This fully-automated facility is linked directly to the adjacent 30-hectare Dube TradeZone, providing airside access to manufacturers, assemblers, distributors and, critically freight-forwarders and shippers.

Dube Cargo Terminal, with a dedicated cargo apron, may be benchmarked against international best practice. This state-of-the-art facility, with the fastest turn-around time from airside to landside, is considered the most secure in Africa. This is best evidenced by the fact that standards for aviation security were taken into account from the design phase, resulting in the Cargo Terminal achieving consistently clean audits by the South African Civil Aviation Authority since inception.

The bACkbone of The CArgo TerminAl’s CArgo hAnDling sysTem is The siemens s7 400 PlC ComPuTer sysTem. benefiTs inCluDe:1. sCAnning – The sophisticated computer

system provides for state-of-the-art scanning of cargo on entry and exit of the terminal, linked directly to on-site Customs and other regulatory bodies. This enables fast and efficient processing of cargo by such regulatory

organisations. 2. TrACk-AnD-TrACe – The system’s

visualisation element (SCADA System) further enables all cargo, to or from anywhere in the world, to be digitally tracked and mechanically handled, making loading and retrieval quick and super efficient, while providing a clear goods audit trail.

3. elevATeD TrAnsfer vehiCle (eTv) – A further component of the system is a highly sophisticated ETV operation. The system makes use of unique Unit Loading Device (ULD) identification numbers for each ULD and facilitates the transfer and storage of cargo contained in such ULDs. The identification numbers are used by the system for the movement of cargo through the terminal. The cargo handling system comprises six hydraulic lifting stations (two of which are located in the cold storage section of the Cargo Terminal) and six airside ‘lanes’ for the movement of import/export cargo. It provides for the fully-automated movement and 100% accurate traceability of goods within the Cargo Terminal from the point of entry through to the point of departure, negating the need for any human or forklift handling of cargo. This, in turn, cuts security

risk and reduces the possibility of damage to ULDs. Indeed, no damage to any ULD has been registered at Dube Cargo Terminal since the beginning of operations in 2010. The ETV system is linked to both a dedicated refrigerated section within the Cargo Terminal and an elevated conveyor transfer system, or Air Bridge, used by freight forwarders and shippers.

CArgo TerminAl – TrADehouse AnD Air briDge:1. Integral to Dube Cargo Terminal is

the neighbouring Dube TradeHouse, whereby – in a world first – all freight forwarders and shippers are located in a single building.

2. Dube TradeHouse offers integrated warehousing and office space and is directly linked to the adjacent Cargo Terminal by way of an elevated conveyor transfer system, or Air Bridge.

3. The Air Bridge transfers cargo directly from warehouses contained in Dube TradeHouse to the Cargo Terminal, where it is scanned and placed in storage ahead of outbound flights. This – the only system of its kind in South Africa – provides direct airside access to freight forwarders, while affording Dube TradePort a distinct competitive advantage.

CArgo TerminAl – refrigerATeD fACiliTy:1. A significant portion of the Cargo

Terminal is refrigerated, creating a cold chain facility for the effective and swift export of time-sensitive and perishable goods without any negative impact on quality or freshness of goods.

2. The refrigerated section of the terminal is 1 500m² in extent and its 45-bay perishables-receiving area is fully temperature-controlled.

CArgo TerminAl – Dube AiroAD:1. Dube AiRoad is a dedicated, time-

sensitive logistics fleet capable of connecting Dube Cargo Terminal with major cities and airports anywhere in South Africa by road.

2. Part of the vehicle fleet is refrigerated, ensuring cold chain integrity.

3. The fleet comprises Euro 5 Emission trucks, so minimising environmental impact.

4. Dube Cargo Terminal has been specifically designed to provide sufficient space for truck units.

5. The fleet comprises a range of vehicle sizes in order to be in a position to handle any cargo.
