The professor introduced himself then asked the rest ofthe class to get to know someone that they didn’t alreadyknow.

An elderly lady in the class introduced herself to a burlyguy wearing a DU t-shirt and was obviously a varsityfootball player.

“Hi, my name is Rose. I’m 87 years old. May I giveyou a hug?”

“Of course, my name is Dusty. Why are you in college atsuch a young age?” he smiled as they hugged.

Rose said, “I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married, and have a couple of kids!Actually, I always dreamed of having a college education and now I’m getting one.”

After class they walked to the union and had coffee. Every day for the rest of thesemester they did the same. Rose became a campus sweetheart and at the end of thesemester the DUs invited her to speak at the football banquet.

As she began her speech she dropped her 3 by 5 cards on the floor, and a littleembarrassed she leaned into the microphone and said, “I’m sorry I’m so jittery. I gaveup beer and this whiskey is killing me! I’ll never get my cards back in order so let mejust tell you what I know.”

“There are only a few secrets to staying young, being happy and achieving success.You have to find humor every day and you have to have a dream.

“There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you are 19years old and lie in bed for one full year, you will turn 20 years old. If I am 87 yearsold and stay in bed for a year and never do anything I will turn 88. Anybody can growolder. That doesn’t take any talent or ability.

“The idea is to grow up by always finding opportunity in change. Have no regrets.The elderly usually don’t have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did notdo. The only people who fear death are those with regrets.”

One week after graduation, Rose passed away. The entire DU house and half of thecampus attended her funeral as a tribute to Rose, who taught by example that it’s nevertoo late to be all that you can be.

Growing older is mandatory. Growing up is optional.

DU is blessed with thousands of young men and old men who are achieving our goal ofgrowing up and becoming better men.

For the second time in six years, the RockyMountains provided a magnificentbackdrop, as Denver, Colorado played hostto the annual Delta Upsilon LeadershipInstitute. Held at the Hyatt Tech CenterHotel, the Leadership Institute was attendedby over 350 DUs, faculty and guests, whogathered for leadership and educationaltraining, brotherhood and camaraderie, aswell as a reunion for regular attendees.

The hotel convention area wasdecorated with new banners and signs,resplendent with DU pride. The weekendbegan with the tone being set by an excitingopening session conducted by Brother CurtisZimmerman, Miami ’04 who was aninspiration throughout the weekend. Thefeeling of Brotherhood was in the airThursday evening at the opening banquet. After the playingof Reminiscence and fond remembrance of all DUs whocame before us, the brothers were treated to a wonderful andinspiring opening keynote by Jim Riley. Mr. Riley playedfootball as a defensive end at the University of Oklahoma,before playing for the 1972 undefeated Miami Dolphins aspart of the famous “No Name Defense.”

The attendees were also witness to the first seven of theawards to be given throughout the weekend, among them anew award that recognizes the Alumni Chapter of the Year,with the inaugural award going to the Cornell Chapteralumni. All chapter awards for the weekend were presentedby the members of the DU Emerging Leaders Program(DUEL) which is held annually at the Institute. Unveiled in2000, this program is designed for freshman and sophomoremembers who are nominated by their peers to attend thisspecialized leadership program. Twenty men from variouschapters who possess the leadership potential and capabilitiesattend this summer class, with more than 16 hours devoted totheir personal leadership development. The DUEL programwas led by Jeff Sears, Arlington/Northern Arizona ’98.

Friday morning’s undergraduate educational sessions ledinto a service luncheon, followed by an afternoon ofcommunity service, with DU brothers serving in severaldifferent Denver-area Boys & Girls Club locations. DUsreceived a rewarding experience working with Denver-areayouth and serving its national partnership with the Boys &Girls Clubs of both America and Canada. This event isalways a highlight of the Institute.

Friday evening, with everyone in coat and tie, thebrothers attended the Initiation Banquet. At the beginning ofthe evening, the DU Founders Medal was presented toBrother Mark Parseghian, Lehigh ’49. The Fraternity’s top

honor for individual service to the Fraternity orDU chapter was long overdue. BrotherParseghian has served as an alumnus volunteerfor the Lehigh Chapter for well over 50 years.Chairman Messick presented the award toBrother Parseghian with the first of threestanding ovations from the brotherhood thatevening.

The second standing ovation was forBrother Reid Ricciardi, Purdue ’98 who waspresented with the 2005 Chairman’s Award forAlumnus Volunteer of the Year. BrotherRicciardi has been a driving force in thesuccess and stability of the Purdue Chapter, andis a fine example of DU alumni leadership.

The third standing ovation of the eveningfollowed the Model Initiation, where sevenmen were officially initiated into the Fraternity.

The ceremony was presided over by Brothers Dave Maguire,Southern Illinois ’73 as Master; Aaron Clevenger, CentralFlorida ’97 as Examiner; Allan Warrack, Alberta ’61 asChief Marshal; and Michael Clark, Houston ’92 as Chaplain.Fraternity Historian, Brother Craig Sowell, Houston ’92delivered an inspirational charge on “DU Vision.” Those whowere newly received into the Delta U Brotherhood: BryceBuch, Iowa State ’08, Jeff Czerniak, Iowa State ’08, BrandonClifton, North Dakota State ’08, Chris Catoe, San Jose ’06,Jay Li, Toronto ’07, Kyle Lorts, Western Illinois ’06, andThursday night’s keynote speaker, Jim Riley, Oklahoma ’05,who accepted a bid to join the Fraternity as an alumnusearlier in the day! It is hard to explain the exhilaration of astanding ovation of over 350 brothers at the conclusion of aDU Initiation, but it is truly a rewarding and emotionalexperience.

Saturday’s events began with more leadership andeducational programming, followed by a first-everFoundation Luncheon. The DU Educational Foundation wasthe focus of the luncheon, which included Oak Circle awardsand scholarship presentations, as well as a publicannouncement of an endowment campaign for chapterleadership, an article about which may be found in this issueof the Quarterly. The luncheon also recognized all of thosealumni in attendance (over 30 men) that have publiclypledged support to the campaign.

Following the luncheon the annual business of theFraternity was conducted at the Undergraduate Convention,followed by the alumni Assembly of Trustees. Brothers BillMessick and Gary Killips were re-elected as Chairman andSecretary of the Fraternity, respectively, and Brother RonDowhaniuk, Oregon State ’86 was elected to a term as aDirector.

In 2001, Delta Upsilon established the FoundersMedal to recognize those brothers who have givenan extraordinary amount of time and inspirationalservice to Delta Upsilon, specifically to a particularChapter. On Friday, July 29, 2005, it was presentedfor the 14th time at the annual Delta UpsilonLeadership Institute.

Founders Medal recipients embody the spirit ofDelta Upsilon ideals, follow the example of ourFounding Fathers, and exemplify the qualities and traits of atrue DU. It was only natural for Mark Parseghian, Lehigh ’49,to be awarded this honor.

After he was initiated on June 26, 1946, BrotherParseghian began his lifelong journey of service to DeltaUpsilon and the Lehigh Chapter. He is an integral part of the

Lehigh Chapter, and has always been a level-headed and wise voice of reason. He has servedably as Alumni President for the Lehigh Chapterfor mmaannyy years and has always been an extremelyactive alumnus. He has a keen sense of alwaysdoing what is right for DU and the Lehigh Chapter.His leadership always shined through and he hasalways kept bb rrootthheerrhhoooodd at the forefront.Nobody can doubt his love for DU, and the loyal

and dedicated leadership that he has provided.“Volunteers are a commodity; a rarity. Even more rare

are those alumni that commit themselves to Delta Upsilon foreternity.” Brother Parseghian is a shining example thatmembership in DU never ends.

The weekend culminated at Saturday’sGrand Banquet, which included thepresentation of the McQuaid Scholarships,Sweepstakes Finalists and DUEL graduation,as well as the President’s Award for DUUndergraduate of the Year, which wasawarded to Brother Danny Collins, Missouri’06. The evening also included a tribute toretiring Board member, Brother Rich Delano,Indiana ’85, who was recognized for hislong-time service on the Fraternity’s Board ofDirectors as Treasurer.

The banquet closed with the triumphantcelebration of the DePauw Chapter who wasawarded the DU Sweepstakes Trophy, recognizing them as thechapter who had the best year in 2004-05. Following the

banquet, DUs enjoyed good times andfellowship with a casino party on the topfloor of the hotel, overlooking the nightskyline of Denver.

The Leadership Institute is one of the finestexamples of Fraternity conventions in theentire Greek world, providing a wonderfulmix of fun and brotherhood with exceptionalleadership and educational programmingopportunities for our undergraduates. Asalways, our appreciation to the DUEducational Foundation and its donors formaking possible support of the Institute andother educational programs of DU.

The 2006 Leadership Institute is scheduled for KansasCity August 3-6. Make plans now to be there.

If justice is our foundation, then itis held in place with brotherhood.We see our brothers often, if not

everyday. We interact with them, listento them, even when we are in fact notpresent. For some chapters, theirbrotherhood is strong, but for others,brotherhood is nothing more than anotion. The Carthage Chapter leanstowards the former, but even wesometimes forget the true potential ofbrotherhood.

While in Denver for the Leadership Institutesix of us from Carthage were presented with anopportunity to travel west

towards themountains and dosome hiking. Inorder to do so, wewould miss theUndergraduateConvention.BrotherChristopher Alms’07 was thegreatest brother tothe six of us thatweekend,sacrificing a tripto the mountainsso that he couldattend themeetings andupdate us whenwe returned.

Lookingback, I believe

that none of us realized the impact we hadon each other throughout the trip. As we approached atrail leading to a peak upwards to almost 12,000 feet, oneof our brothers informed us that he, in fact, had asthma.Perfect…up in the thin air of the mountains, far from anymedical aid, with an asthmatic. As sarcastic as that maysound, our first reaction was the opposite: We would staytogether and slow down when necessary. After taking acouple of short breaks, we reached a scenic lookout and

simply sat down to take in thebreathless view of themountains. It was impressive,as the considerable size of themountains instantly made usall feel insignificant.Regardless, we were there. Thesight was beautiful as well asmiles away from the nearesttown.

That day made me realizeexactly what it means to be inDelta Upsilon. Joining the

fraternity is like observing the mountains from a distance:something great lies ahead. As we continue on our paththrough Delta Upsilon, we are given the necessary toolsand resources to become better men. And begin climbing.One of our brothers may have obstacles in his life thatmight hinder him from reaching the top at the same timeas the rest of us. It is our responsibility—not out offeigned care, but no less than our love for our brothers—to walk the path side by side with him. As we reach thetop, we will see the world from a grand angle, somethingonly a few would see in their lifetimes. And we would notbe doing this alone because we are surrounded by ourbrothers, each taking in the same view.

Realistically, as a 20-year old undergraduate member ofDelta Upsilon, I can only speak of idealistic walks of life,since today I onlystand at the base ofthe mountain. Thefuture is daunting,but I know onevery crucial fact:I am surroundedby my brothers,eager to make thesame trip to thetop where ourolder, moreexperiencedbrothers wait forus inanticipation.

At the end of the Spring 2005 semester,Brother Josh Sawyer, Arlington ’06, waselected Student Congress President. He isthe first DU from the Arlington Chapter tohold such a prestigious position oncampus.Also, at the 2005 UTA Greek LifeAwards, the Arlington Chapter cleanedhouse, winning many awards.We receivedGold Star status for our grades on theChapter Expectations,Awards, and

Standards Review. Josh Sawyer alsoreceived Best Active Member in IFC andBest IFC Chapter President.The ArlingtonChapter also brought home the mostprestigious award of the night,The Dr. KentGardner Award.This award “recognizes theone fraternity for demonstratingcommitment to the values, principles andhigh standards found in all fraternities.”This award was given to us by the rest ofthe fraternities here at UTA.We wouldalso like to congratulate Jeff Mooradian ’07.He was nominated for Best IFC NewMember. He has put forth much effort intoour chapter and the IFC as well.

Last spring two of our brothers werechosen by their fellow seniors tospeak in front of their peers on twodifferent events. Robert T. Goldsmith’05 gave his speech atCommencement and Derrick M.Collins ’05 gave his address at theNew Alumni Convocation.The chapteris very proud of Brothers Goldsmithand Collins and pleased with not onlythe impact they had in the chapter, butwith all they did on campus as well.Tothe 12 graduating seniors: all the bestfor the future.

At the beginning of August 2004, theGeorgia Tech Chapter had 27undergraduate brothers.Two successful fallrushes have increased the chapter size to57, with 20 pledges.ChapterGeorgia Tech

Spring 2005, the Delta Upsilon Chapter atHouston won first place for their carnival

booth at UH Frontier Fiesta – the biggestevent on campus in the spring. Brother JeffRocheleau ’06 was named “Mr. Fiesta for2005.” For the 2004-05 school year, onceagain Delta Upsilon had the highest GPAof all Greek organizations and was theonly fraternity whose GPA was above theUH All-Men’s Average.

William R. Ross ’06 was namedGreek Man of the Year at KentState University at the spring 2005Greek Week ceremonies.This wasthe first such award won by a KentState DU. Congratulations toBrother Ross!

Kent StateCongratulations to the Oregon StateChapter for a spring 2005 term GPA of2.89, ranking 8th out of 22 fraternities,and surpassing the All-Men’s Average.April 3, 2005 saw the initiation of six

new Brothers and the growth of theAnderson family of DUs. Kevin J.Anderson ’08 joined his brother Scott’05, and uncle Tom Windedahl ’70 asBrothers in Delta Upsilon.

The spring 2005 semester at DeltaUpsilon Rochester was rife with activity.Robert C. Cavanaugh II ’07 did anexcellent job getting some originalprogramming together. Complementingthese programs were some verysuccessful philanthropic events, thehighlight being the annual Homeless forthe Homeless to raise money for Habitatfor Humanity.The semester was toppedoff with the initiation of 13 new Brothers.

April 24 the undergraduate brothersand alumni of the Delta UpsilonRochester Chapter gathered for theannual Spring Brunch, held at the beautifulOak Hill Country Club.The theme wasBrotherhood:Throughout Our Chapter’sHistory.Among the highlights of themorning were the speeches of BrothersPete Tierney and Paul Ford, both of whomgraduated in the class of 1936.They gavethe undergraduate chapter a differentperspective of the Fraternity and anentirely new look at brotherhood throughtheir stories of the way the chapter usedto be. In addition, special honors weregiven to Seniors Nicholas Delahanty ’05

and Andrew Hart ’05. Brother Delahantyreceived the chapter’s Harm PotterAward, which is given to the seniorbrother who most embodies the ideals ofthe Fraternity. Brother Hart received theDick Kaiser (1949) Memorial Scholarshipaward for being the graduating seniorwith the highest overall GPA.

The Kevin Byrne Memorial Golf Tournament was a big success! Over 100 golfers competed,raising $17,704 for the V Foundation for cancer research. The tournament was held inmemory of Kevin Byrne, Central Missouri ’85, Executive Vice President of the CentralMissouri State University Chapter of Delta Upsilon, serving in 1982 – 1983. Kevin died ofesophageal cancer on December 21, 2004, at his home in Plano, Texas. Kevin’s wife, Laura,and the rest of the Byrne family organized the tournament, which took place on July 30,2005, at Firewheel Golf Park in Garland, Texas.

Some of the participating golfers said it was the best tournament they had played in,how smoothly the tournament ran, the number of prizes, and the generous goody bag. Forinformation about playing in or sponsoring The Kevin Byrne Memorial Golf Tournament in

The Delta Upsilon Distinguished Alumnus Award was conferred upon Brother Martin Krasnitz,Chicago ’55, in a ceremony this past June in Chicago. Extremely successful in business forseveral years, Brother Krasnitz is the retired president of the Sewing Machine Exchange, Inc. inChicago. He served on the Fraternity’s Board of Directors through 2001, and recently waselected to the Board of Trustees for the Educational Foundation. Additionally, he is a long-timecontributor to the Foundation and has been recognized as an honored lifetime donor.

The award was presented at the annual banquet of the Chicago Chapter alumni by past DUInternational Fraternity President and fellow chapter brother, Jim McQuaid, Chicago ’60.Brother Krasnitz joins Brothers McQuaid and Maurice Mandel, Chicago ’55 as the thirdmember of the Chicago Chapter to be recognized with the Fraternity’s Distinguished AlumniMedallion. Lou Holtz, Kent State ’58, is an in-studio analyst for ESPN College Football. He provides studio analyseson ESPNEWS ADT Coaches Spotlight, ESPN2 College Game Day programs including pre-game, half-time and post-game segments, and Sports Center.

Sean Deskins, Louisville ’04, was recently appointed by the American Bar Association (ABA) Law StudentDivision as their liaison to the ABA Section for Labor and Employment Law. This is a national leadershipposition with the largest association of attorneys in the country. The liaisons serve as a link between the Boardof Governors of the Law Student Division and other ABA sections, divisions, and committees. Deskins is asecond year law student at the University of Louisville Louis D. Brandeis School of Law.

Jordan B. Lotsoff, Northern Illinois ’88, has been named by The Hartford as their Operations Directorfor Individual Risk. Jordan will lead IR projects related to operating and strategic planning, with a focus on profitablegrowth in the IR line of business. He will also act as a liaison between Field Operations and Segment.

Too White Crew is a six-band from Chicago featuring two DUs fromthe Northern Illinois Chapter: John C. Cordogan ’89 (C-Note) picturedleft, and Steven F. Donaldson ’88 (Woodsy Fresh) pictured right. Theband has had tremendous success on college campuses – havingappeared at the University of Illinois, Bradley University, andWestern Illinois University among other campuses.

The band has opened for hip hop legends such as Tone Loc, RobBase & DJ EZ Rock, the Digital Underground, and has been askedby KRS-ONE to open for Public Enemy in NYC. They werefeatured on WGN news twice and were called “insanelyentertaining” by the Chicago press. Most recently they wereasked to perform in Las Vegas on a regular basis and at the timethe Quarterly last heard from them they had a June showcasescheduled for Rio’s Voodoo lounge.

Tacoma (Washington) City Councilman Kevin R. Phelps, Washington State ’77, was appointed chairman of SoundTransit’s finance committee in 2002. He has now left the board amid accolades that he was a key figure in turning SoundTransit around. At the time Phelps began his challenge, Sound Transit was reeling from revelations that Seattle’s light railline would be vastly more expensive than voters had been told and would take three years longer to build. The $500million grant had been suspended and the federal government was demanding accountability and proof the agency couldcontrol costs. Today, the federal grant has been restored, and Sound Transit is constructing a 14-mile light rail line that isprojected to be completed on schedule and come in under the budget set for it in 2001. Besides his councilman duties,Brother Phelps is chairman of the Tacoma-Pierce County Board of Health and Pierce Transit, and managing partner in theTacoma Landmark Convention Center.

Alfred G. Wirth, McGill ’63, was presented with an Honourary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Alberta atthe June10, 2005 convocation.

Delta Upsilon completed its 2003-04 fiscal year in astrong financial position with net assets of $2.41million, including cash and investments of $2.17million. For the year, net assets increased byapproximately $167,000 as strong investmentreturns more than offset a general fund operatingdeficit. The operating deficit was in line with ourapproved budget and reflects disciplined expensecontrol in line with our membership numbers.

The Permanent Trust Fund (PTF) experienced again of $234,000 this past year, or just over 14% onbeginning net assets. The Fund continues to bemanaged by Brother Maury Mandel, Chicago ’55,and we thank him for his continued service to ourFraternity.

The Loss Prevention Fund is a designated fundwithin our Fraternity that supports our efforts tomaintain reasonable insurance rates for ourmembers. At the end of the year, net assets stand at$669,000 and are available to meet future claimexpenses should this be needed. It is noteworthythat our Fraternity has had excellent claimexperience over the past five years and that ourinsurance premiums are the lowest charges to anylarge fraternity.

IInnvveessttmmeenntt iinn BBuuiillddiinngg BBeetttteerr MMeenn

The core purpose of Delta Upsilon is BuildingBetter Men. In support of this purpose, ourprofessional staff continues to execute excitingprogramming that meets the challenge ofdeveloping leaders within Delta Upsilon for the21st Century. Programming dollars were againdirected to our exemplary educational conferences.Undergraduate member fees as well as chapterbased conference assessments cover only a portionof these costs. During the past year grants of$96,000 from the Delta Upsilon EducationalFoundation as well $116,000 from the PermanentTrust Fund were used to subsidize programmingcosts.

FFuunnddiinngg PPrrooggrraammmmiinngg GGrroowwtthh

To support Building Better Men at our chapters,revenue growth is essential to cover the cost of ourmembership education programming. Revenuegrowth has come and will continue to come fromthree sources:

1) Undergraduate Fees – in 2003-04, individualmember fees were held at $100 per man per year.Future revenue growth will come from efforts toincrease average chapter size. Research shows thatchapters must maintain an average membership sizeof 40 men to maintain financial viability. Iencourage all alumni to help your chapters meet thechallenge of expanding membership.

2) Permanent Trust Fund – this fund with assets of$1.8 million, provides additional support to theFraternity’s operations. During 2003-04, $116,000was transferred from the Permanent Trust Fund tothe General Operating Fund of the Fraternity foreducational programming. It is the policy of theBoard of Directors to restrict withdrawals from thePermanent Trust Fund to 7% of year-end assets.

3) Alumni support in the form of grants from theDelta Upsilon Educational Foundation. Grants forthe year totaled $96,000. The Fraternity is verygrateful for the support of the Foundation insupporting the educational initiatives of theFraternity. We are looking forward to increases inthe amounts available for educational grants asinvestment returns improve and fundraising effortscontinue to expand.

Programs & Services Supported by the DUEducational FoundationFor over 50 years, the Delta Upsilon EducationalFoundation has existed to help change the lives of theundergraduate members. Through the generous annualgifts of our brothers, the Foundation has been able toprovide educational grants to the Fraternity, DU chapters,and individual members in a variety of ways including thefollowing.

! The Leadership Institute brings together brothers fromall chapters each summer for a four-day experience thatincludes educational seminars for chapter officers,interactive sessions focusing on the Fraternity’s FourFounding Principles, a community service event, and amodel initiation.

! The Winter Educational Conference typically includes thePresidents Academy, the Recruitment Symposium, and theCharles Evans Hughes DUEL (Delta Upsilon EmergingLeaders) Program.

! Membership Education. The Founding Fathers of DUenvisioned an association that is committed to theeducation and personal growth of its brothers. DUcontinues to evaluate its personal growth and developmentcurriculum tailored to each individual DU member. RegionalLeadership Seminars (RLS) engage all chapters in the earlyspring at the province level for an intense two-dayleadership training agenda coordinated with alumnileadership.

! The McQuaid Scholarship/Fellowship awardsundergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships of$2,500 each to deserving DU members.

! Chapter Educational Accounts provide for restrictedfunds within the endowment of the Foundation. Donorshave the ability to make tax-deductible gifts benefiting theeducational needs of a specific chapter.

! The Leadership Consultant Program provides on-campusresources for chapters and brothers to improve theirchapter’s operation and effectiveness. The Foundationprovides an annual grant to help defray the cost ofeducational workshops, seminars, and retreatsadministered by the leadership consultants.

! The Alumni Volunteer Conference, conducted during theLeadership Institute, provides instruction and problem-solving seminars for those who serve as alumni volunteersto our chapters.

! The Delta Upsilon/Boys & Girls Club service partnershipwas created as a forum for local DU chapters to activelyengage in grass roots volunteerism. The involvement withBoys & Girls Clubs affords DU brothers the opportunity todevelop character and lasting friendships.

Additional support includes:

" The Quarterly, the Cornerstone, and other educationalpublications.

" IHQ summer internship program." Grants for UIFI to individual members.

In the summer of 2000 The McQuaid Scholarship Fund was created to acknowledge the tremendous service of Delta Upsilon’s imme-diate past president, James D. McQuaid Chicago ’60.The creation of the scholarship marked a welcome return to the Foundation’s earlypractices of awarding financial grants to individual DU brothers. The McQuaid Scholarships are awarded on the basis of scholarship,Fraternity/campus involvement, letters of recommendation, and community service.

SStteepphheenn NN.. AArryyeeee,, DePauw ‘07, is a member ofthe Student Cabinet, serves as an officer in the YoungEconomists Society, and also as President of theInternational Students Association. Having come tocollege after graduating high school in Ghana, Africa,finding acceptance and support in this newenvironment, as he puts it, has been a very importantcomponent in his educational successes. Sincearriving as a freshman student, he has found thatacceptance within the four walls of Delta Upsilon. Ashe puts it, “I have come to realize that being a DUmeans being the best I can be with whatever I havebeen given. I live each day for this noble cause, one ofhumility, one of service and one of excellence. I liveeach day, a life that shows the DU difference.”

JJoosshhuuaa DD.. KKooeenn,, Arlington ‘07, boasts an impressiveresume both in Delta Upsilon, his campus, and in hiscommunity. He had held many positions within hischapter before being elected as the current chapterpresident. He is also very active on his campus as aStudent Congress Senator, Psi Chi National HonorsSociety, UTA Psychology Society, and the NationalSociety of Collegiate Scholars, as well as being amember of the Honors College. One of hisreferences stated that he “continues to be the modelof leadership that the chapter uses to guide ouryounger initiated members.” After graduation heplans to attend graduate school with the goal ofearning a PhD in Clinical Psychology.

JJoohhnn SS..AAddaammss ,, Wichita ’04, served quite actively inhis chapter with positions in recruitment andmembership education. He, too, has compiled animpressive resume’ of scholastic honors, having alsobeen on the Dean’s Honor Roll, and being a memberof the Order of Omega. After spending his lastsemester studying abroad in Australia, he graduated in2004 from Wichita State University with two degrees;one in International Business and the other inEconomics. After finishing up two years as a DeltaUpsilon traveling consultant in early spring 2006, heplans to continue his studies abroad in Salamanca,Spain.

JJuuaann DD..VVeellaassqquueezz,, Purdue ’98 During his years asan undergraduate, he was heavily involved in theoperations of his chapter, serving as both Treasurerand President, while also serving as President ofOrder of Omega, as well as being active in a numberof other organizations on campus. He is a member ofseveral different honor societies, including GoldenKey,Mortar Board,Omicron Delta Kappa, and Alpha PiMu Industrial Engeineering Honor Society. He hasreceived both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees inIndustrial Engineering from Purdue University, and iscurrently at work on his PhD at Purdue.

The Oak Circle’s fourth year finished by, once again, setting an all-time record! Total dollars contributed to the Oak CircleScholarship Fund, through undergraduate and parent’s gifts, totaled $11,362. The money raised through the Oak Circle is added toan endowment to provide $1000 scholarships to be awarded each year at the Leadership Institute.

The third annual scholarship was awarded this summer at the 2005 Leadership Institute in Denver, Colorado. The ScholarshipCommittee chose BB rrootthheerr JJoohhnn SS.. BBoossttwwiicckk,, Kansas State ’07 as the Oak Circle Scholarship recipient. Brother Bostwickreceived a check for $1000 to help defray the costs of his education.

Brothers can give at any level, and receive recognition at Conferences and in the DU Quarterly. However, all donors who gift $25receive, in addition, a collector’s lapel pin whose design changes each year.

In addition to individual recognition, chapters are also recognized for their cumulative giving totalin a fiscal year. Chapters are identified as Bronze, Silver, or Gold Chapters, with cumulative totals of$250, $500, and $1000 respectively. This year’s awarded chapters were: BB rroonnzzee LLeevveell:: Houston,Kansas, Kansas State, Kent State, Lafayette, Miami, Nebraska, Northwestern, Rochester, San Jose andWashington. SSii llvveerr LLeevveell:: Central Florida, Indiana and Manitoba. GGoolldd LLeevveell:: Minnesota.

This year also marked the second year for the Oak Circle “Province Challenge”, whereby eachProvince strives to raise the most money among all the provinces. For the province that raises themost money, each participating chapter received a discount on their Leadership Institute (LI)registration. Repeating for the second year in a row as winner of the Province Challenge wasPP rroovviinnccee 99.. The individual cchhaapptteerr that raised the most received one free paid registration to the

LI, with that honor going to the MMaanniittoobbaa CChhaapptteerr..Lastly, the DUEF recognized the efforts of BB rrootthheerr DDaavviidd DD.. MMccKKee aagg ,, II VV,, Minnesota ’04 who, through his efforts, have helped

make the Oak Circle the success it is. To recognize him, the “Undergraduate Donor of the Year” was changed to the “David D.McKeagOak Circle Donor Award”. It is awarded annually to an individual or chapter whose efforts had the greatest impact on the OakCircle Program.The renamed award was awarded this year to brothers of the MMaanniittoobbaa CChhaappeerr.

The 2005-06 Oak Circle year began with a great response at this year’s Leadership Institute, with 123 undergraduates respondingwith gifts that totaled nearly $3,000! Last year’s undergraduate donor total for the entire year was 91 donors, so we have alreadyeclipsed last year’s record of donors in just one weekend! Donors to this year’s Oak Circle receive the 5th year Anniversary colorlapel pin, pictured above.

installation of the Foundation’s new Lifetime Recognition Wall.The recognition is designed to honor those brothers who have exhibited their loyalty through their

generous spirit of giving.The wall currently recognizes all brothers who have amassed a lifetime gift total of$5,000 or more to the DU Educational Foundation and/or Chapter Educational Account. For those whohave already reached this plateau, or once a donor does reach it, his nameplate will be automatically added.Once a nameplate is on the wall, donors also have an opportunity to have their nameplate moved “up a level”as their lifetime total increases. Started over 30 years ago by then-President W. Donald Watkins, North Carolina ’27, the President’s Club honors all donors within a fiscal yearwho gift a total of $200 or more to the annual fund. In the 2004-05 fiscal year, we hit our goal by having over 500 Brothers attain membershipin the club by giving to the Annual Fund.)

Members of the President’s Club Annual Fund receive an annual “year” pin with each renewal, and various benefits and advance notice ofspecial events as applicable. Also, members who “opt-in” to receive them, will receive a copy of their chapter’s visitation report so they can stay up-to-date on their chapter.Reports are sent via email in PDF or by mail. While in Denver, Colorado for the 2005 Leadership Institute, more than 250DU Brothers traveled to five different locations of Boys & Girls Clubs in themetro Denver area. At each Club they helped facilitate and participated inevents such as kickball, soccer, ultimate frisbee, knockout, game-room games,musical chairs, and cup-stacking. At the end of the event awards were drawnand given to B&GC members who showed high participation in the day’sevents. The events went smoothly and were a great way to display theteamwork, leadership, and service of the Brothers of Delta Upsilon Fraternity, aservice partner of Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Canada.

In 2004, the Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation embarkedupon a three-year, comprehensive fundraising campaign tosecure the future of its undergraduate leadership programming– particularly at the chapter level. With the help of alumni andfriends, the Foundation expects to raise over $2.5 million inpledges and gifts in support of chapter leadershipprogramming, training and development. This goal willallow Delta Upsilon to provide 100-200 chapterleadership scholarships, thus increasing undergraduateattendance at DU’s impactful leadership programs suchas the Leadership Institute. At the 2005 Leadership Institute, during the Foundation’sluncheon on Saturday, July 30th, the Delta Upsilon EducationalFoundation announced the endowment campaign. A NewChapter in Leadership had surpassed $1.750 million in gifts,pledges and commitments. More than 30 alumni brothers inattendance at the luncheon were recognized for their generoussupport of the campaign. In addition, five undergraduates were
