TANDBERG philosophy for DSNG

• Protect customers investment• Base the product around a very flexible chassis• Offer a wide range of option cards to let system grow• Don’t follow our competitors who provide poor upgradeability and like to obsolete

products quickly! • Do engineer new option cards to make even older systems upgradeable to the latest

technologies• Provide a full migration path to HD, DVB-S2 and other latest developments• Provide first class support specially tailored to Mobile customers (Advance Loan

scheme)• Make a TANDBERG DSNG the customers first choice by being outstanding in the

key areas of technical performance, quality and value!

TANDBERG DSNG design principles

• All models based upon our standard broadcast MPEG-2 encoder platform• Same core software for all products• Same core hardware platform for all products• Using common hardware and software provides greater reliability and easier

maintainance than a multiple-product portfolio with many hardware and software varients

• One software version across the range recognises the option cards in the chassis and presents the appropriate options and menus.

• This approach provides the customer with almost infinite upgradeability as well as a very long product lifespan.

E5714 (1U) DSNG

• The E5714 DSNG is an E5710 encoder with a factory-fitted integrated modulator card to make it capable of satellite transmission.

• 2 DSNG models: E5714 L-band and E5714 IF. The difference is the modulator output; L-band or IF at 70 / 140MHz (frequency agile).

• Both models provide premium encoding with all of the encoder features of the E5710

• E5714 IF uses a simple modulator that cannot be upgraded. It supports QPSK only and cannot support DVB-S2. However, it occupies a single option slot making REMUX or extra audio also an option since the second option slot is kept free.

• E5714L-band uses our latest satellite modulator and can be upgraded to HOM and DVB-S2. The card takes 2 option slots and so fills the chassis

• Front panel control or use the excellent and recently updated web interface.

Page 6: DSNG Mobile Presentation

E5714 notes:

• IF model uses a single card-slot modulator leaving one option slot free for extra audio or REMUX

• This IF version cannot do DVB-S2 and only supports DVB-S QPSK• L-band version uses full, 2-slot card. It is DVB-S2 capable as standard• L-band version has no free option slots and so cannot have any other option cards• If you only have 1RU of rack space, the E5714 is great but for the larger display

and host of possible upgrade options the 2U E5740 is often the best choice

MPEG-4 HD:The easy way to save up to 55% bandwidth

•For HD, the benefits of h.264 are still at the lower bitrates.

•Many broadcasters are struggling with low-bitrate MPEG-2 HD, which means 16 –20Mb/sec for contribution

•MPEG-4 can help cut this by up to 55% making 1080i look good at say 10Mb/sec.

•EN8040 combines the benefits of h.264 HD compression with DVB-S2 for maximum efficiency.

•Saves transponder cost and the need to upgrade other very expensive equipment in the truck (HPA’s, power supplies, dish antenna etc.)

Input De-blocking filters – Release 2.0

• Important for turn-around systems– 80% of MPEG-4 transmissions uses material previously encoded using MPEG-

2

• MPEG-2 compression artefacts should be removed before re-encoding in H.264– to improve end-to-end picture quality by removing obvious blocking artefacts– to save H.264 bit rate– to improve stat mux

• Conventional noise reduction methods cannot remove MPEG compression artefacts without softening the picture

• Special input de-blocking filter is required

Page 20: DSNG Mobile Presentation

Clarus™ Input de-blocking filter - Release 2.0

• Not to be confused with the MPEG-4 in loop deblocking filters

• Detects blocking artefacts of video input signal• Detects horizontal resolution of previous encoding stage

– it knows where the block edges are• Leaves clean material untouched

– filter switches off when clean source is detected• Removes MPEG-2 compression artefacts with fully adaptive filters• Improves end-to-end picture quality• Provides on average up to a 15% bit-rate reduction compared to a system without an

input de-blocking filter– Maximum saving obtained with high detail, simple motion

HD content coded with MPEG-2 at ~10 Mbit/s

AVC and latency

• Broadcasters often see AVC working with many seconds of encode / decode latency

• This has made it impossible to use H.264 for contribution• TANDBERG has engineered a solution and has new low latency modes in the

encoder and RX1290 decoder• This should achieve a useable latency of 0.55s (encode / decode) with many of the

H.264 encoding efficiency benefits still in place. • Delay same for HD and SD modes.• For example, good quality HD contribution at 10 to 12Mb/s is possible with 0.55s

delay!

Page 28: DSNG Mobile Presentation

Confidential | www.tandbergtv.com

DVB-S2 – A new MODULATION technology

• DVB-S2 is not connected with the encoding technology• DVB-S2 purely affects the modulator and the transmission of data to the satellite• DVB-S2 is simply more efficient than DVB-S (which it replaces). So, for the same

bandwidth DVB-S2 can either transmit more data, or the same data rate with more robustness, or a bit of both.

• Almost all Voyager products have a DVB-S2 capable modulator capable of supporting all DVB-S and DVB-S2 modes up to 32APSK!

• You need to have a DVB-S2 demodulator in your receiver. TANDBERG offers a demodulator upgrade to DVB-S2 for TT1260, TT1280 and RX1290.

• Make sure that the demodulator supports the features that you wish to use in the modulator!

Page 29: DSNG Mobile Presentation

Confidential | www.tandbergtv.com

DVB-S2 The easy way to save 35% bandwidth

• Only E5714IF and E5745 models cannot support DVB-S2

• All other products built in 2006 have the new DVB-S2 hardware as standard.

• If a customer needs to use DVB-S2 then follow this checklist;

– Has the customer got a new DSNG with the new modulator card?

– Is the customer running software version 3.10.1 or later?

– Has the customer got licence keys to activate the required DVB-S2 features?

Page 30: DSNG Mobile Presentation

Confidential | www.tandbergtv.com

Identifying the DVB-S2 Modulator

• DVB-S2 capable modulator is easily identifiable

• Look for 3 BNC connectors. If the card has 3 BNC’s (2 X ASI input plus 1 X BNC marked “TEST” then it’s DVB-S2 capable

• Same for both the IF and L-band versions.

• Remember it is provided as standard on most Voyagers built after 01.01.2006!

Page 31: DSNG Mobile Presentation

Confidential | www.tandbergtv.com

What can I use the modulator external inputs for?

• Most popular use is adding IP data!• Just add the TANDBERG TT6120 with IPED datacaster card at each end.• This unit has an RJ45 connector for IP connection to a hub• It has a “LOCAL” ASI input to which the IP data is encapsulated (at layer 2) and

added. The ASI Output contains the original transport stream with the IP data added to it. This is presented to the modulator via the external input.

• It has a “REMOTE” ASI input for inbound IP data extraction (if present) to provide a bi-directional link

Questions you will be asked:DVB-S2.

• Can I upgrade my Voyager to DVB-S2?

• Can I upgrade older non E57xx equipment to DVB-S2?

• As long as it’s an E57 or EN59 series product, the answer is almost always “Yes”. First, check to see if the modulator is DVB-S2 capable. If not, it will need replacing at our factory. With the correct hardware, a software upgrade to 3.10 or later will be required to make it work. This is free of charge if the customer performs the software upgrade themselves. Then, the customer must buy the licence.

• The customer must have a DVB-S2 compatible receiver. Note that our TT1260 / 1280 does not support 16APSK! However, this will not be used for mobile applications.

• Older than E57xx is not possible and the older equipment must be traded in.
