Platelet disorder in an infant: case reportThe day after being immunised with the Hib vaccine

[Hiberix] plus the DTP-poliovirus vaccine [dosages notstated], a 5-month-old infant boy was observed to have apurpural rash, and was hospitalised. A complete plateletaggregation disorder was discovered. He was treated withantibiotics for a latent infection, and received fresh frozenplasma and corticosteroids. A possible adverse reaction tothe immunisation was suspected. Gradually, the purpuraresolved and his platelet function recovered. After2 subsequent years of not being immunised, he thenpresented for vaccination. Platelet function was normal,and he was administered the combined Hib-DTP-poliovirus-vaccine [Pediacel, dosage not stated]. Twenty-four hours later, he developed asymptomatic disorderedplatelet aggregation, although his platelet function showedgradual and spontaneous recovery over the next 24 hours.Tomicrajic M, et al.
