Bilal, introduce yourself, to the reggae fans out there who don’t know you yet Well, I am Bilal and me was brought up in Jamaice but wasn’t born there. I’m a serious person, I like to read and try to uplift the nation with my lyrics by thinking hard and positive only. When did you start your music career? I started my music career professionally in 2006 but I have always been writing muic. At the age of 10, I started writing music from the inspiration of my older brother, who also sings and writes his own music. What was you first single? My first single is ‘They don’t care’. it was produced by fifth ele- ment, 2006. Were you in fluenced by any other artist? You sound like a collie buddz and a bit like Jah cure. Yes, I’m influenced by other artists like Bob Marley, I Wayne, Siz- zla and Lutan Fyah. I listen to a variety of music and I get inspired once a message is there. Your song ‘they don’t care’ tell me the meaning of the song, what message are you trying to portray? Well, it is about the system, how they make it so hard for us, with their corrupt ways. Just to show the world who are interested in my music as an uplifting message to make here a bette place. whats a typical day like for you nowadays? I wake up and give thanks for life. I then hit the studio un- til late, I play football and I train in my spare time. Like most reggae artists, do you use original riddims or classic riddims? I approach most riddims in the same manner.I listen to the riddim, find a melody then write what the riddim tells me to, so basically the riddims tells me what to write. Where do you see yourself in a few years time? I see myself, writing more and more songs for people which includes a perfect message for inspiration of the na- tion. If you never became a singer, what career path would you of followed? I don’t really see myself as not being a singer, but I did want to be a fireman, but music is the one for me, nothing else.
