Assessing Dual Credit Students Formative v. Summative Assessment As instructors, we assess student learning. But how often and how much is the assessment worth? There are two types of assessments that we can give our students: formative and summative. The table below provides a brief overview of these two types of assessment.

Formative Assessment Summative Assessment The goal is to monitor student learning to provided ongoing feedback that can be use by instructors to improve teaching.

The goal is to evaluate student learning at the end of a unit.

Low-stakes, or for a low point value – usually for a daily grade or not for a grade at all

High Stakes, or for a high point value – usually for a major grade

Even though the classes we teach are college-level courses, all of our assessments should not be summative. Formative assessments help students achieve success on summative assessments. Formative assessments can be given easily with or without technology. Below you will find strategies and tools that you can incorporate into your classes to assess student learning regularly.

No Tech Formative Assessment Techniques You can create several formative assessments using multi-colored cardstock. Each card/answer choice should be its own color so that it is easy for you to recognize student responses. Cards can be created using a table in Microsoft word. It is recommended that you use 2 columns and a font size greater than 48 when making cards.

• Multiple Choice Cards – Embed a multiple choice quiz into the middle of your lecture and ask students to hold up the card that represents their answer to the question. Cards can be A-D and T and F (for True and False)

• Emojis – Students can use emoji cards to let you know how they feel about what you are teaching. Find an emoji for terms like “Got it,” “Almost Got it” and “Don’t Got it” and distribute them during or after a lesson. Students hold up their card to let you know their level of understanding for any topic.

• Head, Heart, Hand – Students can use these cards to reflect on the lesson. Students can choose to write a sentence about what they learned (head), about how they feel after the lesson (heart), or about something they will take away (hand). The instructor can collect these as an exit ticket; these can also be used as entrance tickets if the instructor wants students to reflect on the previous day’s learning.

` Low Tech Formative Assessment Techniques

If you are in a computer lab, can reserve laptops/chromebooks, or if students are permitted to use their mobile devices, you can do a quick assessment using one of these game-like applications. Each of these tools allows students to use their devices as a response tool. Each of the tools listed below makes the assessment competitive, which increases students’ engagement.

Low Tech Formative Assessment Tools

Tool Special Feature Website Free Mobile App? Kahoot Students can take the quiz

individually or on teams in class. The instructor can also assign Kahoots for homework. Download results into an Excel spreadsheet!

www.getkahoot.com Yes, for responses only.

Quizizz Students take quizzes at their own pace (even in class). As an instructor, you can create a quiz from scratch, or you can search quizzes created by other instructors and copy questions directly into your own quiz.

Universal Design for Learning

Lone Star College-Tomball is committed to student success. This is why we work toward making sure our classes are universally designed. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an approach to education that “eliminates barriers in learning and increases access to learning for all students.” Because all students learn in different ways, there are multiple ways that we should approach teaching, assessment, and engagement. There are three principles of UDL:

• Multiple Means of Representation - show the information you are teaching in different ways to meet the learning needs of all students.

• Multiple Means of Action and Expression - provide options for students to express what they know.

• Multiple Means of Engagement - provide students with choices and challenges to help keep them engaged in learning.

Here are examples of how instructors apply the principles of UDL in their classes.

GOVT 2305: Basic Principles of Government Representation Action and Expression Engagement

Create an infographic that illustrates system of checks and balances and separation of powers.

Create branches of government cards – 1 color for each branch. Give each student all three cards. Call out/display function of the government and have students hold up the branch of government responsible.

Allow students to choose one of the following activities: • Create a triangle shaped diagram that

lists the three branches and fill in real world examples that explains the principle of checks and balances and tie in to some kind of media as an example of the branches acting on the others

• Create a Quizlet study set that has several examples of the functions of each branch.

• Create an Adobe Spark Video summarizing the branches of government and the functions.

ENGL 1301: Supporting Details Representation Action and Expression Engagement

Use advertisements (commercials or print advertisements) to show how marketers support the point they are making.

Give each group of students a bag of sentence strips. Each strip should have a different sentence on it. The bag should also contain the topic sentence, and this should be on a different color sheet of paper so that students can identify it quickly. Students’ task is to identify the correct supporting sentences for their assigned topic sentence. Sentences that do not support the topic sentence should be placed back in the bag.

Choose from one of the following: • Have students create a main idea

sentence and supporting detail statements for a product that they love (or hate). Have students write a review for a product that they recently purchased. Their point should be supported with solid supporting details.

• Create a Kahoot titled “Which idea doesn’t belong” and have students identify statements that do NOT support the topic sentence/thesis.

• Have students create a commercial using Adobe Spark Video

Any course Using technology tool: Adobe Spark Post

Representation Action and Expression Engagement In addition to creating an assignment in MS Word, use one of the templates in Post to create a graphic that lets your students know what they should do on an upcoming assignment. Make sure you include instructions, due dates, and more, to create a visually appealing assignment sheet.

Students can demonstrate their understanding of the content you are teaching by creating a Post. With Post, students can really focus on what was important in the lesson because they will be limited to the amount of text they can include on a post.

Connect what students are learning to their preferred social media outlet. There are a variety of templates for creating a post; these templates mirror social media. For example, there is an Instagram template that you and your students can use to present an idea or concept.

For more information on UDL, contact [email protected]

Grit Mindset

At LSC-Tomball, grit and growth mindset are not just education buzzwords. It is who we are, and what we want our students to be. We can achieve this goal by making grit a part of the students' semester. In addition to the content you are teaching and the assignments connected to that content, we encourage faculty to embed these ideas into their curriculum.

Grit Reading List LSC-Tomball has used the following books in creating a campus-wide gritty culture. We recommend that you read the books in the order that they appear here.

• Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Carol S. Dweck • Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance by Angela

Duckworth • Grit: The New Science of What it Takes to Persevere,

Flourish, Succeed by Dr. Paul G. Stoltz

Weekly Grit Assignments Once you have an understanding of Grit and Growth Mindset, you are ready to begin embedding the concepts into your classroom. Visit the GGI Resources page (found at www.lonestar.edu/grit) for practical ways to include grit/growth mindset into your classes. Here are a few examples of the types of assignments:

• Have students complete Carol Dweck’s Mindset Quiz and Angela Duckworth’s Grit Scale after they watch an entire lesson on grit.

• Have students will tell their grit stories using Adobe Spark Video. • Have students find real examples of grit or growth mindset and post those in a discussion or

share in class. Some examples include finding a news story, sharing a Facebook post, or writing a summary of another person’s grit story.

The Basics

Class Roster: The Class Roster is a dynamic page that reflects current enrollment in your course. As students add and drop your course, it is reflected and viewed in the Class Roster page options. The default view is Enrolled status, but can easily be changed to the All or Dropped statuses by clicking on the down arrow.

Attendance Roster: The Attendance Roster provides the ability to track and manage class attendance for all enrolled students in a class. This feature is available for all classes with meeting times (excludes on-line classes) beginning Spring 2017.

Grade Roster: The Grade Roster is a static page that is generated after Official Day Roll and again at the end of the semester. As students add and drop your course, it is NOT reflected in the Grade Roster.

BEST PRACTICE! It is recommended to view course enrollment through the class roster page and NOT the grade roster or official day roll pages.

Gradebook: Gradebook is a collaborative, self- service application for instructors and students. With iStar Gradebook, instructors can set up class assignments and due dates, enter grades for individual assignments, submit midterm grades for deficiency reporting, communicate with students and submit final grades

Class Assignments: Instructors use the Class Assignment component to create, view or edit their class assignments. Instructors can create each assignment, including its assignment category, maximum points, and due date. Instructors can even specify whether a student sees the assignment grade when accessing the student’s view of Gradebook. Each class assignment can be defined by weight, points, begin date, due date (required), extended due to date and estimated grading date.

Verifying the Official Day Roll (ODR) in Faculty Center with Comments or the Midpoint Roll (MDR) with Comments On the Official Day of Record (also referred to as the census date) for each session within each term a notification will appear at the top of the Faculty Center / My Schedule page with a link to verify the Official Day Roll (ODR) and again at the Midpoint Day for each session. The link is visible the next business day after the official day and midpoint day. These links will remain visible to the primary faculty member for five (5) business days only. Verifying Official Day Roll or Midpoint Day Roll Frequently Asked Questions

Q: WHAT IF ONE OF THE STUDENTS LISTED ON THE OFFICIAL DAY ROLL HAS NEVER ATTENDED CLASSES? A: Check the ‘Never Attended’ box next to the student’s name.

Q: WHAT IF A STUDENT IS ATTENDING BUT DOES NOT APPEAR ON THE OFFICIAL DAY ROSTER? A: Have the student report immediately to Student Services! This could indicate that the student is attending your course but has

not registered nor paid for the course properly.

Q: IS THERE AN OPTION TO INDIVIDUALLY SELECT EACH STUDENT AND VERIFY?

A: No. The Official Day Roll and Midpoint Day Roll is verified for the entire course only and not individual students.

Q: MY CLASSES HAVE STARTED AND ONE CLASS HAS AN ODR LINK AND THE OTHER DOES NOT. WHY IS THAT? A: Official Day Rolls (ODR) are generated the next business day AFTER the official date of the session. If you teach multiple

sessions over a term, you may have different census dates for each session. For example, the official day is on a Friday. The ODR will not be generated until Monday (unless it is a holiday). The same happens for the Midpoint Day Roll (MDR).

Q: WHEN AN INSTRUCTOR VERIFIES THE OFFICIAL DAY ROSTER AND ENTERS COMMENTS, IS OFFICIAL DAY ROLL GOING TO KEEP THESE COMMENTS? WILL THE DIVISION BE ABLE TO SEE THE COMMENTS IN CASE THEY NEED TO GO BACK IN IF THERE IS A QUESTION ABOUT ATTENDANCE AND WHO THEY LISTED AS NEVER ATTENDED?

A: Yes, the comments are kept unless a new official day roll is generated and comments replaced.

Q: WILL STUDENTS BE DROPPED BY LISTING THEIR NAME AND ID IN THE COMMENTS SECTION? A: There are no “automatic” actions taken from the comments (no one is dropped automatically). A paper form should still be

submitted if an instructor wishes to have a student dropped from their course.
