Aims and Objectives The aim of this booklet is to develop your understanding of how to use different sources to
inspire your designs.
Practise observing things around you.
Make judgements about the design elements that you want to use.
All students are to attempt All Tasks
Design Brief and Analysis
Design Brief
Designers use different starting
points to create original designs.
Use the theme of architecture to
inspire original designs of clothing
or furniture.
At the beginning of a project you will re-
ceive a design brief which explains what you
have to do in the project and sets the scene.
This project is about using architecture, so
things like interesting buildings to inspire
designs of clothing or furniture. For example
chairs, sofas or dresses, trousers or skirts.
It may seem a little surprising to use build-
ings as inspiration for clothing and furniture,
but there are some good examples of
existing design work.
The example above shows how Lady GAGA has had
a costume made, inspired by the Beijing olympic
swimming pool. The example to the left shows a
sofa inspired by the buildings of the New York
Skyline.
Task 1 - Look up the key words below and write down the definitions.
ARCHITECTURE
COLOUR
PATTERN
TEXTURE
FORM
SHAPES
A designer can use any of the above to analyse a source of inspiration.
This is La Boca Waterfront of Buenos
Aires. It shows interesting colours and
textures that could be used to inspire a
colour palette for an artist or designer.
This building is known as the Gherkin in
London. It is a good example of 3D form
and could be used to inspire table legs or
sleeves of a dress.
This glass skyscraper is a
good source of pattern that
could be used by a designer.
This building is the Sydney Opera
House. It gives interesting shapes
and arcs to inspire designers.
Task 2 - Use the following examples of architecture to create four
different designs for EITHER fabric, fashion or furniture in the (large)
boxes opposite.
Task 3 -We are now going to look at local architecture to help us design,
using things we might know locally. Stick in photographs or do some
drawings of your own of local architecture in Shepton Mallet e.g. viaduct,
market cross, shambles, prison, church etc. Please do these as carefully as
you can showing as much detail as you can.
Task 4 - Now using the information you have found choose to design either
furniture or fashion items using the images. Use parts of the buildings to
create pattern or parts of your design like the designers have in the
introduction.
