for 2.32lbs. Eoin
Dunne was the only angler to catch 3 fish on the night and they
weighed 2.185lbs and gave him third place overall.
The DTAA had two junior members on The Youth Irish Team
in 2014. They are Robert Farrington who won the Youth Na-
tional Final in 2013 and Owen O Driscoll.
The ITFFA Leinster Shield was held on 23rd August on
Lough Derravaragh. There were several clubs from Leinster
entering four man teams to win this prestigious shield. The
DTAA have been very successful in this competition in the past
and this year was no exception. It was left down to the DTAA
captain, Dave Canning, to produce the winning bag. It was
Dave’s first time to fish this very challenging lake but that did-
n’t deter him as he had two cracking fish on his first drift of the
day. Dave’s total catch of 3lb 9ozs was enough to secure the
shield for DTAA for the fourth time in eight
years. Congratulations to Dave and his team members, Gary
Coakley, Donal Raftery and Fran Nugent and here’s hoping that
the DTAA can win it again this year.
The Ryder Cup was fished in Bohernabreena on 31st August.
First place was Gary Coakley with a fish weighing 1.245lbs,
second was Bobby Woods .48lbs and third Jim Keeshan .28lbs.
Best Junior Robert Farrington.
The National Qualifier for the 2015 National Final took place
on the 20 September this year on Lough Owel. The weather
conditions varied from near perfect to blazing sunshine and
light winds which made fishing quite difficult at times. The
DTAA still managed to secure six places over the 2lb 5oz cut-
off to fish Lough Melvin in next year’s National Final. Gerry
Juvenile Outing 2014 Another Great Success We held our annual junior outing at Southern county fishery Garryhill on the 13th of
April. 28 juniors landed well in excess of 100 trout between them . First place went to
Ben O Brien with a trout measuring 37cm, The winner on the lower lake with
a fantastic trout of 54cm was Arlo Graham and the winner of bait section
was Christopher Duffy. All Juniors had a great day and everyone received a prize for
their efforts. Thanks to Pat and Mary from Cleeres Angling and to Dave from
Southside Angling for giving us some prizes and also to Ann and pat of Southern Coun-
ty Fishery for looking after us for the day.

I appeal to members to let me have their Membership
Renewal Form with payment of their annual sub as soon
as they can after the AGM, or, even before it, if possible.
This will help me to compile the statement of fish caught
and make the necessary return to the IFI in good time.
Thank you, Membership Secretary
The committee wish to thank all the members who helped in various ways
during the year and wish all the members a prosperous and peaceful 2015
and many fishing outings with tight lines. The DTAA Committee
