Veterans Day AssignmentWhat is Veterans Day?Veterans Day is an official United States holiday that honors people who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, also known as veterans. It is a federal holiday that is observed on November 11. It coincides with other holidays such as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other parts of the world and also mark the anniversary of the end of World War I. (Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect.)

Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day; Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving.

Assignment Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to learn more about American memorials.

Option #1 (if you are going on the Washington DC trip):Research one of the memorials you will be visiting when you travel to the east coast this spring. (See Ms. Lopez or your itinerary for a list of memorials you’ll be visiting.)

Option #2 (if you are NOT going on the Washington DC trip):Research an American memorial or museum from the list below:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_memorials

Option #3 (if you have visited an American memorial): Research an America memorial you have visited in the past.

Assignment Specifics:Your assignment is to write a list of 15 things about an American memorial of your choosing. All listed information must be thorough, well written, and grammatically correct. Besides the thoughtful and interesting facts you will research and evaluate, your list must include:

name of the designer opening date symbolism/deeper meaning of the memorial what major event the memorial is commemorating any annual customs, activities, or events that take place at the memorial

Please title your piece with the name and location of the memorial (see below and example) and include a picture (with caption) of the memorial.

This picture was taken from the ferry boat that we took from the Pearl Harbor Theater to the USS Arizona memorial. It was a strikingly

silent boat ride, as we had just finished watching a 35-minute documentary

about Pearl Harbor and WWII; and we knew we were entering hallowed seas.
