The DST’s five principal goals are to:

• Enhance South Africa’s knowledge-generation capacity in order to produce world-class research papers and turn some advanced findings into innovative products and processes.

• Develop appropriate STI human capital to meet the needs of the society.

Astronomy: The Square Kilometer Array project update

• The building blocks in the form of professionals and experts are stationed in the Radio Astronomy Advances (RAA) and South African SKA Project Office (SASPO) – a segment of the DST.

• The RAA and SASPO comprise 100 scientists and engineers responsible with the SKA project.

KAT-7 :The Square Kilometer Array project update

• The first seven dishes of the local precursor instrument (KAT-7) were completed in January 2010.

• It is the world's first radio telescope with dishes made of fibre glass.

• KAT-7 is an engineering prototype for the 64th dish- MeerKAT, which is a useful scientific instrument.

• KAT-7 has already delivered images of the Centaurus A, a galaxy 14-million light years away.

Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies RDI Strategy (HySA):

• The centre of competence made a breakthrough in metal hydride technology that will find applications for hydrogen storage in mobile public transport and mine locomotives.

• A public-private partnership was established with Anglo Platinum and a US company to leapfrog the development of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies industry for South Africa.

1%Tenofovir Gel to prevent HIV transmission in women

• The Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA), UKZN, found that women using 1% tenofovir gel have an overall 39% lower risk of being infected with HIV than women who used a placebo gel.

• The findings needs to be confirmed before the gel can be licensed. The Follow-on African Consortium for Tenofovir Studies (FACTS) consisting of Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute, Peri-natal HIV Research Unit, Sechaba Research, UCT, Medunsa and Aurum Institute, will conduct the confirmation study (FACTS001) at 9 sites in South Africa

The National Intellectual Property Office (NIPMO)

-The interim administration office of NIPMO moved into their own offices.

- 4 new offices of technology transfer (OTTs) were established (Gauteng ,KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape and Eastern Cape).

Human Capital Development

• The number South African Research Chairs (SARChi) increased from 82 in 2009/10 to 92 in 2010/11.

• The number of bursaries awarded to postgraduate students is 2 359 (462 Honours, 268 Master’s, 234 PhDs, 476 through CoEs, 67 through PAST and 852 through SARChi).

• Out of 476 postgraduate students supported in 2010, 230 were females.

The DST developed and Implemented a range of technologies for low- cost housesinfrastructure. 410 designedhouses will be equipped withsolar water heaters,rain water harvest tanks and photovoltaic lightingsystem operating with a battery technology.

Eastern Cape, 10 hectors of Pelargonium sidoides- indigenous plants with proven efficiency in treating upper-throat infections . The project created much needed jobs for the local rural women.

Essential oil distillation

In partnership with CSIR, the DST is searching for essential oils herbs for colder climate. Rosa damascena rose oil fetching approximately R 80 000-to- R100 000 a kilogram was identified.

Performance - CSIR

• CSIR released a special report on South Africa's water problems: A CSIR Perspective on Water in South Africa- 2010.

• In partnership with Neotel/ Broadband Infraco the CSIR installed a 10 Gigabit per second network to the SALT and SKA sites.

• The state- of- the- art- HIV and TB laboratory facility was established at the CSIR in Pretoria.

• CSIR researchers trained road inspection and maintenance teams to ensure effective fixing of pot- holes.

Performance – NRF…

• 2 285 grant holders have an NRF rating (433 are black and 634 are women).

• 9 992 PhDs registered in South Africa.

• NRF invested R 115.6 m of the RISA grant budget on research equipment to the national research facilities and other research institutions.

• Researchers at the national research facility produced 220 journal articles, 109 research reports, 61 full- length conference proceedings and16 chapters in books.

Performance - HSRC

• HSRC conducted the first national survey measuring diversity in diets and food security in South Africa.

• Released a comprehensive study on the South African educators and abroad leave trends.

• The Country We Want to Live in : Hate Crimes and Homophobia in the Lives of Black Lesbian South Africans provides the state of affairs concerning lesbians lives in South Africa.

• Two projects investigated factors by the HSRC, that affect the children’s well-being in collaboration with the WHO’ Department of Violence and Injury Prevention and Disability.

• ASSAF launched a consensus study report titled “ PhD Study: Enhancing the Production of Postgraduates in South Africa” in October 2010.

• 16 journals were published on the national platform for open access publishing of high- quality South African scholarly journals.

• In collaboration with DST and NRF, ASSAF held the first annual South African Young Scientist Conference in October 2010.

Performance - TIA

• In 2010, the Innovation Fund, Tshumisano Trust, Cape Biotech Trust, Plantbio Trust, LIFElab, BioPAD Trust and the Advanced Manufacturing Technology Strategy implementation unit were merged into TIA.

• Four TIA regional offices were established: - KwaZulu Natal; - Western Cape; - Gauteng; and- Eastern Cape.

• SANSA was launched on 9 December 2010.

• The SANSA board was appointed by the Minister in Science & Technology on 01 June 2010.
